Been coaching High School tennis for 25 years. I always make comparisons to other sports like baseball, hockey etc. These players understand zone defense and the concept of following the ball. Also my basketball and hockey players want to go to the net. They are drilled in how to close in and double team the defense. They understand how to move to cut off the ball/ puck. Serving is like pitching baseball. You got to move the ball and know the weakness of batter and throw the pitch that they don’t like. It is much easier to coach players with this type of experience. I loved coaching tennis to hockey players. They laughed when they got hit at the net and you better not cheat them on a line call !

They are not complex but common sense doubles. Doubles 101. But applying them, yes, this is the great challenge. Seasoned Doubles players do these automatically - and then some.

Wow, having played doubles for the last 3 years I was always aware that I didn't know my job. I would always ask for advice on where to stand, what to do, however, all of my questions have been answered in your 25min post. I now understand where to stand, why I am doing this and what to do. I took up tennis at 45 you, played a lot and took a lot of lessons and read a lot of books for 10 years, and then got away from the game for 10 years, gained a lot of weight, and got slow. I've taken off 60 pound(still have 80 to go) and now for the last 3 months, I've been trying to get competitive again. I really stink. So I'm watching a lot of videos to catch back up. I think I learned more about doubles strategy from this one video than any I've seen lesson I've taken or book I've read so far. I really like 2 minute tennis. But I really, really like this video. Thanks. Keep up the good work. One thing I would add. Instead of windshield wipers, I was taught to pretend there is a rope that attaches you to your partner and keep that distance consistent as your partner is moved around the court.
This was so helpful; I am immediately seeing improvement in my doubles matches. Can I suggest a doubles strategy video where you go over doubles service placement-various spots in the box-and what the percentage returns are and what the net player should be looking for depending on where the serve goes?

Good video and collection of strategies that work on all levels. I'm not sure did you mention this on the video but wanted to point out the importance of sideways movement as well (regarding the tennisball being a magnet). This is especially important during serves and returns. If your partner serves out wide, tip #9 says they would be most likely hitting a cross court. Well if they aim down the line, it will still be "cross court" for them if they are pulled far enough so as a net player, you have to also be careful of this and move sideways accordingly. Another point I would like to make is regarding tip #2. This applies most of the time if you are in a neutral position but if as a net player, you are in trouble (picking a low ball etc), hitting it to the other net player would be a bad idea. A good addition to the rule as a net player would be "if you are hitting above the net, hit it towards the other net player but if you are hitting below the net, hit it towards the baseline player." But otherwise a great video.
Pretty solid tips. I'd only amend the tip about court coverage, as some might take it too literally and put themselves out of position in a sense. Essentially, you want to cover the big targets and shrink the open targets available, and make them have to hit too good a shot to win. Essentially you want them to go for high risk shots and take away safe options.

I have been playing tennis now for over two years and also been playing doubles from the beginning. But no one told me, what to do or how to play doubles correctly. After two years of losing all the time and not knowing what to do about it, I started getting frustrated about doubles. Then I found your strategy video... I watched it three times this week, making notices to memorize it. It was awesome to me, because it is all so simple and logical. Then yesterday I met with my friends to play and what should I say: I won both sets 6:3 and 7:6, only with just halve of the tipps! I usually play doubles with the seniors, and their serves are so slow you can time it with a sundial! I actually bring my level down so that I can have fun playing the points out! But any time I am serving I can get easy points off missed return of serves. I love playing tennis with the seniors, they are so nice, and they like the way I play doubles. I know that we can’t cover everything so I give them the alleys and cover the middle. But there are so much to learn about the game of tennis. Great job on the video Coach Ryan. Thank you
These are all incredible tips!! The only thing I might add is for tip 9, if the serve is deep the returner will usually follow the across the body pattern as stated, however if the serve lands short, the opposing net player should cover the line slightly more as the returner will have a much easier time hitting a down the line passing shot regardless which side of their body the ball was on. The same goes for returns.
This explains why I lost many points that I was not supposed to in doubles games. Can't thank you enough!! I cannot wait to try our these strategies in the next match!!

I actually think it’s easier to serve down the middle of the tee because the net is lower in the middle of the net, but I do use the slice a lot on my serves. I appreciate your great coaching strategies Coach thank you.

I find doubles so complicated, but your videos are amazing. We are playing a pretty hard-hitting team on the weekend so I'm excited to finally implement great strategies without the anxiety I usually have of not knowing where to stand or be. I always thought one up and one back is better than both back. Now I know better! And yes, I do remembered my net partner was being ganged up on at the net when I stay back. @20:30 I remember years ago whilst losing a doubles match badly, I then told my partner we should both play back and we had an incredible come-back. This explains it. We eventually lost but still 😂
Two back should be the main defensive strategy for club players, especially as they age. Few club players have the skills to play one up and one back better than two back.....not only the shot skills, but the shot SELECTION skills and the net play and overheads. Lobbing is the most important skill a player can develop for doubles, then return of serve, then volleying. ...and overheads. Two back can also be very effective on offense as well. One thing the teacher got wrong here is that when you are at the net and someone hits a good lob over your head, you should move BACK to the baseline as well as crosscourt. Other wise you are in weak defensive position, while your opponents are in a good offensive position.

