      Don't let Master Lock find out about this or thier next product will be a Velcro based locking system. Tho thinking about it now, it might be more pick resistent than thier current lineup...

    I'm still in shock that I've found a TH-cam channel in 2018 that:
    A. Doesn't use click bait titles and thumbnails
    B. Doesn't use annoying ukulele / xylophone or EDM music throughout the video
    C. Organizes the videos perfectly
    D. Actually enunciates words so people can understand them clearly
    E. Isn't trying to sell me t-shirts or get me to donate to patreon.
    F. Doesn't steal other people's content
    And most importantly
    G. All of the above in one channel
    Best subscription I've ever made lol.

      Remember he was using the cheapest tool he could physically find that he thought would stand some kind of a chance. A thief would probably go for a tool that is slightly more expensive and slightly more suited to cutting steel cables.

      Well, the advantage of cable locks is that they are long, flexible and light. I think most people just don’t think about their lock’s security and just use whatever’s convenient.

      Newsflash...you're getting tunnel vision on bikes. This vid and channel says more about society than ' bikes '. This applies to everything you own, including your house/aptmt, vehicle etc and 100% of the contents inside. There are over 2 million people in prison in the US and that's only bc there isn't enough to hold the 20 million that should be in there. There are millions of predators out there who will straight up knock out an 85 yr old woman for 30 bucks and not give a shit if she dies in the process. Bikes are the least of your worries. Save your money for a Glock.

    I, like most of my friends, have this as a complement to the shackle lock to keep people from just releasing the front wheel and walking off with it. Wheels lost without it: two in one year. Wheels lost while using it for the last eight years - zero.

      I see an awful lot of People who use those Locks as their main and single lock to secure bikes, that are triple the value of my piece of Junk.
      Tough I suppose even tough it's a city of 500k, crime rates seem to be quite low here. Tires getting stolen - even with quick release - that rarely happens here. And bike theft is pretty low, I'm glad to say. So anything, even just a detterent, will prevent the worst things here, unless the bike is very valuable.

    Junkies over here in Amsterdam do this with the cheapest wirecutters. They simply pretend to have bummed out next to your bike and start nibbling away at the strands under their coat. It might take an hour or so, but it's simple, quiet and very stealthy. Wire bicycle locks are no good over here, you might just as well give your bike to the next bum passing by. Only a hefty chain with serious lock connecting your bike to something solid will stand a chance.
    As allways, great video.

    I live in Finland and own a Jopo (a very popular simple bike, which as new costs about 350-400€) and those are a very common steal here. Usually you can see them around with one lock on the body securing the rear tyre and a wire lock "securing" the bike to a post. Mine has 4 locks: kryptonite U-lock to secure it from frame to a post, a lock on the frame for rear tyre, and 2 wire locks (one for front tyre and one for saddle, so no one steals just those parts). So every time I use it I need to open 3 locks. Better safe than sorry.

    I use cable locks because they are convenient and keep the honest thieves honest. Most are opportunists and the slightest bit of defense will deter the majority. If someone wants to get something bad enough they will find a way. Having said that, What is your recommendation for a cable lock that has the highest security? I use a very thick stranded cable and a war-lok padlock at present.

    • @BD90..
      @BD90.. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen locks that are very thick cable locks.
      Most if the time I see thieves using the cable cutters and guess what....sometimes they just pull hard and defeat the cable lock too.

    Cable locks are only good for locking the front wheel and seat of your bike. Rear wheel and frame locked with good U lock that locks on both sides of shackle.
    Or a thick hardened security chain.
    Never use cables for the whole bike/frame! Even for quick stops, look how quick that was.

    Honestly I'm surprised it lasted so long. I'm someone who used to use the cheapest of cable locks, and probably still would had circumstances not changed. But not I no longer cycle and I have an abundance of motorbike locks there's no real reason for me to use a cable lock. Still, I've learnt a huge amount about simply how poor some locks are and how oversold the protection of most locks is. The biggest shift in mindset was going from thinking locks are impossible to defeat, and learning to think in terms of delay and skillset required.

  • @RealUnimportant
    @RealUnimportant 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The key thing to remember here, as anywhere, is cost versus value. For a small initial cost, any of these handtools offers a thief significant value because they can be used repeatedly. The cheaper snips like these might not be good for more than a dozen of these cables before they become too blunt to make it through in a timely manner, but that brings the overall price to roughly a buck per trophy. The more expensive ratcheting cutters will probably be good for dozens if not triple-digit trophies, meaning their end cost is pennies. If you steal a couple-dozen bikes per day, that's potentially hundreds or even thousands of dollars of profit.

