My German Shepherds caught one in my back yard. I thought it was dead at first, but I could see it breathing. I called my dogs off and eventually it left. I have no problems with these animals. They're really docile and seldom fight back.

Sassy loves cornering them especially when they sneak into our trailer she doesn't like certain intruders but because of her we managed to catch two siblings within a week of each other that last one got further then the first one she literally chased it around the trailer a few times till I realized she was chasing something found it trying to escape her behind a crate had to go get brother to help me catch it i honestly don't think she would harm them unless their bugs and mice only ones I've seen her kill curse of living near woods and fields but she did get a treat both times for cornering them first was in dog food the second behind TV stand took me my brother and sassy to catch the second one me and brother on opposite ends and sassy in the middle guarding the hole that you put wires through I had the trashcan with me brother used a broom and between us three we managed to catch it the trashcan and broom was used as we couldn't reach around the stand to grab it's tail it was in the wires broom was used to push it towards the can which was a success after 5 minutes it didn't want to leave its haven😂

"According to National Geographic, more than 60 opossum species inhabit the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Although possums appear to be large rodents, they are actually marsupials. Opossums are omnivores that live in habitats such as woodlands, farmlands and even residential areas. Differences between male and female opossums abound. Male possums are noticeably larger than females, weighing up to 15 pounds and measuring around 28 inches long from head to tail. Females typically weigh no more than eight pounds. In addition to size differences, you can tell a male apart from a female by the color of the male's chest hair. Males have a skin gland used for chemical communication that stains the chest fur yellow. Females have a fur-lined pouch for raising and carrying infants."
I think this one is a boy. Did you see the yellow nails and yellow on the feet? Also I think I see a small scrotum in the video.

A staple of an opossum's diet is ticks. They stop the spread of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
Their body temperature is lower than other mammals and their immune system makes it very hard for them to get rabies.
They are also the only marsupial native to North America.
Marsupials are animals that carry their babies in pouches, like kangaroos.

I would say it is kinda cute, I will say it is unwise to keep the little fella. It’s a wild animal, and unfortunately must be treated as such. Not to say you should kill it? hell no those guys are good to have around. They can eat ticks like potato chips and are immune to Lyme disease, not to mention they rarely get rabies so they’re not bad to have around. So yeah, make sure the little fella is ok and not injured, send him on his way.

It's called a bluff 😁 If they were vicious, my son and I would take more precautions when catching them. Armadillos have a scary bluff, too. They snort, and hiss like crazy. Now, that is quite terrifying. 😊 We have even caught a mommy skunk and her two babies. They were living under the deck. That was years ago. Mom was trying to kill our chickens. We were able to catch them fairly easily and move them to a new home. We try really hard not to kill predators. We get all different types of animals around our house. As long as they don't try to harm any of our animals, they are more than welcome to live along side of us. 🥰

@@PatriciaG.5050 Have you ever heard an opossum make sounds like a raccoon? I heard raccoon sounds in my backyard but only saw an opossum. I let my dog out but never saw the interaction. My dog didn't yelp or bark so I think the sounds came from the opossum. I know it's rare for them to get rabies but I touched my dog afterwards and I had a cut on my hand so I'm a bit worried lol. I called the vet and they said no need to worry or get the vaccine, but I just never heard an opossum make sounds like a racoon before. What I mean, is, those "in a brawl" type sounds lol

    • @PatriciaG.5050

@dannylaza1326 how odd. 🤔 the only sound I ever heard an opossum make was a hisss sound. It's a bit like a cat when it's fighting, but I'm sure they make a whole lot of different sound depending on the situation. Your vet is right. There is no need to worry unless the opossum bites you. 😁 Then most like you would just need a tetanus shot. They do have a lot of bad bacteria in their mouth/saliva.

@@PatriciaG.5050 Very odd. I never saw the "fight", I just heard a "fight" when my dog went out at night. She looked fine though, I'm a bit of a worrier because the fatality rate of rabies is 100 percent lol. I'm pretty sure I've seen the opossum 20+ days after too. I saved an opossum who was drowning in a garbage can full of water and I think he keeps coming back. For all I know, it was other animals near my backyard that made the sound. Anyhow, Thanks for the reply. Have a good night.