If my partner has a weak second serve, should I stand at the service line just in case the returner crash the ball? 2. If I am the net player and my opponent lops me, should I always call "switch" and move to the baseline on the other half of the court as you mentioned in the video, or I can also maybe run back and try to return the lob? On tip 10. I don't go talk between points because I'd have only 2 things to say - "I'll try to serve to the service court, hopefully without double faulting" and "on return I'll aim to the middle, hopefully not hitting the net or out" :D But it makes sense to talk if you notice that you're are making mistakes that need to be fixed, or that opponents are and can be punished.

Great vid. Whenever I’ve tried both players back, the other team just started landing volleys at good sharp angles that were out of reach. Both players getting to the service line is key!
Last week I played the most frustrating doubles team bc ALL they did was lob!!! Every shot was a lob and I was baffled on how to take it! When I play them again, i’ll know what to do, thanks!
I’m Barbara/John (tip 9) I played a lot of cricket growing up and the offside was my fave hitting area. I hit way more inside out forehands, down the line backhands and avoid cross court shots like the flu. But amazing vid, thank you!
I agree with everything you said in this video.. well done.. My partner and I played tournament tennis for many years and we successfully played by these basic strategies that you have outlined. It's especially satisfying to hear someone recommend that the net player peak back at their partner to see if they are in trouble with their next shot or if they are able to hit an aggressive return shot, so that you can better prepare your next possible move to be either moving forward to intercept at net or to get ready for your opponents net man to possibly attack. I've always felt that if I watched my partner strike the return, that I still had a good view of what my opposing net player was doing within my peripheral vision. Most coaches tell the net man to face forward while their partner hits a return shot. But that way you have less time to prepare for the net mans shot at you if your partner hits a poor return.

I play by instinct and in my circle of friend I'm The "serve and volley player" just because they are stuck in the posizione like we are in trench wars....while I try to shadow the ball all time Now I really understand more

I find doubles so complicated, but your videos are amazing. We are playing a pretty hard-hitting team on the weekend so I'm excited to finally implement great strategies without the anxiety I usually have of not knowing where to stand or be.
And to be honest I don't look forward to my doubles comp days because I almost always feel out of place, but now I am some valuable strategies that I understand (most are too confusing) I'm excited.

This is one of the best and easy to understand doubles strategies I have read. Definitely will follow this guidance to improve my doubles game. I always thought one up and one back is better than both back. Now I know better! And yes, I do remembered my net partner was being ganged up on at the net when I stay back. She’s a great net player but she has to deal with 2 net players going at her while I am in the back. Thanks so much!!!

@20:30 I remember years ago whilst losing a doubles match badly, I then told my partner we should both play back and we had an incredible come-back. This explains it. We eventually lost but still 😂
Yes! Both back is an awesome strategy. Underused for sure! Thanks for sharing your memories.
Two back should be the main defensive strategy for club players, especially as they age. Few club players have the skills to play one up and one back better than two back.....not only the shot skills, but the shot SELECTION skills and the net play and overheads. Lobbing is the most important skill a player can develop for doubles, then return of serve, then volleying. ...and overheads. Two back can also be very effective on offense as well. One thing the teacher got wrong here is that when you are at the net and someone hits a good lob over your head, you should move BACK to the baseline as well as crosscourt. Other wise you are in weak defensive position, while your opponents are in a good offensive position.

If my partner has a weak second serve, should I stand at the service line just in case the returner crash the ball? 2. If I am the net player and my opponent lops me, should I always call "switch" and move to the baseline on the other half of the court as you mentioned in the video, or I can also maybe run back and try to return the lob? Thanks again for your help!

On tip 10. I don't go talk between points because I'd have only 2 things to say - "I'll try to serve to the service court, hopefully without double faulting" and "on return I'll aim to the middle, hopefully not hitting the net or out" :D
But it makes sense to talk if you notice that you're are making mistakes that need to be fixed, or that opponents are and can be punished.
This made me win like 10 games thx alot man

Great vid. Whenever I’ve tried both players back, the other team just started landing volleys at good sharp angles that were out of reach. Both players getting to the service line is key!
Last week I played the most frustrating doubles team bc ALL they did was lob!!! Every shot was a lob and I was baffled on how to take it! When I play them again, i’ll know what to do, thanks!

I played a lot of cricket growing up and the offside was my fave hitting area. I hit way more inside out forehands, down the line backhands and avoid cross court shots like the flu. But amazing vid, thank you!

I agree with everything you said in this video.. well done.. My partner and I played tournament tennis for many years and we successfully played by these basic strategies that you have outlined. It's especially satisfying to hear someone recommend that the net player peak back at their partner to see if they are in trouble with their next shot or if they are able to hit an aggressive return shot, so that you can better prepare your next possible move to be either moving forward to intercept at net or to get ready for your opponents net man to possibly attack. I've always felt that if I watched my partner strike the return, that I still had a good view of what my opposing net player was doing within my peripheral vision. Most coaches tell the net man to face forward while their partner hits a return shot. But that way you have less time to prepare for the net mans shot at you if your partner hits a poor return.

What a super informative video!! Thank you so much for teaching me these unwritten fundamental rules of doubles tennis!! It will be super awesome if you could do videos on I-Formation and Australian formation in a doubles match. Are they the same or are they different? How and when is poaching most effective in normal doubles formation versus the above two formations? Following up on that with giving examples of what doubles partners say to each other in between points, and what are the most effective hand signals from net players giving to their baseline partner?
Good stuff about the lob part, ill try it out when we are alowed to double again here!
