- Hello all you fine and wonderful people,
Firstly, thank you all. You're an amazing community. You came together to help save the Ruston 165 from being sent to scrap.
The big question is that, being sold with a gearbox fault, will it actually move, or is it just a paperweight?
If you want to support the Locomotives please have a look at the fundraiser. Every penny will be used to get them back into operational condition.

This man will own all the rustuns in the Uk 😂
and we, his community, will likely be the enablers who help him do it because we are as mad as he is
😂 😂 No, that's too many 😂
@@lmm shush you need more
@@WG14 agreed!
All hail the Ruston King! 😂
Bloody fantastic. Congratulations mate. That must've been an incredible feeling. :)
Cheers buddy. It was absolutely beyond description
Hello hyce!
Sup Hyce
Bird man from the ESnD! Awsome! When are we getting a hyce fleet?
@nickm9123 he is planning on building Zuma form scratch watch his streams
I swear. Once (or If) all three Ruston's are in service, there HAS TO BE a Lawrie's Goes Loco...Loco Gala. We'll call it the LGLG, Lawrie Goes Loco Gala.
Starring all three Rustons in service.
Have 303 Shunting in the yard and as a station pilot.
McAlpine on small trains.
And 165 on bigger trains.
It'll happen!
Lawrie Ultimately Goes Loco
Starring the "Reepham Rustons" :)
I hope so!! Wonderful news Lawrie!!@lmm
Every time I see this thing, my eyes go to that VERY familiar shade of tank engine blue on those wheels....
😂 😂 Some of the British Sugar locos where blue
@@lmm the more yah know, still funny how it's basically the exact shade of blue

fun that over 200% was raised
Madness isn't it
I think it would be a lot of fun to hang out and work on the locomote with him!
@@lmm That's the LMM community at its finest, just madness.
I can't believe this fully functional loco was almost scrapped. It needs a tune up, but it's extremely far from hopeless.
It's mad isn't it. Far too good to scrap!
I had to cheer when it went into gear and started moving. And of course, the excitement when you went through the gears was definitely contagious. Great job, Lawrie!
Thank you very much!
@@lmm all that diesel needs a new coat of paint and it should be good as new
It starts! It runs! All it needs now is a lick of paint.
Couple of other little bits too
@@lmm Like a cab floor.
@@sirrliv my first job at the Severn Valley Railway in my department I volunteer at was modify the floor in our Ruston 165DM to be removable to access the transmission.
Looks like somebody has painted some parts of it fairly recently.
@@bentullett6068 this needs a new floor entirely!
Absolutely superb to hear that this Ruston's been saved! Scrapping it in today's era of heritage railways would've been absolutely tragic, especially with how it works.
It really would have been!
the fact the engine was saved in a day is nothing short of a miracle
so happy to see this old diesel get preserved
Oh it's madness. Awesome, but mad!
Lawrie is a legend! I look forward to seeing your locomotive fleet growing!
You and me both!
He will be after a railway next 😂it’s great to see the engines being saved!
actually i cant believe it was going for scrap
Me neither

