The people who say you should skip act 1 are horribly mistaken, if skipped you will miss many of the details like how the game actually works. If one is intelligent enough you can decipher there is a story. Also do NOT skip to act five, it's like skipping ahead in book just because you don't want to, let's say read about Bilbo Baggins having dinner and want to skip to where the action is. That my friends is a sin and you skip all the character development entirely.
I don't know, i think act 4 is where shit hits the fan, i readed the entire thing and i still don't understand who are the alpha kids parents and how does the paradox clones actually work. Have the kids never existed? The game created the kids? Did the trolls create the kids so the kids would create themselves in order to win the game? I mean, i get it, paradox and time shenanigans, but that's poorly written, that's like saying, "no, paradox space needs them to exist because shut up". Can someone explain that to me? I am seriously puzzled. Also, one other thing, how the fuck did John not get prototyped with the sprite? It highfived the damn thing.
well to answer the first question the alpha kids were cloned from themselves and are the genetic parents of the betas. a paradox isn't supposed to make sense that's why its a paradox in the first place. they can't exist but can at the same time. its not bad writing its just a hard topic to grasp and i don't blame you for not getting it. Second for the sprite contact? the rules are kinda vague on the sprites but i'm guessing quick contact doesn't count.

i've always liked homestuck dialog boxes. It makes me feel like I get to the know the characters more personally than the average comic because they can talk for extended periods of time. and aren't restricted to bubbles.
Yeah, that moment when you realize that you have "had" more dialogue with the four main characters of homestuck than close family members... It has it's impact.
“At least it's in a different color for the characters talking.” Yes, that is a true fact, and will undoubtedly remain true throughout the rest of the comic, with no exceptions.

It's a little weird having troll silhouettes in the thumbnail when this is four fuckin acts before they're introduced, but I guess they're the most recognizable aspect of the comic for anyone outside. Though anyone who DOESN'T know about the trolls is probably going to be confused why those weird orange-horned things were in the thumbnail but nowhere in the review.

We need a webcomic reviewer. I have occasionally been tempted to do it myself but then I remember I am insanely lazy. I want to see someone giving great but crazy stuff like Dr McNinja a gleeful riffing, and watch their ASBAR-level breakdown as they try to read trainwrecks like Dominic Deegan or Jack. Or the pits of despair that is something like Sonichu.
Diana Saucedo I would expect that much from someone whose profile picture is of Homestuck. Face it, you didn't give two shits about it before Undertale was popular.
A harlequin doll... A harlequin doll... I'm sixteen years old and I just now figured out that Harley Quinn's name comes from a harlequin doll. I truly am an idiot, I never fit the pieces together nor did I ever question where the name came from.
Honestly, if you think the first act of Homestuck was pretty engaging and fast-paced, I really encourage you to read the rest of it. I loved the first few acts, they're really funny and there actually... is.... necessary plot in them, despite how little it makes sense when you first read it. Things pick up in act 4 and then the plot gets really intricate and wonderful in act 5, which is where I guess people were telling you to start? As a fair warning though, the plot is kind of over-complicated.There's a total of like, 40 completely separate characters? Obviously they aren't all major, but, that also isn't counting the different versions of characters from different timelines that are basically different people. Speaking of which, there's so many time shenanigans. Multiple timelines everywhere. It is mostly coherent and everything mostly gets resolved (and actually ties into each other beautifully at points), but it's still a hell of a lot to take in. Hussie does a great job with preparing the reader for it, though, by spending the first 4 acts mostly on character development for the 4 main kids, so when all hell breaks loose, you have characters you care about that you can focus on. The other major thing is Homestuck is LONG. I'm sure everyone has warned you about this already, but, just so you really grasp it, the word count is 817,612 and there's about 4 hours of animation/sound clips. Act 5 is as long as acts 1-4 combined, and act 6 is twice as long as that. It's not something you're gonna finish anytime soon, even if you devote all your free time to it. All that being said, I really hope you still make the effort to read it. I fucking love Homestuck. It's not for everyone (it's a really hit or miss comic, tbh). It's this weird, satirical, wacky thing with an amazingly intricate hot mess of a plot. The best thing to me, however, is the characters. Despite there being a billion of them, they really are the heart and soul of the comic. There's some fucking amazing character development with a few of them. I've cried over these characters countless times. I'm sure you've stopped reading this by now, but I really encourage you to give the rest of Homestuck a shot, if just for the characters.
