      There is more to life than GDP and shit like that. There are still loads of people in poverty and people are more divided now than they were then. Life was much simpler and less stressful then. It wasn't perfect, but people still ate with their families at night, had Sundays off to rest and be thankful for what they had and knew that the biggest blessings were the people in our lives and good health. Money sustained us, but it didn't control us as much as it does now. Society is screwed up because our priorities are all out of whack. I don't know how old you are, but the 70's were the last of our great society. The 80's were the beginning of the end.

    • @4021971
      @4021971 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am in the US. At one time nothing was open on Sunday and families got together and spent the day together. That doesn't happen in the US anymore. Everything is open and most families barely see each other. People in the US work two and sometimes three jobs just to make ends meet. You don't live in the US so you really can't comment. I live here now and lived here back in 1979. We are a terribly divided country filled with angry, bitter people and it is unbelievably sad. The stress level on people is high here and most people are on some kind of prescription drugs to help them deal with life. People shooting each other, violence in schools, murder and mayhem everywhere. It is really getting bad here and it is only going to get worse. Trump has only made things worse here and has created lots of hate between people. If Germany is better, then count your lucky stars.

    • @4021971
      @4021971 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Again, you don't live here. Sure I mentioned the world, but my world is here in the US, so I guess I can't comment on life in other places as you can't comment on life here. I think that things really changed after 9/11, but the change in society here started with President Kennedy's assassination(wasn't born yet) and really started to ramp up in the 80's. Anyhow, I don't know why my feelings are so important to you and why you feel the need to tell me that I am wrong in my perceptions of my world.

      Hasn't happened in 10,000 years or so. That's more than 10,000 total solar eclipses that have futilely tried to remind us of the darkness or war. Will it be more or less than 10,000 years before we can say 'Yes, it does!'

      I remember seeing the 1984 eclipse sitting on the hood of my car in the school parking lot (I was a junior then) and the 1994 one, at work, we all took our lunch hours to watch it. I also remember tuning in distant AM stations when the eclipse happened since it blocked the sun and creating night time conditions, Being a ham radio operator, it is interesting studying how it affects radio waves. I plan on driving south to at least the 95% line.

However, the interesting thing is that the broadcaster announced the next visible eclipse would be on the 21st of August of this year, (8:10) but he mentions it as being so many years away, like: "I might be dead by then."

    I lived in Seattle, was 15 and took the day off from school. I was extremely lucky and got transported over to Ellensburg-Yakima by the great dad of Pulshiz, in the awesome Cinema associates van. We ate thick steaks and then noticed everyone had mylar on their equipment. So we walked around asking, "Is this your lar or my lar"?
    Then we saw baileys beads and totality. It totally ruled!
    I became an eclipse chaser and saw the great July 11 1991 from Mazatlan and the May 10 1994 from El Paso. I can't wait to see the upcoming Aug 21 2017 one now, because I have been waiting since Feb 26th 1979 :)

    I was a freshman in high school when this happened. I was in a science class and our teacher showed us how to make a hole in the side of a cardboard box so the eclipse could be seen inside the box. It wasn't a total eclipse in SLC - it was about 90%, but it was awesome to see.
    Fast forward 38 years to today I was watching the eclipse with the high school kids that are in my science class. We didn't do the cardboard box with a hole trick, but we did watch it happen with the special eclipse glasses that the school purchased for all of the students and faculty. Again, it wasn't a total eclipse here in SLC, but it was at about 90%, just like the last time I saw it.

    Looking at this today on August 19, 2017. So weird to hear Frank Reynolds say back then on February 26, 1979 that there will not be another total solar eclipse visible here in the United States again until August 21, 2017. We're now two days away from The Great American Solar Eclipse.

    I'm pretty sure this was the earliest use of the horn version of the theme song as the synthesizer version was still primarily used as their theme song. This was aired February 26, 1979.

    IT’S AUGUST 21ST, 2017 RIGHT NOW! (At least on the East Coast) Just rewatched the video and got chills. Feels weird in a good way that this date must’ve seemed so far for them is TODAY. I first watched this video a couple of years ago and that’s how I first learned about and got interested in the solar eclipse. Thanks so much for recording and uploading this historical footage!🌑☀️

    My wife and I took the day off work; drove frantically away from our home in east Portland where cloud cover was thick, as the ABC News shows here. Thousands of motorists raced like mad out the Columbia Gorge I-84 East Highway. We got to Hood River, near Goldendale WA, but on our Oregon side of the Columbia River. Hundreds if not a few thousand photographers like myself had cameras on tripods set up in a large restaurant parking lot, with shutters clicking and zipping thousands of photographs. Here are the later results, as I recently reprocessed the old Kodachrome transparencies with Adobe Creative Cloud 2014 Photoshop. >