  • @CheddarCheeseBandit

    There is an endless supply of wire-cutter-shaped objects out there which are so blunt and misaligned that they can barely cut anything. I have a feeling that those sorts of tools are what people are basing their expectations upon.
    That said, I wonder why nobody makes cable locks with a hardened solid wire in the core. It would be a bit stiffer, but most diagonal cutters aren't rated for hardened wire like guy wire or messenger strands in ACSR . It'll just put a nice notch in the jaws. It could still be defeated if nicked and bent back and forth, but with all the surrounding cable strands needing to be cut too (with likely damaged jaws), it turns into a much more frustrating (and likely bloody) mess. ... although I guess the rubber jacket actually makes it safer for the person trying to cut the cable.

    • @emenha
      @emenha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tool steels can be quite hard, anything significantly harder than that is brittle. So you'd end up with a rigid heavy lock that offers no advantage over a U-lock.

    • @PSUQDPICHQIEIWC
      @PSUQDPICHQIEIWC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suppose it's fair enough to assume that cable locks in general exist simply to fill the lower end retail market. Still, we should know well enough by now that price is rarely a good indicator of quality. I'm sure there are plenty of lock designs out there which were more expensive to manufacture, but are ultimately less secure. I have to be suspect of conspicuous use of things like carbon fiber where it serves no purpose but marketing.

      I never mentioned tool steel anything. I mentioned steel wire. Most of these cables appear to be something like a 7/19 strand configuration. I simply mentioned replacing the center bundle with a solid wire -- a change which does not significantly increase the weight of the cable. Would it be stiffer? Yes. I already mentioned that.
      The wire used for electrical supports is (as far as I know) not a steel with considerable alloy content or even a high carbon content. It's simply hard due to being work hardened. This kind of wire is utterly ubquitous in utilities, and is neither brittle or expensive.
      Would it be harder to cut than a U-lock? That's not really the point I was striking at. A U-lock is not a cable lock, nor does it necessarily meet the application requirements of what a person might expect from a cable lock. The goal wasn't to make a cable lock that's better than all other possible locks -- simply a cable lock that's better than other cable locks (at least against such simple attacks)

    I use a U lock, secured to a post/rack through the rear wheel & frame of the bike. My cable goes through the front wheel & my helmet, and is locked to the U lock. Cables are crap for securing the whole bike, but they're a reasonably lightweight addition to allow for securing both wheels at once.

    I noticed so many companies state 12mm cable. They are technically aren't lying about the measurement but some companies are using thinner metal cables and thicker rubber tubing. I can see it through the see through tubing. Even with the thicker metal cables inside, I don't think it makes a significant difference in time to cut. I am surprised that it was that quick to cut with such a small wire cutter. I see so many bikes in the +$1k range that are locked up with cable locks. I have combination cable locks and a bunch of accessory cables. Only cables to lock the front wheel and helmet for me. I have a kick scooter and I wouldn't even trust cable lock for that.

    cable locks are only good for using together with a decent lock, I use it to thread through the front and back wheel so that people can't undo them and walk away without using any tools. I also sometimes use it to attach the bike to something if it's too far for the lock to reach it, and just put the lock around the back wheel and frame so that it can't be ridden away even if they cut the cable.

    Nice tool review lol. I was looking at getting a pair of those Stanley compound action dikes. Lowes sells a pair of mini bolt cutters that size that work fairly well. I use them to cut nails and welding electrodes. Cheap, too. The first pair lasted me about a year and a half (lifetime warranty, though and I used them A LOT). Kobalt Model 55767. I also have a pair of HK Porter's the same size that are AWESOME, but cost 4 times as much.

    Just have to point out that even the weakest locks will greatly lower the chance of your bike getting stolen.
    At least in my area most bike thefts are made by drunk people or narcomans who use it to get near their home/shelter and throw it to the ditch after few km's and having any mean to stop them from just driving away will help :D

    If I had more experience I'm sure I could have done it, but I had an old cable lock on my bike that I had forgotten the combo to. I took a cheap multi tool (Ozark Trail I think) and used the wire cutter on it and almost got through the entire thing. Fairly confident I would have if I actually had experience cutting wires.

      @@2450logan battery grinder can cut almost anything you use to secure a bike, but they are heavy, hard to conceal, and very very noisy.
      Also, using a grinder on a chain is difficult, because it moves around when you try to grind it.

  • @zachwhite2716
    @zachwhite2716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would have been even faster and required less overall strength if you had used the tip of the cutters to cut through a thinner cross-section of the cable. Basically, cut to turn the O into a D, then rotate and cut again to take off another chunk, repeat until you've made it all the way around, and then make one final cut through the cable.

    It's even easier to cut than he makes it look. If you pinch the cable a couple millimeters at a time with the tip of the cutters, you can very easily cut through even quicker. You're kind of shearing it instead of chopping it.