Karkat Vantas Not unless you pay him. Also, it's sad seeing how the only people who want him to continue are deranged fans with Homestuck profile pictures.
He just asked if he would consider to review the rest of it, I hardly think this count as deranged ^^" And yes, I know you were speaking in a more general manner, but it still not the nicest thing you could've said.
Please do read homestuck. Once you meet all four main characters, the story, music, and artwork double in quality. Everything past there goes up exponentially. And count yourself lucky that it's all out now. Waiting made it's fluthulian tentacles compress ever harder around our souls.
I'm extremely satisfied with this review of Homestuck Act 1, a comic near and dear to my heart. I would love to see Linkara review the rest of it and watch the convoluted web that gets woven in an insane yet endearingly lovely web of silliness, humanity, love, growth, and acceptance while creating a new universe.
Oh God, the way you said - and gesticulated - the "therefore I win" made me break down laughing out loud. Great review, especially since the comic itself looks pretty bizarre.
homestuck is more of a novel, video game, comic, and cartoon than a normal comic it can be a long read but a fun one its designed to start small and grow larger that's why the first act is....eh it starts getting good around act 3 or so and its really a combination of silly antics and great sci fi and fantasy i recomend delving further into it
That's arguable. If you like Act 1 at all, there's a good chance you'll find it improves tremendously up until the end of Act 5. After that opinions get way more divided and the ending is the epitome of what TVTropes calls a Base Breaker. I think it's shit, for the record. But for how much the rest of the comic blew my mind, it was probably worth it.
if you don't like reading you could go to a youtube channel named CoLabHQ they have a homestuck series act 1-3 are pretty boring but try and bear with it. its so worth it in the end
I love Act 1, it just keeps getting better the more you know about the comic. After seeing the final page, going back to the beginning in like watching videos of your baby long after they've grown up.
Do you know any places where i can bitch about the ending? I went to the reddit, but I got overwhelmed by the amount of topics. But, maybe I should give it another look.
Posting this before I actually watch the video. HO BOY. I'm actually really excited to see Linkara review Homestuck. It's super weird to hear most of these titles said aloud, since almost all of the friends of mine that share an interest in Homestuck are online, so I never... really hear anyone say the phrases aloud. Anyway. I'm excited.
Yo, only reading Act One is like spitting in the face of Homestuck. The VAST MAJORITY of Act One pays off and pays off BIG in the last couple Acts. In order to review Homestuck in ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, you need to read the ENTIRE THING. Or at least until the end of Act 5 (specifically, the page titled "[S] Cascade"). Trust me, it is so worth reading Homestuck from Act One to Act Seven.
I recommend that you keep going. The plot gets A LOT more intense. When you get to the End Of Act 4 (I believe that's it I'm not 100% sure) that's when the story starts to pick up. Act 5 (both parts) is where you meet a crap ton of characters that become very important. This webcomic makes you have to pay attention and remember.
seriously though. I tried getting into Homestuck but the first act really confused me and put me off a little bit. I like characters the most and for the beginning of it, it didn't seem like it has engaging characters :) Can any fans tell me how long before things get more plot-driven? Also YAY! Summerween!!! 8'D
Liezl Bohnen also you could cut Homestuck in 3 "parts" by size : Part 1= act 1-4 Part 2 = act 5 Part 3 = act 6 So you can have a perspective how big the last two are
15:43 I agree, the early acts, while slow, have so many crucial points that only show themselves as important later on in the story. If you skip it, you do the story a huge disservice. Also, I think most of people's hatred for Homestuck comes from the fandom members, they get... kind of passionate to say the least.