Your laugh at 5:19 is so contagious!! I'm glad it works :)
So am I!
Two of the wheeled conveyances procured by Lawrie in un-broken condition have been Rustons. There’s an indication of how hard they are to break in there somewhere.
😂 😂 😂
Your joy was infectious, the pure excitment at seeing and hearing the engine grumble to life before taking off put a smile on my face.
Can't wait to see where things go from here, a lot of TLC is clearly required but I think given how many people donated to the cause it's safe to say we all agree it's in the right hands with you Lawrie.
I'm excited to get stuck in
Lawrie’s next big challenge: Buy one of the Barclays from Thomas Muir in Scotland and get it restored. (Joking of course… though it would be neat.)
stop giving him ideas
Maybe one day!
the happy shouts as she moved was all i needed to be given a smile
I was so excited
@@lmm its great to see cant wait for all 3 to be up and running in the future and im so surprised given she ran normally she was gonna be put to the torch but thats not a worry anymore good job as always. i wish you the absolute best and may the machine spirit bless you and your locomotives.
Now we can finally say that lawrie has a fleet of locomotives. Congratulations Lawrie, you're doing good.
Thank you very much
@@lmm you're gonna some more headboards for all of your locomotives
@@Arkay315 that's a valid point!
As an American I really enjoy seeing these little direct-drive locomotives. Here in the USA, once steam and the narrow-gauges lost favor, pretty much all of the locomotives were the GIANT diesel-electrics. Even the "little" yard-engines are massive compared to these cool little guys.❤
Similar story here, DE was coming into fashion around the time this was built, and by the 60's it was all basically hydraulic or diesel electric
mans is out here, not just documenting history, but actively saving it. Lawrie, you and your community are absolute madlads. keep up the amazing work.
If the scrapyard Ruston is a Lazarus, this one is certainly a Ben Gunn, left behind for dead with plenty of vim and vigor left to give. Both likely owing to Sir William for inspiring a bunch of nutters to rescue them.
Heh, I like that
Lazarus and Ben Gunn could be appropriate names for these machines
@@CrippleX89too right
Well done. To be honest when you got down the yard I thought there was going to be a top gear esque "But then........ Its stuck in gear and wont go into reverse"
We both said that at the time!
maybe the loco working was its own way to thank Lawrie from a sudden death fate at the scrap yard ! nice to see it saved even if i couldnt afford to contribute stuff due to being tight with stuff
It's a far too good of a machine to be cut up!
This loco is going to look fantastic painted up and serviced. Well done.
I sure hope so
I can't wait to visit Lawrie's Heritage Rail Line with the world's most complete collection of Rustons :)
Maybe one day 😂
Yes I'm crying....and so are you. ❤
Was a bit 😂
It was fantastic to see it start up and run down the track. Also wonderful to know it has been saved from the gas axe. It would be amazing to see this Euston returned to its British Sugar livery, as she wore in her Kings Lynn days. Well done everyone!
Do you know if it was blue or green when it was there?
I've seen photos of the one at Ely in blue, but looks like there's green on the bonnet.
Hi Lawrie, great to see this loco running, there's another one on the Strathspey Railway, but it hasn't run for nearly thirty years, after it was damaged in an arson attack which destroyed a GNSR six wheel brake van, it's claim to fame is that, prior to the railway re-opening, it was driven up the Highland Main Line,(try getting away with that these days),by the then head of engineering at the railway, hopefully, one day, it'll be restored, but, like every other heritage line, there's a long queue of locos ahead of it, anyway,as I write this, I've just come off night-shift, and I'm like a zombie, sorry for filling up your comments section, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
Best wishes for getting the thing sorted!
What a shame that people do terrible things like that...
When she started moving I nearly cried 😂❤
Me too watching it back
It's alive!!!! This is absolutely brilliant!
Call me crazy, but I think this engine would look great in red. Maybe it could match Jupes, and you could have TWO big red things!
Certainly would be different
5:18 the moment Dr Lawriestein realised his creation has come alive! also if your on a train and you hear that laugh GET OFF FAST! that is not the laugh of a sane person lol
this loco's machine spirit knew what kind of person you was and wanted to work for you clearly happy to have an owner that will care for it.
That is absolutely splendid!
I actually cheered when she moved!
So did I when I watched it back!
A great video - all the more special because lots of us have helped save that loco. Good to see it going down the line than be crushed for scrap.
It's a far better fate for it! Thanks for being part of the adventure
Next on Lawries Adventures he purchases a HST set with one 1st class 1 Buffet car and 1 standard class
Definitely not 😂
@@lmm Would be a good video haha well done and getting the community together to yet again save another Locomotive!
Even with a little locomotive like that… That’s got to be a rush! Looks so fun!
7:34 looks like a model, except for the smoke
It's amazing how good the smoke generators are these days
IT LIVES! And that rousing music was the right choice.
Thank you!
