Another example of a comic with a "Soul": The Crow by O'Barr. That dude poured so much pain and anger and sorrow into some rough yet beautiful black and white pannels
O'Barr is a really sweet guy, too; I met him at the Lexington Comic convention. And a veteran. He acted like it was no big deal.

The amazing thing is that Alan Moore asked Len Wein for every change and Wein was completely ok with Moore's retcons. This is how you improve on an already great character, with respect for the source material.
All of Allen Moore’s Swamp Thing run is Amazing. The Love & Death story and American Gothic storyline revolutionized American Comics. Far from fluffy flowers, real American Horror.
I can’t stand buying issues. I only buy volumes or graphic novels. I like the whole book not just a chapter 🤷♂️
That's the downside with the whole decompressed storytelling Bendis made popular. Each issue no longer is a standalone story but part of a whole arc. It makes a lot of people unwilling to invest in individual issues and just wait for the graphic novel to come out months later.
Alan Moore was born to write comics.
I wish I was around in a time of good comics. It feels like we are standing in the crater where the good comics industry used to sit.
Interesting metaphor. I grew up in the '80s, worked in a comic shop during the Image boom, and the energy around indie comics for the last 1.5 years reminds me of that time. Good times are around the corner for those know where to find the party.
Reading older comics is a real wake up call. Sometimes we may start to believe that we're being overly harsh on modern writers. And then you read something by Frank Miller or Alan Moore, and it's a sharp reminder that, no.... it's not US it really is THEM!
Back in the day, I never read much Marvel, so I recently read The Elektra Saga. The themes in that are positively Shakespearean!
Moore's Swamp Thing run changed the game. The first of at least three times he did that. Classic.

The Gotham and Batman tie in was stupendous.
Alan Moore Swamp Thing is his best work by a country mile IMO.
This and born again sit right at the top of the table for me, never matched.
I made the same mistake as a young man, and went back and collected the entire Alan Moore run. this is one of the best ongoing stories ever told.
Moore's "Saga of The Swamp Thing" is timeless. The writing is sophisticated but it's not pompous or pedantic at all and then the art is just brain-meltingly awesome. The level of detail in the characters and their facial expressions, especially Swamp Thing himself with how you can see nuanced emotions in his face, I can't imagine that being easy for an artist to achieve considering the character's design; then there's the panel layouts that are so unique and the use of deep shadows in contrast with these bold colors, everything is just so eye-catching. It's just a true masterpiece, I'm glad you covered it.
I read this in 1988. Thank you for the flashback to fond memories--my friends and I still talk about that story.
Discovering this run by Alan Moore brought me back to comics as an adult in 2004 after leaving it in 1993 as a teenager.
My favorite Alan Moore comic, much more enjoyable than Watchmen, which felt like a chore at times.
Everyone always praises Moore more (get it?) but they don’t bring up Steve Bisette. His art is incredible. The faces of Swamp Thing are horrifying with the red eyes and the nose ridge. Great stuff

This is my favorite comic run of all time. WATCHMEN will go down as the best story Alan Moore ever wrote, but imo this is just as good. It had everything: spectacular writing; mesmerizing art; action packed when it needed to be; thoughtful yet not forced (it actually talks a bit about racism in a non-cringy manner); horror; a lone wolf who is initially a very reluctant hero; a freaking SPACE SCI-FI saga; an AMAZING female character (if only SJWs writers actually cared to write realistic, well-meaning characters like Abby Arcane); romance; and a freaking evil and unforgetable villain. It even had the balls to offer a freaking conclusive ending...and a very bizarre cameo from Batman. Please keep reviewing them!
I know you always read comments, Zack. Which makes it all the more worthwhile to spend some minutes typing them. Thank you for covering this. I doubt much of your audience doesn't know about Swamp Thing, but if you get at least 20 people to buy this and become Swampy fans, I'll be eternally grateful because this one was special for me. You truly, truly love comics. "THEY" know it, and that's why they hate you.

I knew about the 1982 movie, but I got into the Moore Swamp Thing by happenstance. I ordered something from one of those stores in the comic book ads, and one of the things was back ordered. They sent me a Swamp Thing as an apology and the rest was history. Mind blown as an 11 year old. LOL
I had come across this gem a year ago. Came to see Swampy and stayed for Johnny. Best decision ever.
Very excited to see this video today. One of my favorite comic book characters and one of my favorite comic book runs.
I am so thankful that the cover of the _Anatomy_ _Lesson_ issue (the 2nd issue of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run) caught my eye in that 7-Eleven way back when. I had never read anything like it, and I managed to get a hold of the previous issue, then held on for dear life over the next few years of awesomeness. Swamp Thing had science fiction, gothic horror, cosmic horror, religion, spirituality, love, hate, mystery, revelation, the occasional superhero guest appearance, and an almost overwhelming amount of creative passion. I'm a horror nerd, and some of the creepiest stuff I've *ever* read is in that run of Swamp Thing. I think it was the first comic from the Big Two to give the Comics Code Authority the finger as well, and once DC okay'd that Moore, Totleben, and Veitch ran wild.
Thanks for giving it a shot despite the pretty roses and the swamp finch, Zack!
Oh, just you wait till you get to American Gothic storyline. That one is for the ages.

Also: the brilliance of true artists is they KNOW MORE THAN JUST THEIR STUFF: that image on page 58 when running after Sunderland ? (where the top of panels is a black trellis) Straight out of Orson Welles' LADY FROM SHANGHAI . . .

People forget or don't even realise that now. Newsprint muted and blended the background colours (foliage etc) beautifully. When the comic went to "better" stock with no. 60 I remember being shocked at how garish everything looked.