I feel like Marville never SHOULD live down that 3rd issue. I actually came out of the reviews of the 3rd and 4th issues with honest to god stupidity-induced headaches. I live in the Bible Belt region of the US, so I've heard some pretty off-the-wall stuff regarding science and evolution, and I'd STILL never heard anything as utterly "What the hell?!" as what Marville put out.
If you're interested in Homestuck, perhaps you'd like to read Moonstuck as well. It's an MLP Paint comic that was probably supposed to be an homage to Homestuck, but is actually its own hilarious story. A big part of Moonstuck's identity and humor is that there's more reader interaction, and a lot of the jokes are based off suggested actions.
Suddenly, I realize why the type of people I run into that were obsessed with Homestuck were obsessed. Then again I was surrounded by BostonStucks soooooo...
Another thing: everything that happens in the first act, while at first glance might be slow, plodding, and pointless, is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO THE REST OF THE COMIC. EVERY LITTLE DETAIL.
I really enjoyed the first few acts of Homestuck, always have. As a characters-and-dialogue man, I love seeing all the fun, but meaningless interactions and learning all the rules. It's so causal and infectious.
I agree, I hear a lot of people say the first act is boring as all hell, but for some reason I really enjoyed it. I could say it's nostalgia, but I've only read it a couple days after it ended, so not much to gaze upon in terms of remembrance. I guess it's refreshing to see after you're so used to seeing all hell break loose in the later acts, that Act 1 is really pleasant.
The whole "story is too slow" thing is probably just compared to the newer standards. Like how some people hate Bram Stoker's Dracula (the book, not the movie) because it's not fast paced or romantic enough, but I really like the slower pacing because it allows for more suspense.
Linkara, if you enjoyed comic I'd recommend having a listen of some of the tracks on Homestuck's official bandcamp, its got some pretty cool tracks (Toby Fox even did some of them).
We don't acknowledge problem sleuth enough. *if you wanna get a good jump on the story (Homestuck), please watch the voxus dub. Lot of acts covered in it.*
Sorry to hear about the numbers on the summer lbotd I love the twilight zone ones so far, being a fan of sci-fi anthologies especially The Outer Limits. Mostly because they also con people into learning social issues in a way that gets under the censors. I would say homestuck would be something hard for you to Review just from sheer volume and....Hussie's method of storytelling. It makes sense in the end but it's very confusing in the meantime
You say your have a ball room. Knowing your character, I find it equally plausible that this could be a room for dancing or a room to play in a ball pit.
The comic kinda sinned itself about the mail thing early in act 6 when Roxy tells Jane there's a possibility her mailman is a dumbass because usually the flag is up when you need the mailman to take something out.
The first two acts are actually pretty good. It gives a lot of back story and foreshadowing to the rest of the series. I would definitely recommend the comic, as it is very deep and complex, giving you a lot to think about
I like Act 1, it's not as easy to get through as other acts but it sets a tone. It spends a lot of time taking things apart, first the formula from prior MSPA comics, then normality. It's not perfect but taking it's time isn't the worst thing it could have done.
Homestuck is a long, drawn out comic where if you don't start at the beginning and skip to act 4 you will be confused as hell. the art style and animations do get better as the comic goes on, and there's even a "minigame-esque" section at one point. (I think in act two, but I'm not sure.) I actually liked this review because he voiced all the thoughts I had when reading Act one for the first time. the acts get ridiculous by A6. there are acts within acts within intermissions, but Hussie is very articulate about this comic. you have to read the whole thing to actually understand everything(almost) that's going on.
I think you should check out Whistles. A more traditional comic series. Its a bit expensive as a physical copy but you should be able to find a digital version for free. Telling by the jokes you make you clearly don't understand the jokes humour or universe so you should probably check Whistles out. A word of warning though. It was intended to be a 6 part series but only 4 were made, one of which is digital only and unshaded.