Thank you Laurie , it does the heart wonders to see these machines saved from scrap or worst.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice locos ,and we saved the 2 0-4-0 Ruston deisel locos at Beeding cement works back in 1986 with the Brighton railway museum, sadly now long closed and both sadly were cut up ,but there nice locos to have.well done and I wish you and the loco all the best ,and another peice of history is saved 😊
Sad for them to be cut up!
Saving them is the easy part, it's what comes next that it the challenge
well done everyone glad we made the target👍
Exploded through the target
AHHHH THE SIDERODS!!! So happy another one of these great "little" machines gets to continue doing the thing! Congratulations to all involved! I wish the folks at Ruston who built it could see the love people have for their (at the time) unassuming little shunters!
That's something I never concidered. I wonder what they'd have thought that 70 years on people would keep them not because they were a piece of plant that earned money, but cause they quite liked the machine.
2:56 remember Lawrie, we put a little bit extra oil to protect everything as you said so it wasn’t spilling anything! 😉
Protecting it for the future!
That's a good all-round locomotive there Lawrie, a wee bit careworn, but a runner with what looks like a sound engine and gearbox. All the very best with this one.........👍👍
Thank you very much!
Not surprised if he opens a Ruston museum
Maybe a museum one day.
It's alive! Glad the lovely little Ruston is doing pretty well considering. The Ruston museum is starting and will never be stopped! You'll be able to get the three perfect paint jobs with the extra money!
Here's hoping for sure!
Lawrie made a sensible purchase - again! (Last one was Humpty)
It's not... That sensible 😂
Congratulations everyone! Fantastic to see the old girl still living.
Superb wasn't it
"Ran when parked" and it still does. Frankly amazing
Isn't it just
I never knew that this ruston's engine runs, i mean at first i never thought it will run because of the condition of the thing but i was actually suprised that it actually works and it drives the ruston pretty well!
Amazing work lawrie!
And your team!
Good old British Engineering that!
That laugh is the laugh of someone that will have a villain arc but his weapons are rustons
What an arc it'll be!
@@lmm yes it will
A fantastic sight , yes certainly a new chapter in its life and hats off to you for getting this saved and lets hope this use of You Tube is a turning point in raising funds for more of our heritage to be saved .
I'm really excited to get her sorted out!
Well, you know what they say about buying vintage vehicles- all you're buying is someone else's problems!
Oh always
The utter excitement as it went up the gears, exhilarating!
It was amazing
That reaction when it moves off, brilliant. 🤣
It was exciting
Lawrie really said “muahahaHahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!👹👹😈” when it worked
I was pleased
@@lmm well we all would be 🤣
Great to see that it turned out to be a runner and not just a large and expensive paperweight. Pleased that my very little tiny contribution has been well invested. Well done Lawrie!
Thank you very much!
@lmm oh I did nothing
Great stuff 👍😃. Always nice to see a piece of vintage engineering saved and working again. Congratulations 👏
Thank you very much
Man, between Sir William and now this one, Lawrie has caused me to really fall in love with these little Ruston shunters. Can't wait to see how she looks once she's cleaned up and pretty again. Though, if i may make a suggestion, the blue wheels and red rods are a great look on her
I can't wait to get it sorted
Lawrie, you and everyone else who save this (functional) piece of equipment are legends. Your enthusiasm for little Rustons is akin to the enthusiasm for little H.K. Porters-small but mighty.
Thank you very much
It’s proof that she wanted to live, and the fundraiser was proof that we all wanted her to live too 🙂 thank you for arranging to save her!
Thank you for being part of it!
@@lmm my pleasure, it was only a tenner but I guess a lot of tenners come together and achieve great things! Looking forward to seeing progress updates 🙂
Fair play to you for keeping this piece of history alive
Cheers!
Now you need a steam locomotive. Maybe try building a new class of tank engine?
A steam engine would need a huge amount of money
Happy to have contributed to this project, can’t wait to see what you do with it
Thanks for helping out! Lots planned!
Cool! Good Save Man! To you and your gang! Nice to see one saved from the scraper!
It's exciting to save it before they got their mitts on it!
Absolutely excellent, loved this and look forward to see what comes with all this 😊
Loads of exciting stuff in store
It was watching you telling everyone about this, Barrington & the rolling stock that made me subscribe, so watching you bring this tired but still great locomotive into life again was just truly wonderful. Can't wait to see what happens next, your enthusiasm and charm absolutely got to me and I was grinning the whole time too. Great video, thank you!
Thank you very much!
Excellent news, thanks Lawrie and team.
Isn't it just!
Back when they started getting phased out I always kinda assumed it'd look odd seeing HST sets sitting around on heritage railways
...and I was right. It definitely does 😅 (Though, of course, I'm happy they've been preserved!)
I do agree. Some places they don't suit the aesthetics, but they're a hugely important part of railway history that deserves to be saved.

