It's so cool to see the evolution of Kubrick's films in their time periods. His first film was in the 50s, last on the 90s. It's crazy how much he saw change in the world during his career.
Ivor Biggun he acted really cardboard so when moments of tragedy struck, it comes off as unexpected and heart wrenching. Watch this film again then watch wolf of Wall Street. They both compliment each other
I love how you get all these astonishing, Iconic intros that are meticulous and captivating, then you get to the shining and, despite the jaw-dropping aerial cinematography, the titles themselves looks like they were slapped on by a late-70s amateur videographer working with VHS copies in his basement.
I saw "Clockwork Orange" when it came out. I sat with two sci-fi writers, one extremely famous and one rather obscure. When the film ended we all sat in total silence for about 10 minutes, just trying to digest what we'd seen. Probably the most mind boggling film ever. I still don't totally understand all the ideas that make up this film but I am sure it's one of the greatest ever made.
I think a clockwork orange might be the most effective opening shot in all of cinema. That sense of foreboding that hits you immediately is also present in the shining but that image of Alex is just... gives me shivers. With just music and that stare, you know some terrible things are about to happen. And you’d be right.

i can't say i'm a true fan of kubrick's work because i haven't seen anything made before a space odyssey, but i can say his work is definitely some of my favorite. Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut are the only films i've seen of his, and they're all definitely in my top 15 favorite movies. For some reason every time I hear The Shining opening scene, I always pictured The Funeral March of Queen Mary from Clockwork Orange coming in during it.

I highly recommend Kubrick's older works: Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorites, and The Killing and Paths of Glory are great movies in their own right too (Although it's interesting to compare and contrast his older work with his later work as well).
You would think Kubrick would shoot the head shaving scene in Full Metal Jacket first, but he actually did it last. He made the actors grow back their hair, then he shaved it off again for the opening credits. You can see that all the characters look absolutely miserable, (which is expected for going to Vietnam in the context of the film), but it makes me wonder how much of that was acting, and how much was the actors actually being upset about losing their hair again lol

There’s actually reasons to this 1. The composer of the theme for ACO later did the theme for The Shining 2. Dies Irae plays a couple times in the ACO theme as a bg melody (if you don’t know Dies Irae is the main melody used for The Shining’s theme)
He was working on a holocaust film. But stopped production cause Schindler's list came out. He saw Schindler's list and knew he couldn't top the masterpiece.
There’s no topping THE SHINING & Clockwork in terms of opening sequences. Yes, 2001 blah blah blah is very artsy & quite the achievement in that opening too. But it doesn’t hit me the same way as how those two movies SET THE TONE in seconds!!!! And that camera 🎥 long lens work in The Shining 🤤🤤🤤 good gosh!!!! ((Sorry Stephen King 👑 I empathize how it sucks that most normal people like his film 🎞 better than YOUR book 📚 or that catastrophe mini series you did......but.......... It’s a “masterpiece!”
Jeez, the main title music from The Shining is terrible. It sounds like someone got a cheap synth for their DAW but couldn't play keyboards so they just plonked along one key at a time, adding in some creepy special fx from a patch every now and then. Hard to believe that this is the same Carlos/Elkind who did the soundtrack for A Clockwork Orange.
Fear and Desire was so bad that Kubrick did not want anyone to see it. Killer's Kiss was not much better. He hit his stride with The Killing. James Harris really helped him as a producer, plus Lucien Ballard was a good cinematographer. Paths of Glory was his breakthrough, a really well directed film in every way. After A Clockwork Orange, his films are not worth watching.

Barry Lyndon and The Shining are classics. Full Metal Jacket was the greatest half movie ever; only Kubrick could make basic training more intense than actual war. :) Not a fan of Eyes Wide Shut.
iha asc- Forgive me for being Capt. Obvious, but you're right about Full Metal Jacket and the Parris Island segment being more intense than combat. The most gut-wrenching scene was Gomer being silently and collectively punished at night with the improvised blackjacks (socks with bars of soap).
