Thanks for the info. The one thing I want to know is; my d3100 cuts off after 10 minutes of filming all the time regardless of the memory card size. Is this a setting that can be change so filming stays on as long as i wish?
It's limited by Nikon on purpose for a few reasons. If a camera can record video for a certain length of time (I believe 30 mins or more) then it gets classed as a video camera which are taxed higher. So to keep consumer price down they must limit it. Another reason is that extended video shooting can produce heat in the sensor and processor so limiting the shooting time would be safer for the camera too. If you insist on longer shooting times and feel like taking a risk you can mod your camera to bypass the time limit by installing modified firmware. Of course this would no doubt void any warranty and such so be careful if you choose to do this.
I have never heard of the higher taxation of videos cameras but it would make sense as the Nikon d5600 stops recording at exactly 29mins & 59secs which confused me but this seems to be a viable reason. Always nice to learn something new
You can install custom firmware, but i don't recomend that, cuz nikin d3100 sensor's temperature can easily increase, so to avoid overheating nikon set the timer to ten minutes, i think that enough...

Make sure if you are not planning to turn the focus of the lens yourself (as opposed to holding down the shutter release for autofocus), then the switch should be on A, not M.
That's a built in limit by Nikon (and apparently most other DSLR manufacturers). However, there's a hack out there that not only allows you to increase that record time to 17 minutes, but also allows greater bit rates and control in manual mode. Just Google "Nikon D3100 record length hack." Easy to do, just download the firmware, run it through the website, download it to an SD card, load it into your camera, and update.

Because if a DSLR made longer clips than 10 minutes it would be re-classified as a video camera and cost more. It's a European law regarding classification of products.
DSLR's limit your film time to 11 minutes max - There is some kind of software you can get for Canon DSLR's that overrides this, but it's not recommended. You'll just have to make sure you plan your shots and cuts within the 10/11 minute mark unfortunately!

Have you double checked that the dial is turned to either Manual (M) or Shutter priority (S) ? That's the only way I adjust mine

You need to go into aperture mode, set it there, then set it back to manual

Your aperture is too high. Go to shutter priority (S) and go down to 1/50. That should work better.

it is in preview mode for 30 seconds you have to press the red record button to start video capturing... hope that helped