It always makes my day when you post, and that is so awesome it's a running loco.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm so happy to see another gem saved! Amazing work Lawrie, and everyone!

Very cool! I'm so glad to see that it has been saved. I live in the US, so who knows if I'll ever be able to visit and see it. 😆 But I'm just really happy whenever historic trains and locomotives and trains can be saved and restored!
So am I!
This is absolutely fantastic! Wishing you all the best with the repairs, servicing and paint job 😄
Thank you!
This loco, sold as "not working": works fine
Literally anything I buy on ebay sold "as new": completely broken

We've done some work to it.
Knowing how a 165 is meant to work has certainly helped!
@@lmm Fair enough!
Well thats a good start then!
Exceedingly

That's fantastic , it's all ok , I agree , lawrie your a star, well done to all the people that saved this , keep us posted on the move , thanks for sharing,
It's pretty stunning!
It’s awesome it still works man! Congratulations!
Thank you very much
Brillant Lawrie so good to see it has been saved and to be part of it cheers
Thanks for being part of the adventure!
Well done to everyone that saved this and Lawrie for saving it. Although I feel a little cross at the Colne Valley Railway for not even attempting to fix what seems like a minor problem and then trying to scrap it because they couldn't be bothered with it.
That's not quite the case - it's privately owned, and the owner has a number of other locos that need time and money.
This was the one that got overlooked.
reckon its time to buy an aqua blaster like the one they use on mr hewes tank channel... mixes sand with water, and makes light work of rust stuff to prep for paint!
That's not a bad idea
@lmm it would save a ridiculous number of hours scraping and sanding... it would also do the chassis, wheels etc etc... I would also consider a scaffolding tent over it too, and spraying the paint back on, be miles quicker than a brush!
Seeing your channel grow and improve is nothing short of wonderful and wholesome. Keep up the great content Lawrie!
I'm trying my best!
So pleased for you that it running
Look forward to seeing more videos on the loco that will now be loved.
Lots planned!
You are doing incredible work Lawrie!! Congrats on ur growing fleet🤣 Cant wait to see this thing restored to it's former glory!!
Thank you! Me neither!
This has be be the most "Mad English trainspotting" thing ive seen ever !

WHOOO! Man I am so incredibly happy for you! I literally cheered when you showed it roll out.Your passion for this is infectious!
Thank you very much
One word
FANTASTIC
Thanks to every body😊😊😊😊
I couldn't agree more
congrats brother... a magnificint beast indeed!
Thank you, she's a right beastie
I love how the wheels look in motion. Especially those counterweight thingies at the rear.
Me too!
That's the jackshaft. Transfers the drive from the gearbox to the wheels. Quite common on diesel-mechanical shunters, quite uncommon on models of such shunters.
Thank you all for making this happen! what a true shame it would have been to lose that sharp looking locomotive.
It would have been a real travesty
The best train video I have seen all week. I am so chuffed with the fact it’s been saved from the scrap heap. Well done
Thank you very much!
The fact it still works despite a minor leak is insane.
It's a good old lump
First video I've seen of this. I'm quite glad you saved it from the scrapper. Here's a token of support!
Thank you very much!
Congrats to everyone that donated to Lawrie, so thankful another marvellous locomotive has been saved from scrap. Also Great video Lawrie
Thank you very much!
Extremely happy for you. Any saved locomotive is a good thing. To have saved a working one is such good fortune.
Thank you, I'm exceedingly relieved
There is nothing more exciting than rescuing something from the scrap and getting it going again! Well done!
It was a good day
Congratulations too Y'all
Thank you!
What a great way of funding a restoration!
It's been incredible
Congratulations. I’m so glad it worked.

Fantastic result. That looks unusually complicated to drive with all the gears and clutch etc but pretty fun too.
It's not too bad, just gears and throttle!
