      I like reviews with spoilers, I know the story after all lm here to see what you think about it, not to get a recommendation.
      But you can give a recommendation in the beginning for those who are new to it (few words, about a minute maximum) and then jump straight to the spoilers.

    Two things about Luffy vs Zoro.... #1 he might've been drunk.... #2 there's a possibility that Oda was kinda strongarmed into adding this by the magazine because they wanted to show this fight between the top 2 strongest crew members. This is literally the only time in the entire story that any of the crew betrays their own character.

    Pay more attention to usopp's dynamics with luffy and zoro, then put it together with his backstory of someone who wishes he was a pirate warrior but is too much of a coward to be one and is now thrown into a ship full of monster grade fighters that he can't compare to, unlike his father who's in one of the most famous crews with shanks because he deserves it. usopp's the real human in the fantasy world. and you'll like him a lot more a few arcs from now

The government ranking system in this series is one of the coolest aspects imo and the fact that some nobody pirate like Luffy took down such a high ranking “government” official has so many implications in terms of where the story’s headed and the consequences to come. Definitely my favorite thing about this arc.

      @Triattt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@cyryl3827 I understand not liking him and his gimmick, but this is One Piece where comedy gimmicks actually make important plot points and it would be really unfair to say it holds his crew back. Out of the top of my head, SPOILERS: he was the only one capable of facing Perona. We only see her as a minor nuissance and comedy relief because he was the one taking care of her. Anyone else would've been screwed in a haki-less period of the story. He was absolutely essential in three specific moments of Dressrosa of which two were because of his gimmicks. Like I said, I get it, it can get annoying sometimes, but he's not holding the crew back.

      It's around the Fishman saga that I felt his existence began to hold the crew back.

      I agree that Zoro/Luffy fight's reasoning is kinda sloppy, and then again it isn't. In Japanese culture, people generally are thankful to the ones providing them with food and thank their provider before a meal (i.e I watched a lot of anime). Luffy being a foodie, after hearing that his crewmate is going around beating people who fed him, decided to fight Zoro cause in his mind, he had commited an atrocious crime. Now, I am done, making excuses. Peace!

    • @sleepysera
      @sleepysera 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It honestly never bothered me as much as it seems to bother people now. Maybe because back then I only watched it as an anime and hadn't read the manga so idk how serious the portrayal of the scene is in the original, but in the anime, it always just felt like a silly side bit where it's like...yea we KNOW Luffy is the worst food addict in the world (with maybe one exception, lol) and takes food VERY seriously. We see him fight over food in background panels all the time. So of course it's a grave offense in his eyes when he wakes up and sees Zoro beat up the people who just fed him. Of course he'd be enraged.
      I think people give Luffy too much credit when they say "Why didn't he question Zoro calmly instead of starting a fight?"
      Luffy can be VERY one-track-minded and is especially always ready to brawl when it comes to food.
      Saying Luffy is loyal to his friends and would do everything for them as a counter argument for why he wouldn't have a silly scuffle over something dumb is like saying Zoro is loyal to and protective of the crew so he can't fight Sanji. Yet he does all the time, but when shit actually goes down, of course he's loyal and protective even towards Sanji.
      So yea. To me, that scene was always more of a...sibiling fight amongst two people who generally do very much care for each other, and never an actual "I legit want to kill you" kind of scenario.

Pretty sure people just like to blame the editor for any scene they don't like (even though we know from SBS and editor interviews that Oda, even as a total newbie, never actually just listened to his editors) so they can hold up Oda as this perfect being who never writes anything bad ever.

      Luffy is an impulsive idiot. He does what he emotionally feels like doing and it turns out okay for the most part because he has high EQ, but that's not always the case.
      The whole thing was as simple as him waking up, seeing his hosts beaten up by Zoro and then feeling like needing answers as to why it happened (in this case by beating him up and asking questions later).
      You rarely see Luffy actually ask questions, people either tell him what's up or he beats it out of them. Him asking questions from Zoro there would be what's out of character for him, not the other way around.
      I'm even going to go on a leg here and say he assumed Zoro's the violent drunk type of guy who beats up people when he's drunk, which some Pirates are. To Luffy, him attacking Zoro doesn't mean their friendship would end, he just emotionally felt compelled to do it, therefore he did.

