    For those who were wondering, I did the Joey vs Marik duel with all their card and anime effects with all the "most optimal" plays and ignoring shadow damage. From what I tested, the duel had 2 endings. The split happens with what was mentioned in the video about how Marik didn't attack with his Helpoemer and Drillago and depending on whether Marik attacked 2 tokens or 1 token and Panther Warrior.
    If Marik had attacked the 2 tokens and Joey wasn't playing cautious, Joey would have won in a landslide victory. with Joey at 3900 LP remaining.
    But if Marik had attacked 1 token and Panther Warrior, the duel doesn't have a clear victor. However the end-board was Joey with and attack position Gearfried and Marik has only a face down malevolent catastrophe, no cards in either player's hand, with Marik at 1300 LP and Joey at 900 LP (from what I could recall). Marik draws next, and then that's where it comes down to speculation.
    Despite what Marik would've drawn which I think would've been a monster (unless it was card of sanctity), I believe Joey mkight've drawn something like skull dice and been able to attack for game, but then again Marik still has around 19 cards left in his deck and Joey still has about 26 cards left in his deck. (They both have to have 40 card decks since in the 4-way duel they all had to have a 40 card deck from what I could recall. Joey and Marik went straight into they're duel immediately after that so I doubt that they added more cards right before hand. Also the rest of Marik's deck could probably be reverse engineered from his duel with Yugi.)

      You dont need to test anything. If you have above average knowledge of the TCG you should know that Mariks deck is without a doubt the strongest in the Battle City Arc, maybe even through all of YGO ( although i stopped watching shortly after GX ). If Marik wouldntve fooled around he wouldve beat Joey easily but well, ofc they cant just make Yugis friend get easily clapped.

      The anime duel isn't canon. And Who cares about the anime duel when even though they added a bunch of filler turns the anime wasn't free to alter the outcome of the duel. In the manga duel Joey does not play cautious at all. He consistently attacked at every opportunity, even recklessly. In contrast to Yami Marik who does explicitly hold back in order to inflict maximum pain. Picking up on the turn where Marik plays Machine duplication in order to summon 2 more copies of Viser des, he opts to keep Joey's Panther Warrior with 500 Atk alive so that he could later attach a viser des on all 3 of Joey's monsters and inflict triple the pain.
      If he was serious about the duel, on that turn he would have attacked the weakened Panther Warrior with Viser Des and destroyed it (500 atk vs 500 atk) while Viser des would survive since it was immune to battle destruction. This would cripple Joey's chances big time. On his next turn he draws Gilford the lightning but with 2 viser des attached to Lava Golem and Rocket warrior he can't sacrifice them for the summon until he gets rid of the visers with Graceful Dice. More critically, with Panther Warrior gone, he does not have the 3 sacrifices needed to activate Gilford's destruction effect, and without that he can't get rid of Marik's Viser Des which has 3000 atk thanks to Graceful Dice. So he either stays with rocket warrior and the 3000 atk Lava Golem(which will continue to drain 700 lp every turn of his) or sacrifice both for a weaker 2800 atk Gilford.
      Either way he can't do anything to get rid of Marik's 3000 atk indestructible Viser Des and is at a major disadvantage. If he opts to keep Lava Golem, he'll go down to 1900 LP at the end of his turn to Marik's 2400 LP. Marik will then draw Monster reborn and could bring back anything he wants. If Joey sacrifices the Golem for Gilford, Marik could revive it to his side, and with two 3K monsters out, could attack for game on his next turn.

      @@a.jperez202 I get that's what happened in the manga, but from what I can tell, the duel itself had slightly altered in the anime like with you said about there being viser des instead of plasma eel. But what was being tested was the anime and not the manga. And like you had said, Marik had kept panther warrior and other monsters alive to inflict maximum pain, and not the best moves. But I could be wrong I haven't actually read the manga, so I'm not sure how well that translates to the show. On top of that, it would be the dub version of the show, so I'm not sure what was changed from the original. The duel I tested had these results and changing certain moves in the beginning drastically changes the overall duel later on.

