  • The infamous Devon Enthusiast 'Doctor Death' is seen standing infront of me, as most of the train bellows the obligatory mark at the good Doctor. This was the Paignton & Dartmouth steam railway's Rat running day featuring D7535 (25185) and it is seen here departing Goodrington sands on the 4/5/13.
    Enjoy!

August 2022 and 'Death' is still with us. Saw him at Newton Abbott, still with his coat and step ladder.

Lovely telephoto shot there Howard with the water park in the background. A pity the bellowers drowned out some of the noise from the 25. I remember hearing something about "Doctor Death", but the story has slipped my mind............

As a child at the tail end of steam, loco spotting was quite interesting. As well as the new fangled diesels, there were steam locomotives that were nearly new as well as some that were very old indeed. Trains were inter-regional, so unusual stuff often came through on the main lines.
Coal was still king for commercial and domestic power, and until 1962 British railways were a common carrier, leading all kinds of weird and wonderful stock and movements. Even in the era of this Class 25, train movements had a certain fascination and much of the infrastructure was Victorian. Now you'd have to be very keen indeed to track foreign built multiple units covered in advertising, or liveries made by the colour blind. However rail transport is much more popular than it was 40 years ago, which is the only thing that matters.

Collecting engine numbers is no more or less pointless than collecting anything else of little/no value.. what I loved about my early teenage years as a rail enthusiast was the adventure that I looked forward to every weekend - travelling all over the UK for next to nothing, seeing the country, meeting people & making new friends, learning to be independent and how to figure stuff out for myself.. every weekend was like a treasure hunt/detective game, using the BR computers to figure out how to intercept particular engines that were hauling passenger trains.. it was a blast and a f**k sight more enthralling than plenty of other pastimes that kids got involved in then and now.. I'm only the tiniest bit interested in it now but I look back on those days with great nostalgia..