Defending John's Father. (Spoilers btw) Later in the story we find out that one of the villains, Jack Noir had a part in the Harlequin doll for his birthday as John when he was younger he had a dream cause by Jack Noir with a harlequin in the dream. John scribbled clowns and stuff like that on his walls, and John's Father trying to connect with his son thought John like that kind of stuff, but John does in fact not.
Homestuck is confusing enough as it is, skipping Act 1 (and thus the introduction to the weird way its world functions) would be the icing on a very confusing cake. Also, when a dead alien heiress promotes a brown-blooded ghost to Pooplord after his victory dance, it wouldn't make any sense at ALL.
I was honestly terrified to open up this video. I thought you where gonna bash homestuck. not that criticism is bad. I feel like it's just one of those hit or miss comics. though the fandom can be kinda terrifying.......
Imagine per-prototyping your dead relative by accident. When you enter the game, all the Imps would look like your dead dad, or something. You'd have to fight him.
here's the thing about homestuck. you don't question it. you just go along with it, it mostly makes sense later. Trust me. If you keep reading, which I suggest you do because it gets really good, you can't question anything. seriously.
Act1: A young boy stands in his bedroom
Act 6: A weeb lord hijacks the comic and later becomes what is basically the devil.
The epilogue: Another weeb lord hilacks the comic yet again, basically taking over the author to get the comic to continue.
It's an MLP Paint comic that was probably supposed to be an homage to Homestuck, but is actually its own hilarious story. A big part of Moonstuck's identity and humor is that there's more reader interaction, and a lot of the jokes are based off suggested actions.
Omg I'd forgotten about moonstuck! It was so adorable.
Ah, but Moonstruck is actually GOOD
Tareltonlives
And Homestuck isn't? That said, this video is my first exposure to Homestuck. Moonstuck's too different to count.
Suddenly, I realize why the type of people I run into that were obsessed with Homestuck were obsessed. Then again I was surrounded by BostonStucks soooooo...
The bit where you choose a name and it just goes wrong your name is John Egbert reminds me of Deus Ex.
I only searched the TH-cam comments but did you misspell Brad Jones's name in the thanks section as Brod?
Another thing: everything that happens in the first act, while at first glance might be slow, plodding, and pointless, is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO THE REST OF THE COMIC. EVERY LITTLE DETAIL.
15:10 homestuck has a physical copy, it got a comic book for act 1-3
I really enjoyed the first few acts of Homestuck, always have. As a characters-and-dialogue man, I love seeing all the fun, but meaningless interactions and learning all the rules. It's so causal and infectious.
Can someone send me the link to this comic plz
www.mspaintadventures.com
also, good luck!!
Snob's right. Code Red is the best Mountain Dew.
If you have the time, DO binge listen to the soundtrack. Because it's surprisingly amazing.
I love all the acts. And hope you will continue the story even if you don't decide to continue reviewing. :D
It's nice that you read from the beginning because it gets incredibly confusing if your start at act 5
Where the fuck was Vriska in the thumbnail
Albert she's there her eye is glowing
The whole "story is too slow" thing is probably just compared to the newer standards. Like how some people hate Bram Stoker's Dracula (the book, not the movie) because it's not fast paced or romantic enough, but I really like the slower pacing because it allows for more suspense.
So, if someone wanted you to review a webcomic, would that be off the table unless they had released their stuff into trades?
On another note what score would IGN give SBURB?
they would probably give it 10/10 without giving any evidence to back it.
Actually, I think the Rodent of unusual size appears at some point later...
Linkara, if you enjoyed comic I'd recommend having a listen of some of the tracks on Homestuck's official bandcamp, its got some pretty cool tracks (Toby Fox even did some of them).
Huh.. never thought I'd see Linkara review a webcomic, good video as always!
does he ever end up reading the rest?
half the web comic is act 6
I want an act two review
Once you discover the reason behind John's dad's obsession with clowns it actually becomes heartwarming
Anyways this story is rather amazing!!! Will you create another atop the 4th wall? like act 2 or sonething?
