Incredible, I bought my champion 10,000 watt generator in February of 2021 brand-new. It's always started with propane but can't start it with gas. I've got other generators so I sort of forgot about it. Just watched this video today, tapped on the starter solenoid started first time, ran it for half an hour with gas that's been in it for 2 years. Thanks to this video!!!!
Thank you... did a few taps, and it cranked right up. Tried my PM cycle in the spring and it would just turnover without starting. Was preparing to tear down the carb and clean it out, fortunately I found your video prior to.
Thanks for this tip! Worked on my 3400 dual fuel after a few taps with a screwdriver. Never had an issue before and this vid saved me a ton of time and frustration. Not sure why tapping on the solenoid wakes it up, but hey, I’ll take it!
Dude! You just saved my sanity! I have three champion gens, the smaller ones always start and run without an issue, old gas, bad gas, neglected, doesn't matter, they start and run. But my dual fuel 7500 w has been nothing but a pain in my butt to get running. Once it's running, it's fine. But I've had the carburetor apart a dozen times, thinking it was jets that were gummed up, but that was never the case. I guess in all the fiddling around somehow I rattled the solenoid enough that it would start working eventually. Now I know how to solve this! Thank you so much for making this video 👍
God bless you! I wish I had seen this earlier before I wasted a few hours. I bought a this exact generator for emergencies. I had it in storage for a couple of years before had to use it. Did fine with a propane tank but I couldn't get it to start with gas for the first time. Finally I saw this video and bam! worked after tapping the solenoid. Why this works or why we have to do this seems like an engineering mistake on Champion's part but I got it to work! Thanks!!
Thanks!! Lightly tapping the solenoid a couple times worked for me too -- after replacing spark plug and changing oil based on the manual's Troubleshooting guide. (It was time to change both, anyway, so no loss)
Champion has a video about how to repair or replace the solenoid. The repair is just using carb cleaner on it. As another commenter stated, the repair is part of the carb kit. th-cam.com/video/fXwfp0xagBA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=waCtd8de2ydYXEDi
Wow, thank you I was out here for about two hours with my new generator hooked up your video, and two seconds later had the generator started in gas mode
Thank you so much. I have same generator and it's never ran off gas but would work fine on Propane. It was used when I purchased it. All it took was a couple taps and it fired right up.
That solenoid lets fuel into the carb when the switch is but cuts off fuel to the carb when the generator is off regardless of the fuel on/off valve so you need to leave the switch at the for a few seconds to allow time for the fuel to flow pass the solenoid to fill the carbs, then after the 20 seconds, press start and it should run fine. I found out the hard way that those generators need the battery to start otherwise the solenoid won't open to provide fuel
my generator sat unopened in the box for years so the battery was too low... I was able to start on propane but not gas. After running a while on propane, the battery still seems to not have charged (the manual warns of this) and I think it needs to be charged externally. So until I fix the battery I think I am stuck with propane only and can't run on gas.
Replacement carbs for these are pretty cheap and will include a new solenoid. You'll know you've got a good solenoid if you hear a CLICK noise when you turn the battery on and move the start switch to the RUN (middle) position. If it's bad you won't hear anything.