    • @Horiobrine
      @Horiobrine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      *Edit* Fixed my original comment where there was only 2 endings. I had played out the scenario wrong in the beginning resulting in one ending with no victor. - For some reason I can't edit my original comment.
      TLDR; 4 possible endings, Joey wins no matter what.
      For those who were wondering, I did the Joey vs Marik duel with all their cards and anime effects with all the "most optimal" plays and ignoring shadow damage. From what I tested, the duel had 4 endings. If Marik had attacked the 2 tokens and Joey wasn't playing cautious, Joey would have won in a landslide victory. with Joey at 3900 LP remaining.
      But if Marik had attacked 1 token and Panther Warrior, a second split occurs depending on if nightmare mirror can negate multiple attacks or not. If nightmare mirror can only negate one attack, then Joey wins with 2900 LP remaining.
      But if Night mirror can negate multiple attacks, then a third split occurs depending on whether Marik can guess the monster for Question which is panther warrior in this scenario. If Marik isn't able to guess the monster, Joey wins with 2000 LP remaining.
      But if Marik is able to guess the monster, Joey wins with 1700 LP remaining.

      Personally, I don’t think so, nor would he want to. I think Joey is such a good guy and friend that he’d immediately give it to Yugi, knowing full well that only Yugi can truly unlock their true potential and use their power to save the world.

    For the record the reason Joey doesn't sacrifice his three monsters immediately for Gilford the Lightning is because one of Plasma Eel's effects is that the monster it's attached to can't be tributed. That's why the Graceful Dice play was necessary; this is explained in the Japanese version so I'm not sure if the dub fails to mention that or not. I guess that still doesn't excuse Joey not summoning Jinzo/Psycho Shocker though

      @@timmyalley6621 how about this: Joey manages to stay up long enough to take Yami Marik's life points to zero then dies (well clinical death, they still manage to get him help in time) and Yami Marik goes completely berserk and forces Yugi to duel him right then and there and Kaiba gives Yugi the cards he needs to just barely pull out a win before the shadow game starts and he expects them back when all is said and done. The duel goes as it did in canon with the exception of it not being the final match. Yugi does not keep Ra and instead goes to where Joey is being treated and slips it into his deck since he is technically the rightful owner of the card in this scenario (even if he can't use Ra properly, but who knows, maybe Ra will decide to throw him a bone and allow Joey to actually use him). The duel with Kaiba also goes the same as it did originally and the final match is Joey vs. Yugi. Whether Joey wins, loses, or they simply draw is up in the air honestly and I'm okay with any of the outcomes from that point forward.

    • @NinjaLobsterStudios
      @NinjaLobsterStudios ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@RodimusMinor1987 I wish too. It would have been pretty surprising for Joey to resolve the A-plot early. Honestly I think it would have been kind of anti-climactic, so I think there'd need to be some changes to make sure the story doesn't feel rushed. But there's a lot of potential benefits if Joey were to win.
      Firstly, as you mentioned, we could actually get a Yugi vs Joey duel. Since the plot has already been resolved, this can just be a fun duel to give both characters the chance to go all out. I'd write this duel as a draw for reasons I will explain later.
      Secondly, it gives Joey some payoffs. He gets the chance for revenge against Marik, and he finally gets to prove himself as a top duelist by getting top 2 and out placing Kaiba (even if he loses to Kaiba in a direct duel).
      Thirdly, it offers a unique opportunity to explain how Joey gets red-eyes back. After the draw, Joey offers to give Yugi the last God card saying "it belongs to you". But Yugi refuses, saying he can't take the card for free, but he makes a trade offer: Ra for Red-Eyes. I think it would be a nice character-moment to finish off the season, I think people might tear up at it if it was done well.
      I think we would have to miss out on Joey v Kaiba though, which is too bad but I'd say Kaiba's ego can still be preserved because of Marik's misplays. He can say something like "the way Marik was dueling, a child could beat him. Or a dog." It also helps if Joey doesn't beat Yugi, if they have a draw then Kaiba can just end the tournament without feeling like Joey could beat Yugi

      I know, right? It would have been a little anti-climactic to end the conflict here but then we could have been given Joey vs Yugi.
      Joey gets to hang it over Kaiba's head that he got Top 2 while Kaiba gets 3rd (Joey can also get way more respect for his placement). Kaiba can cope by recognizing how bad a duelist Marik actually was, and so long as Joey doesn't beat Yugi then Kaiba can still feel like he is better than Joey.
      As for this other duel, I'd like to see it end in a draw (cheesy, I know, but this is the only way). Kaiba can end the tournament without a conclusive winner. Afterwards Joey offers Yugi Ra, saying he knows it belongs to Yugi. Yugi politely declines, but makes a counter offer: trading Ra for Red-Eyes. Then S4 can start with them having the proper cards.

