Couple of fun facts (that you may already know). 1. The woman singing in 1994 (Sigga) also competed in 1990 and 1992. 2. The man singing in 1995 (Björgvin, Bo is his nickname) is the father of Svala, who competed in 2017. 3. The blonde singer (Stebbi) from 1991 also competed in 1988. 4. Paul Oscar (Páll Óskar) is probably Iceland's most popular singer, to this date. He transcends ages, we've got kids, adults and elders that love him. 5. Sjonni's friends was formed after Sjonni Brink, the original singer of the song, died just a couple of days before our national final in 2011. His friends formed a band, sang his song, won and went to Germany with it. 6. Sjonni's widow wrote the 2018 entry. She's on the stage, to his left I think. 7. Ágústa Eva, the actress who plays Silvia Night, has a band here in Iceland called Sycamore Tree. It's really good and worth looking up. 8. The black and gold dress Gréta is wearing in 2012 is a spin on the Icelandic national costume called Upphlutur. Jónsi is wearing the male equivalent. 9. Pollapönk is a band formed by former members of the pop/punk band Botnleðja, that later became kindergarten teachers. They write and perform songs mostly for kids but we can all enjoy them! Haraldur, the red one, is the chairman of the kindergarten teachers association. The yellow one in the backing vocals is Óttarr Proppé, member of rock band HAM and former MP/Minister of health for the Icelandic parliament. 10. Eiríkur Hauksson in 2007 also was in Bank of Joy, our first ever Eurovision act. 11. Oh, and the singer from 2003 (Birgitta Haukdal) is from Húsavík, the home town of Lars and Sigrid ;)
Just a little add. Nr.7 song was making fun of all the hype around Eurovision. It was all a show and Sylvia Night was a fictional caracter. It is not enaugh to see the song on stage, you also have to see what happened before and after eurovision...
Iceland is kinda unique country, their entries almost always very bright and/or soulful. These groups 2011, 2014, 2019, 2020 have some message behind it. In 2011, it's a very touching story how Icelandic singer Sjonni passed away before the national selection and his friends came together with this song with such touching lyrics, won the national selection and even surprisingly qualified with such a simple song. 2014 is a song in a specific genre against prejudices, and again, so bright. Hatari (my all time favourite) also delivered a peaceful message by these crazy images and music, I can't even out into words how resourcefully it was. Even their a bit boring ballads (2013, 2018) had something special and touching.
Europe had a gigantic collective /whooosh with Silvia Night. She was trolling them hard, talking about golden showers and how everyone was lucky that she was there for them. 😂 Silvia Night was a fictional character created for an Icelandic television show. 😁
No she was created for Eurovision as an art performance but got so popular that they made the TV show, which ended up flopping lmao. It's iconic tbh, when they planted that fake reporter in the press conference and she spit in her face and had her escorted out, too good. Tho the actress basically became a national disgrace when she decided to come out as an anti-vaxxer last year, big rip.
Je ne sais quoi ❤️ I feel so nostalgic and happy every time I listen to this amazing song. And not only the song is amazing and always cheer me up, her live vocals were fabulous, the staging was appropriate and Hera is such a charismatic lady. ❤️ Love the fact that she is still active in the Eurovision area and often performs her song in occasions like Eurovision-pre-party etc. ❤️
Nína and Ég á Líf are the ones I hear mainly sung around the fire or at parties. Nína is the way most popular singalong song from Eurovision. Gledibankinn is also a popular singalong one and Eitt lag enn.
So many good/amazing songs from Iceland. My favourite is Páll Óskar - Minn Hinsti Dans (1997). My runner up is Hera Björk - Je Ne Sais Quoi. Televoting was introduced for the first time in 1997. Iceland received 16 of their 18 point from the 5 countries that used televoting.
Did you see this years Iceland entry on Strictly come dancing last night. Never heard an Eurovision song as a dance song on this programe before so this is a first plus check out the BBC Strictly Come Dancing site where they play this song and all the dancers are dancing to is - brilliant .
My favotes are: Greta in 2016, Dadi (2020), Yohanna, Hatari, Svala, and their 2013 entry I am giving credits to Silvia Night, she was iconic 😁🤣 And i think in 1986 there was Svala's father
Regarding having more of a show... this is a song contest ;) And that is what Sylvia Night was trying to point out. I am not so sure Daði will be putting on much of a show.
i've been so waiting for this. I've always loved Iceland in the contest, but admitted the solo men are much less worthy than the women (or the bands). The top songs for me got to be Dadi, Hatari, and Yohanna, with Hera close behind. Hugs, all, 2sc
I don't know if you read comments on "old" videos, but I wanted to comment on "I hope Nína consented to this song" (1991). this song, while a very nice song and here in Iceland and we sing it all the time (just the starting notes will make everyone get ready to sing), is incredibly sad. It's a song from the perspective of a man who has lost his lover, singing about how he wakes up every day, realizing that she isn't with him. he spends every night dreaming about her, and then has to wake up to the cold reality. EDIT: I want to add that we don't know weather Nína is alive, got a divorce or anything, we don't know the situation in any way except that Nína is no longer with our storyteller Now you are with me, Nina, caressing my cheek, Nina. Hold my hand, Nina, for you know that I will never again I will never ever again never ever spend time with you again. It hurts to miss someone Life keeps on going But why? I don't want to wake up without you Because I know that you will never again You will never ever again never again caress my cheek When you, in my dreams, appear everything is blissful and good and I wish that I could sleep for a hundred years Because the night does only give me a short moment with you When I wake up, oh Nina you are no longer here. I open my eyes, and no one is there to caress my cheek the day is a whole eternity without you the evening is cold and empty without you when the night comes I go to you (the chorus is repeated twice after this and then the song ends)
I love Sjúbídú. Very clever lyrics, great vocals and beautiful dress. Silvia Night was disgraceful to say the least. What an embarrassment for my country.
To this day I still don't understand why people raved about Fairytale (most overated Eurovision entry/winner ever). Iceland should have won in 2009 - Yohanna's performance was flawless & definitely deserved to have won that year.