"Communicates with notes?" Sooo, he's one of my in-laws?
We don't acknowledge problem sleuth enough.
*if you wanna get a good jump on the story (Homestuck), please watch the voxus dub. Lot of acts covered in it.*
Are you making Act 2???
I'm glad to see Brad still doing his Bro OC and finding a replacement for "He who is dead to Brad."
Then again, considering the heavy involvement of time loops and stuff it makes sense why that'd happen.
lbotd?
Payton Holmes "LongBox Of The Damned"
14:20 It actually has an explanation in like 4000 pages.
You say your have a ball room. Knowing your character, I find it equally plausible that this could be a room for dancing or a room to play in a ball pit.
Was that Takahata101 at the end?
13:37 I only now got the reference.
In case you couldn't guess, this comic is supposed to be a comedy, despite the more dramatic moments that happen later.
The comic kinda sinned itself about the mail thing early in act 6 when Roxy tells Jane there's a possibility her mailman is a dumbass because usually the flag is up when you need the mailman to take something out.
I just wasted 20 seconds of my life writing that maybe more.
bruh it took me me 3 tries to get into homestuck, and when I did it was one of the funnest moments for me, too bad the fandom has changed
(but at the same time, thank god it did lol)
the fandoms pretty dead now kinda the best time to read it
Atomic powered robot sounds cool. He always gives his regards to everybody.
man, you missed such a good oportunitty to use Megalomania for the title card
I would've gone for the SBURB theme.
The first two acts are actually pretty good. It gives a lot of back story and foreshadowing to the rest of the series.
I would definitely recommend the comic, as it is very deep and complex, giving you a lot to think about
Man, a avgn linkara crossover is my dream
A great review. I know it's highly doubtful, but it would be cool to see you review the other parts. Just wishful thinking on my part.
I forgot one thing to add. This comic is a large hit or miss with people. You either like it or hate it.
now i shall wait for part two~ make a part two and i will 100% subscribe
ditto
I think you should check out Whistles. A more traditional comic series. Its a bit expensive as a physical copy but you should be able to find a digital version for free.
Telling by the jokes you make you clearly don't understand the jokes humour or universe so you should probably check Whistles out.
A word of warning though. It was intended to be a 6 part series but only 4 were made, one of which is digital only and unshaded.
I probably should've mentioned its by the same guy. but I cant edit comments. Oh well
Alternate titles:
Zoosmell and the Temple of Doom
Zoosmell The Conqueror
Zoosmell in New York
Zoosmell, She-Wolf of the U.S. Navy
I would love to see him do more, though reviewing all of it would take... a very very long time.
ALWAYS READ ACT 1 IT IS IMPORTANT AND BEAUTIFUL
Defending John's Father.
(Spoilers btw)
Later in the story we find out that one of the villains, Jack Noir had a part in the Harlequin doll for his birthday as John when he was younger he had a dream cause by Jack Noir with a harlequin in the dream. John scribbled clowns and stuff like that on his walls, and John's Father trying to connect with his son thought John like that kind of stuff, but John does in fact not.
Anyone who says you shouldn't start Homestuck from Act 1 was clearly not paying attention during the early acts.
Accidental Melody I wonder what people will see when they reflwct on Homestuck 10 years from now.
Speaking as a member active still yea I remember my more cringy moments earlier when I first started and holy fuck I regret that
I am kinda sad you didn't use any Homestuck music for the title card, but hey, there's always Volume 2.
Imagine per-prototyping your dead relative by accident. When you enter the game, all the Imps would look like your dead dad, or something. You'd have to fight him.
Builds character
here's the thing about homestuck. you don't question it. you just go along with it, it mostly makes sense later. Trust me. If you keep reading, which I suggest you do because it gets really good, you can't question anything. seriously.
"When does the grim reaper show up?"
Around act 4. And he never leaves.