      Marik probably never gives heavy concern about the duels anyways. Most duelists in the anime are playing cards for sports. Even in some of the shadow games the villains (for example Dartz) simply intend to make a duel a high-stake gamble so both of them will fight with their best efforts. Marik isn’t like these persons at all. The reason why he wants to play shadow game is he can torture people with it. And he also likes to put himself into a safe position. Like during his duel with Yugi according to his original plan, if he wins, both Yugi die, if he losses, the true Marik will disappear and he will take over true Marik’s body entirely. Yami Marik also has little plan to take over the world. His plan is all about making Yugi and his friends feel pain. It is like Yami Marik is a real life psychopath but since this is an anime about children’s card game he can only be put into justice by a card game.

The very idea this video is based on "did joey actually win?" cements that. AND NOT ONLY THAT. Joey's smile as his summons Gearfried and subsequently collapses signifies that he still had the mental faculties to know he won too. Not just the actual duel but he survived Marik's blatant attempt on his life. It was a smile of triumph and faith that his best friend would finish things

    if you see the japanese version (where it is not as censored as in English) the duel actually affects Marik as well, as when Joey (Jonouchi) attacked him with the Rocket Warrior, Marik was about to throw up, the difference though is that while Marik is definitely enjoying it he also has 2 Millennium Items in his possession of (Millennium Rod and Millennium Ring) which, as you know, the Millennium Items increase and replenish faster the overall strength and endurance of their owner, while Joey (something that even made Kaiba recognize him as a duelist) was quite overwhelming odds against him, he was able to hold on and take on the most powerful Egyptian god (in the Anime at least 😝) in a game of shadows.

  • @krfan5459
    @krfan5459 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

    2:36 I disagree with that statement. Rocket Warrior's ability to reduce the ATK of a monster it attacks by 500 only lasts until the end of the turn. There is proof of this when Yugi was forced to duel a mind controlled Joey back in episode 77. So it was not a misplay in my book.
    Edit: One other thing. @ 15:47, he had to use graceful dice to increase Plasma Eel's ATK, and destroy the two copies that were summoned by machine duplication factory. This is because when Plasma Eel is equipped to a monster, that monster cannot be tributed.

Personally, he had the most heart; the most passion; and always faced the most insurmountable odds with a smile - meaning that he never coward in the face of great adversity. He’s a genuine role model to me. He’s a fantastic character, and this duel showed the world that Joey was far from being a 3rd rate duelist with a 4th rate deck. He was the heart of Team Yugi and I’ll forever hold him up as being one of the best duelist I’ve ever seen. Fun fact: regardless of optimization, the outcomes of all of Marik's duels aside from Bakura favored his opponent based solely on how they went (but its Bakura, he never wins). We know Joey would have won if he could have declared an attack and Atem just kinda embarrassed him really with how easily he stopped Ra each time. But Mai would have also won had she simply attacked with her 3 Harpie Lady instead of tributing them for Ra. It wasn't in contention since Marik had a completely open field and Mai nothing to worry about except the only real known hand trap at the time, Kuriboh (but even then, its hand effect did not become canon until Atem used it on Kaiba).

Maybe you could do a Duel Analysis on that Duel. I mean you've already done half of the Battle City Finals already with Yugi vs Bakura, Kaiba vs Ishizu, Joey vs Marki, Yugi vs Kaiba, and even Joey vs Kaiba, so all you're missing is Joey vs Odian, Mai vs Marik, Bakura vs Marik, and Yugi vs Marik.

    A bluff I did in a dual once was in a tag dual, where me and my partner had machine decks. Me and an opponent took each other out but I had one face down left on the field, I showed it to my partner and said "I don't know if you have use for this but it is here if you need it" and when the remaining players both had 100 LP the opponent cleared my partners field but chose to end the dual in style by using all of his available resources to summon Divine Neos. Only to be solemed.😂

    For the question about Foolish Burial's effect to send a card to your opponent's graveyard, YES, there actually is.
    The Fossil Fusion monsters all require that the monster you banish from your opponents graveyard be a certain level. So if Joey really needed to get Skullgios on the field, he could send a level 7 such as his red eyes to Marik's GY, then by using Fossil Fusion, all he would need in hand to pull the rest of this off would be Miracle Rupture in his hand and a copy of Weathering Soldier in his deck. Because Joey is banishing from both Graveyards, per Fossil Fusion, Marik cannot target it with monster effects. It has a lovely 3500atk as well