Thanks for sharing glad it worked for others, didn't work for me. Took off carburetor and cleaned all parts, reinstalled, and my POS 'Champion' will still not start via gas; fresh gas with stabilizer. Starts just fine via LPG. My WEN stuff never has had issues, multiple issues with Champion generators. Stay away in my experience. My generator has 44 hours on it FWIW.
@@LittlePieceofHeavenFarm just appreciate you taking the time to put this together and share. I am all about path of least resistance and had hoped it would work for me. Bummed a completely cleaned carburetor still didn't resolve my issue. At least LPG works. Thanks again for sharing.
The solenoid on the carb shuts off fuel flowing into the carb until the starting button is switched to regardless of the fuel On/Off valve, so flip the switch to for 20 seconds to give fuel time to fill the carb and then press start, it should run
Wouldn't this only fix if the electric start wasn't working? How about the pull start? The generator would have started regardless if that solenoid was faulty or not, right? Im just trying trouble shoot mine. -Champion 9375/7500W -Sit for 2 years with full tank - Wont pull start or electric start -Im hoping bad/old gas?
Sat for two years, I would change out the gas. Electric or Pull start - Either way, the solenoid has to work to provide the correct fuel that you selected, Gas or LP. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck in LP, by tapping the solenoid, it'll un-stuck the solenoid into Gas Mode, then should start in Gas Mode.
@@LittlePieceofHeavenFarm so I just went out and did the solenoid tapping. Started right up via electric start. I ran it for 10-12 minutes. Killed the run switch and went to go start it again. Now nothing. What a pain in the butt. Should the solenoid have to be tapped on every time now in order to get it to turn over?
@@TheJeepWheeler No, once tapped and starts, it should work every time you electric or pull start in Gas Mode. If you went to LP then back to gas, it could be stuck again. When you turned it off, did you switch it back on ? Other than that, I’m not sure why it won’t continue to electric or pull start. Should stay in stuck.
@@LittlePieceofHeavenFarm maybe the wife and I will head back out later. Yeah the ignition switch was turned back on. I'm not sure why it wouldn't turn back over 🤔
I was setting up to take my carburetor apart...where's my hammer?! That there is the old-fashioned way of fixing things. Fixed the TV many times years ago by whapping the side of it when nothing else would bring in a clear picture.
So, tapping on the solenoid didn't work. All I can suggest and I'm sure you already did this, make sure the LP side is on, and gas is off, propane tank has fuel and turned on, generator turned on.
thanks for the video, i tried that and it did not work. My battery is totally dead. I tried crank starting but to no avail. I will charge the battery and see if that works. thanks again.
I found when my battery went to 6 volts, it was not enough to get things to turn over. Once I recharged it all the way up to 12 V plus, it worked fine.
I don't know about that. It runs fine on propane, it's just when you want to switch to gas, I have to do the tapping thing otherwise it will not start.
It's in Gas Mode. To switch to LPG, turn the gas off, otherwise the yellow switch will not move to the right. Once moved to the right, then turn the LPG switch on. (Red is off, Green is on).

Oxidation on contacts, but with percussive maintenance it's best not to question it and accept it as doctrine.

I know that feeling, those Champion generators can be a challenge! Glad I could help. I just love how something so simple, fixes it all.
Tried half a dozen things on why it wouldn't start... it work out thank you... surviving the hurricane in Valrico Florida (Tampa)... thank you!!
So glad it worked for you. Florida sure has been hammered in the last two weeks. Stay Safe!
Mr Better Late Than Never here... Storm hitting late afternoon today, of course it won't start. Thank you for the quick fix.
We have a deep freeze coming our way, took my generator out to make sure it's running well. All is good to go.
Thank you! After hours of sweating and nothing worked, this did.
This 4 minute video just saved me a whole bunch of trouble ! Worked on the first try !
just about to take my Champion to the repair shop when I looked at your video, tapped twice on it and it started and ran, thank you so much!!
Glad it helped. Champion needs to resolve this issue for future builds.
Just tried your fix and it did indeed work. Had to tap while pressing start after 2 tapping sessions but it then fired up. Great info. Thanks.

BFH!
I’m no expert, but it sounds like my lawnmower when I needed a new fuel filter. Try adding Sea Foam maybe and upgraded gas through a cycle.
Champion support says the solenoid gets stuck when not in use for long period of time.
Just saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank
Awesome
I can’t believe this work, but it did!
Can’t understand why that would help. The starter is working. Used to do that with my old car when it wouldn’t crank.
The diaphragm in the solenoid sometimes gets stuck in propane mode.
Worked for me thanks
Glad it helped
My problem is the exact opposite. It works on gas but not propane.
Never had that issue. I guess tapping didn’t work ?

I think he forgot the choke
Haha, nope. Choke was used, as you well know, you can’t keep it very long on choke as you’ll flood it.
looks to me as if you are on lpg mode

@@LittlePieceofHeavenFarm lol I was mistaken....I went back and moved the selector and it worked fine....
Get a new solenoid check the fuel filter
The solenoid is known to get stuck when your not using the generator for awhile, at least that’s what champion support says. Fuel filter is new.