    Man all this Usopp slander is painful to hear. He's the most courageous of anyone on the ship.
    Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji are fearless badasses. Courage is meaningless if there's no fear to overcome. Usopp has negative self image and is terrified of everything, but in spite of that he shows up to fight for his friends. He has to overcome more internally to get to the same place. Who's truly courageous here? Also Usopp's fight with Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas where he was hit with baseball bombs and takes a bat to the face, and yet STILL says "Don't you dare laugh at my friend's dream. Luffy is the man who will become the Pirate King!"
    Also Usopp invented a weather based weapon for Nami.
    He did ALL of that this arc.
    There's this thing about fiction where as readers we vicariously insert ourselves into the world and want to relate to the strong and powerful characters.
    Usopp, on the other hand, functions as a mirror held up to the audience. We may not like what we see.
    But then almost in response to that he shows courage, cleverness, inventiveness, and determination, and people seem to completely miss that because he's not a fearless badass like the monster trio.

    • @Grimexx955
      @Grimexx955 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thank you. Even at first he’s my favorite character because there’s a lot more of an internal battle with his struggles that I think a lot of stories miss when making MCs. Like he genuinely has to overcome his fears and lack of self worth, which were the reasons he was such a liar in the first place. It’s so full circle and just is super 3 dimensional I love it.

He's full of rather despicable character traits (the constant lying, boasting and self-centered attitude) but unlike the other characters, he didn't have anything positive to offset that negative side like all the other characters did, and for quite a long time at that.
      The issue I had with him was never that he's weak and afraid like a normal person would be amongst all those monsters, it's his unpleasant character.
      Nami is pretty much just as weak and afraid as he is most of the time, and would serve as an audience proxy in the same way, but she isn't disliked as he is for the first third of One Piece, because she isn't a despicable human all the time.
      Usopp grew on most people only once we saw SOME positive traits that could counterbalance the abundance of negative ones. If you liked him right away, that's great, but not exactly common :)

    A lot of people don’t like the Luffy/Zoro fight (including me), because, as you said, it’s inconsistent with Luffy’s character. I’ve heard that Oda was pushed by his editor(s) to include this, but that’s probably just a rumor.

      @@WordoftheElderGods Hard to tell, probably half and half. Editors do have a long history of demanding changes and story arcs, theres the story of a lot of late dragon ball almost being entirely dictated by editorial. This was also before One piece was One Piece, so its easier to believe. I personally think it's unlikely because it kinda becomes a recurring theme of Luffy mistakenly getting mad at people for seeming to be mean to regular people.

    6:53 One piece most definitely has layers to it's narrative with a lot of themes and philosophy for people to ponder over. Could definitely be taught in an english class given the level of detail the manga has. I'd go so far to say it's a modern day epic. If anything the tragedies in one piece definitely rivals that of a shakespearean tragedy haha Heck, there are whole youtube channels dedicated to analysing the story of one piece, which I highly recommend you check out. Once you're all caught up of course haha you might change your mind on whether it could be considered as one of the great pieces of literature.

    • @perrolokoz
      @perrolokoz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a lot of people don't realize just how important One Piece truly is. As you pointed out it has a lot of themes, perhaps not really shown that much in the first arcs, but once it gets to Enies Lobby the story really gets deeper with themes such as freedom, distopia, dreams, etc. And yeah, I agree it's a modern day epic that one day may be taught in english class. (IIRC there are already courses in Universities in Japan teaching it, and even has kabuki plays in Japan, so at least there it is in that level).
      I also consider One Piece one of the greatest pieces of literature ever created, just because old stuff was created 400 or so years ago doesn't mean stuff like One Piece which (IMO) is indefinetly better and can make you feel a wide range of emotions. In fact that's one of the main topics in One Piece, that the new can generation eventually surpasses the old.