Ohhh. and another. We have always and will ever looooove Nína.

,,Why are you being silly?" HELLOOO, IT'S EUROVISION!!! The silliest competition on Earth. The silliness is required!
I loved Iceland in 2019, went to see them live in London afterwards and it was amazing. They really put on such a great show

Yeah we have seen it and it was a very nice surprise
My favotes are: Greta in 2016, Dadi (2020), Yohanna, Hatari, Svala, and their 2013 entry
I am giving credits to Silvia Night, she was iconic 😁🤣
And i think in 1986 there was Svala's father
Actually her father is "Bo" Halldorsson from 1995 with Núna.
2019 and 2020 is awesome)
Silvia Night (2006) was actually just an act. She is an actress and her being mean was just a joke hahah
Poor Iceland came second twice after another Scandinavian country 10 years apart.1999 Sweden and 2009 Norway
I love Selma so much! She should have won in 1999😞
Agree! Selma did a fantastic job!

My favourites are 2020, 2012 and 2010 - I love them all.
Just a small correction: Iceland is Nordic, but not a Scandinavian country (that would be Sweden, Denmark and Norway).
I don't know if you read comments on "old" videos, but I wanted to comment on "I hope Nína consented to this song" (1991). this song, while a very nice song and here in Iceland and we sing it all the time (just the starting notes will make everyone get ready to sing), is incredibly sad.

Now you are with me, Nina, caressing my cheek, Nina.
Hold my hand, Nina,
for you know that I will never again
I will never ever again
never ever spend time with you again.
It hurts to miss someone
Life keeps on going
But why?
I don't want to wake up
without you
Because I know that you will never again
You will never ever again
never again caress my cheek
When you, in my dreams, appear
everything is blissful and good
and I wish that I could sleep for a hundred years
Because the night does only give me a short moment with you
When I wake up, oh Nina

I open my eyes, and no one is there to caress my cheek
the day is a whole eternity without you
the evening is cold and empty without you
when the night comes I go to you
(the chorus is repeated twice after this and then the song ends)
Very deep meaning. Thanks for sharing.
it is the same Gretta, check her stuff out in Spotify she is really good .
Eyþór Ingi and Ari Ólafsson are My uncles lol
I was struck by how you know so many Icelandic songs! 🤔
Has to be Yohanna ❤️
I love Sjúbídú. Very clever lyrics, great vocals and beautiful dress.
Silvia Night was disgraceful to say the least. What an embarrassment for my country.