That was the "spaceship" issue if I remember correctly - one of the most extraordinary piece of comic fiction I have ever, ever read.
I just compared my TPB with the newsprint issues (I collected them bit by bit over time) the TPB print is *missing* actual visual information put in by Woods; like tiny ventricules in plant cells and what it did to "Rites of Spring" is nearly unforgivable.
The cover for that issue 34 belongs in a museum of fine art. I'm dead serious about that.

Swamp thing is awesome, Alan Moore did great work. Rick Veitch’s run was good too.
The TV show is pulled straight out of these pages, with very little changes. It's highly recommended.

Just finished reading the Moore run a few days back. It's excellent all the way to the end. Probably in my top 3 runs of all time. SO GOOD.

The motion comic for watchmen is up on youtube and i've been binge watching that all week. It's a really bizzare way to experience a comic. Would reccomend

Ol Swamp Thing. My favorite comic books, next to 90s Batman comics. I love the 70s stuff more though. The writing is simpler, but the whole thing is elevated by Wrightson's art. BUT Moore's stuff is inspiring.

I'm from the UK and the thing that annoys us most (comics wise) is that early 2000AD doesn't get as much credit and appreciation as it probably should, yet.
Wait until you read the rest of the run, it's awesome. Comics at its best.
I purchased the Saga of the Swamp Thing collection. It doesnt contain the issues before "Anatomy Lesson". It collected chapters 1 thru 7 ending with Abby accepting a ride from her possessed (unknown to her) husband.
The swamp thing tv show was surprisingly really good and most of the material that it adapts comes from this run by Moore. I have no idea why it was cancelled.

In the UK, we got to read AM's work in Marvel UK and independent publications like Warrior. The first appearance of V for V and Marvel man. Not forgetting the great 2000ad. AM's Halo Jones, DR and Quinch. Thank you for standing up for sorry telling, not propoganda.
The next 5 volumes managed to sustain that level too, and some of the later storylines made Swamp Thing almost a plant-based prototype for Dr Manhattan. Rick Veitch taking over from Moore was nowhere near as good, but that passion you talked about was still there in abundance.
"Jolly olde Englande" stuff is so far off it just makes me smile. I remember hearing publisher Dez Skinn at a con a couple of years before his Warrior mag ran Moore's V For Vendetta and Marvelman, talking about meeting Stan Lee. For some unknown reason Lee kept bringing up the word "bumbershoot", because apparently, "That's what you British people call an umbrella, ain't it?" Skinn was as mystified in the retelling as everyone else in the room, since it's an American term and 100 years old at that...

Great issues. The promotional poster would have turned me off too back then, had I'd seen it.
At the time, I was blown away by Alan Moore's retconning of Swamp Thing into a plant elemental. But in retrospect, the success of this encouraged a lot of hack writers that followed to re-write characters' histories for their own selfish agendas.
It worked in this case because before Moore took over, Swampy was a relatively new character with low sales who readers didn't really feel passionately about.

Saga of the Swamp Thing is in my top 3 comic book runs of all time and Alan Moore's best work in my opinion. I hope you review Book Two also as that's my favorite one of the entire run. Issues 29-31 are all masterpieces.

What sticks in my memory is when he meets Arcane in Hell, and he asks Swamp Thing, "How many years have I been here?" and Swamp Thing replies, "Since yesterday." BOOM.

Does anybody remember when swamp thing took over Gotham because they arrested Abigail for having relations with a plant? Batman had no way to stop him.
You hit the nail on the head when you talked about how much comic writers like Moore and Frank Miller would invest themselves in their books, whereas current year "writers" like Mags Visaggio, Leah Williams, etc. couldn't care less about their characters or the books they're writing. Ironically, Swamp Thing -- plant life that thought it was a man -- has more humanity than the SJWs currently working in comics.
Love this run and also the Ostrander Spectre run. Picked up the new Hellblazer today and really missed Vertigo...Rip
I bought this comic literally a couple weeks ago. It was half off, too. Time and money well spent!
They did pretty much the same thing in the tv show with Swamp Thing being captured and taken apart, then finding out he is not Alex after. So looks like this is where they took lots of the ideas from. It looks like it is a different scientist at first, but he does become Floronic Man at the end.
The tv show is a good one and only has one guy show up a few times to help, the Blue Devil.
The main girl is an actor from Gotham. But sucks the show was DoA, even though it is good, there was an issue with the dc streaming service.
It looks like a great comic, both art and story.
I love jolly old England. The SJW's don't because they are not jolly and hate national identity.

Swamp Thing was a remarkably important body of literature. They tried to do the same sort of thing with Animal and the Red that Swamp Thing has with the Green and fighting the Grey. It's true mythology and what Joseph Campbell called the Hero's Journey.
Read Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels too.

Frankly the best graphc novel collection regarding supernatural superheroes was Gaiman's Book of Magc as he weaves every vital DC character (and later the Vertigo series characters expanded on them).
1) Was the Justice League guest starring to bring readers to Swamp Thing or was it that Swamp Thing was brushing off some of it's cache on the JLA? 2) I like that they had to remind readers that Len Wien & Bernie Wrightson created ST on the credits page. EVS has said that DC is very good to creators, I hope Mr Moore is getting some of the scratch Swamp Thing earns.

Neil Gaiman mined a lot of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing ideas for his Black Orchard story with Dave Mckean. Great mini series that was completely flubbed as an ongoing with another writer that didn't understand storytelling (Dick Foreman. . .which sounds like a pen name.) Gaiman also picks up Matthew and uses him all over his Sandman run.
