- Hello and welcome to Basic Fishing from New Zealand. In this video, I talk about what I consider to be the top 5 baits for surfcasting and talk about why these baits are great to use and the species of fish you'll land and talk about some pros and cons on the baits. I get asked a lot on what bait I use and also I had used many different baits over the years but these 5 proved to be in the top list for me so I hope people will find some inspiration in this video and also help them to land a few fish as well

Very valuable infos on bait here. Love how you present your tutorials. They are always super helpful, easy to follow and have a very good pace. Also the matching footage is spot on. Well done!
thank you Mark!
Hi Peter, great video and some varied baits.
Down here in the 'Naki' Octopus is my choice for Snapper, works well and the Sharks aren't that keen on it.
Pilchards, squid, kahawai, prawns, mussels and crayfish are also favourites.
Cheers Kevin
cheers for watching. i heard the occy is popular down there especially in the rocky beaches. never tried using occy b4
In my experience the best bait for me are, Pilchard, Chicken Heart ( Very Cheap ) on supermarkets, squids and kahawai
tried most of those apart from chicken heart. kinda wanna try the chicken liver too
@@BasicFishingNZ snappers get mad with chicken heart but I use them from the boat
Awesome haha couldn't wait for one of this awesome work
thank you man
Excellent video....thank you!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for your video tutorial on baits.
Glad you like them!
Nice video 👍🏻
Thank you so much!
Great list mate crayfish has to be my favorite pulled in some great fish on it.
Also a good bait when targeting blue moki.
thank you. i would like to land a blue moki one day
Bullet tuna and bonito is my favorite bait to use whilst surfcasting. Never had a bad day with either
awesome appreciate your help always bro, ive been going to whatipu lately can u catch snapper off the beach or only kahawai?
nice man its mostly kahawai although snappers r mostly off the rocks at least from wat ive heard
@@BasicFishingNZ snapper off the lighthouse rocks or u mean rocks in general
yea the lighthouse
Great video!!!! Have you ever caught blue cod?
not yet still in my target list
🥳🥳👌🤙🤙👍😃Nice 😊
Thanks ✌️
How do you use your sabiki from the beach? (great video btw)
I generally bait up the sabiki and berley around the beach to get the baitfish's attention although the crabs also get curious lol
@@BasicFishingNZ lol where I fish the starfish always get to it 😅. But thanks for the tip!
Nice, have you been to new Mangere Bridge?
not yet not sure wen i'll go there again tbh
Hey dude i cant get any fish on west coast karioitahi n hamiltons gap. Do you think it might be because i cant cast further than 15 meters?
a good cast definitely helps but also look for clear patches that indicates deeper water
What do you think is better squid or pillchards?
that depends where you fish. pilchard in rough areas and squid in calm quiet areas where the pickers r more abundant
Ok thx
You should use koi carp it’s great bait it stays on the hook good to
yea i heard about that a lot
@@BasicFishingNZ yeah our bait freezer is almost full of koi carp 😂
Can u show what rig did you use?
I've got this video where I showcased my surf fishing rigs: th-cam.com/video/VN_f83J-X-Y/w-d-xo.html
You need to try octopus for bait I landed a 7.1kg sanpper on octopus bait 🙂 surf casting
I heard high phrases about the occy really do want to try it at some point if i get a chance
wow i wasnt excpeting the tua tua and the cray fish
haha lol well these work great in certain places but obviously in other zones it would b different
i also caught a big kahawai too.
nice
@@BasicFishingNZ you took a while to respond :(
i was always for 3 days
@@BasicFishingNZthat sounds fun
best bait almost always is fresh bait caught on the day end of story and it's free. You call yourself basic fishing yet most of your videos are about buying stuff you don't actually need.
Yeah but how are you gonna catch fish to use as bait without buying bait first? Noob
