I lived in an apartment with 2 other guys as a teen/20-something for over 10 years. We were all drinkers, smokers, and stoners. Our apartment was a party house. and never looked that bad. The closest thing would have been our fridge, but even that was never as bad as what I have seen in these professional kitchens.
Realistically if these places were that bad for that long it wouldn't suddenly be of utmost urgency to shut the place down before someone got sick, people would've been getting sick for a really long time. How could the place be serving rotten food for that long and still have customers?
Often when it comes to restaurants, without a good leader, manager sadly that's the results. Staff often won't care without someone who will be there to lead by an example and hold it together, and without any aspiration, acknowledgement, appreciation and even better - pay rise, why would they? Job then for them becomes clock in/clock out and blind leadership by the owners/management therefore leads to dark times. That filth, mess and lack of clients comes from nothing more than the owners who manage the place and allow it by being a part of it.
@bink You don't think this is real? How would they know someone had gotten sick unless they reported it? I worked in a restaurant that was almost as nasty as this for 2 weeks, then I quit because out was so disgusting. Their sanitation grade was 85% and lots of people ate there. I promise, there are kitchens this disgusting, and they get that way over time because no one cleans them.
@bink oh you'd be surprised how lazy people are about cleaning and rotating product they just pile new on top on new and never notice the rot in the back

In all fairness, it has happened that Gordon has visited a place where the food was actually good. The very first episode of Kitchen Nightmares (the original UK version), Gordon cleaned his plates, and ate everything he was served. So if you haven't seen it, I can only recommend doing so.
Just about everything that could be wrong with a restaurant was wrong with this restaurant. Filthy dirty, health hazard, menu too big, decor terrible, place falling apart, food of a starting amateur home cooking level, stale food, frozen ingredients.clueless owners, almost no customers. And $65k on kitchen equipment was a waste of money. That restaurant was beyond redemption as the owners lacked professionalism.

You never know what that kitchen looks like or if the employee that played with your food is hygienic. Just think about that before going to any restaurant. 😆
The part where the shoes are blows my mind. How? Why? I think either some of this is TV set up OR a disgruntled employee or customer who knows Gordan is there. I mean the odds of pulling up a booth in an active restaurant and then to find SHOES of all things kind of blows my mind.

For those curious about how the Old Neighborhood Restaraunt did after the episode well... It closed down about 3ish years after this episode aired. Longer than a lot of failed places on the show, but they still failed. It looked like reviews were good after Gordon's changes, but still not perfect. Business couldn't bounce back for the long term.
Tx for update. I've always wanted to know if a KN restaurant closes can the makeover of a brand new kitchen valued at 65k & interior items seating, dinnerware etc can be recouped by the show?
