I'll never understand how someone can call a pro skater a sellout for getting money from things that isn't skating
I hear you and you gotta remember even though professional athletes who play basketball baseball football make more than skateboarders even they have to some of them after they're done playing they have to go into finance or you have to go into commercial real estate or they obviously take part in restaurant chain ownership, and what not sodefinitely there's probably no such thing as selling out lol unless you Bill Gates ha ha
Ignorance & Jealousy
The only way I’d call someone a sellout is skating for corporate companies over other skaters brands. Don’t get me wrong you have to pay the bills but if it’s something you’re sponsored by that’s not apart of your life style then that’s selling out just to make a check
@@Lemoncrusher4455 The problem is if you're starving being on a core brand & signing to Doritos allows you to pay rent. Who are we to judge? I'd chose Doritos over Nike because they're not putting skate shops & core brands outta business & gobbling up the industry.
Kook don’t get a lot of things. How has selling out to Nike and corporations worked out for skating? Oh yeah everyone is poor lol
Chet Thomas, there’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. Sick skater.
that first part in Public Domain, in black and white, with the McRad track.
I remember an interview where he said he was learning physical therapy for a post-skating career. I fully expected him to say Chet was doing that
He was on here too
My first skateboard was Chet's signature Darkstar in the early 2000s
He's still around and super active on the insta!
It’s a marketing competition now. What do you wear, what’s your gimmick, what’s your personality like… all these things are becoming way more relevant cause “everyone is good at skating”. Basically a popularity contest and I see why that turns off a lot of people
Legit always been like this
Chad Muska wasn’t the worlds best street skater, he was really good but he also looked really cool skating the clothes the shoes, what he did on the board. That’s what counts
@@Not_stoked 100% but there were definitely more skaters going pro based off skill alone
More money for the highest talent and video part / clip producing guys but the pool of money is less since everyone is so good and sponsored "ams" and guys on flow are dime a dozen now. More and more skate companies as a result, and with instgram and youtube etc everyone and their crew can make a team and market themselves and their product.
@@ponmlk people still just want attention for themselves.
The word sellout is a joke to me . U get offered a sh_t ton of money you’ll take it too
Nah that's weak
@@jimisijohn Sure. You’re going to pass on a big pay day. For reasons.
Yip. If a company allows you to live the pro (sports) life, you are living the dream, not selling out.... Ain't no one else going to be covering your bills ....
While we shouldn't mind if someone takes a lucrative deal, it depends on the reasons. In the video they said not to get into skating for the wrong reasons (money not love) but also said to take that modeling gig to get money, which is fine if that's what you want to do but not if you feel forced, or you will feel like you're forced to sell out... It's tricky.
We also see a lot of instagram/tiktok "influencers" who advertise junk to their followers because some brand behind them is treating them like a puppet to push merch. Ads are fine, but not when the person doing the advertisement feels totally gross that they're reading some script they don't believe in.
@@jimisijohnain't nothing weak about it as long as you're not taking sponsors from shitty companies just for a paycheck. You're full of shit if you say you wouldn't take 50k for a 20 second ad it something.
Skateboarding is going back to the roots where you don't give a fuck about the money but still Skate for the love and passion of it
Well the reason some don’t give a fuck about the money is because they know there is hardly no money to be made, so what’s the point in worrying about that? Do it while you can, then get a real job with benefits and start saving for retirement. Maybe Nyjah can share some of his wealth.
They also make money off social media
Never cared about being inanely good or making money, I just love the sound of grinding concrete and coping like a Autistic child loves trains
Love and passion doesn’t pay the bills
i miss old skateboarding feeling
Me too. Just fun.
When skatinh ironically had more money in it before kooks like Koston sold out the first chance he could get to nike.
since Nike came into the Skateboard game it all went downhill for smaller Brands...
It’s gone forever. Corporations absorbed it and now make money selling it back to you.
me too. We didn’t know how good we had it. So much purer, less gimmicks involved
Moral of the story: good luck to everyone and their families. Do what’s right for you. Love and enjoy skateboarding as is, that’s it.
If you take the money, you're a sellout.
If you don't, you can feed your family or probably even have one.
That was awesome. I skated for Billabong for 5-6 yrs in early 2000s and was always ashamed to wear their gear because it was a surf company. They paid me as an am and sent me all over the world and I still only wore shirts of the music I liked and shit. They asked me on a tour once to wear their shirts more. Back then it could ruin your career to skate for a surf company. I'm glad people don't care anymore about that and let skaters make their living!
So you were part of the problem. Got it
Donnie Barlie sponsored by them? He ripped?
That seems so weird. Surfing got me into skateboarding. Surfing is the OG
crazy
skate & surf bff
Bro you clearly have white privilege you were given a brand to wear and advertise as a pro skater and you told them to shove it and was still payed and sponsored by them.
Skating reminds me of the music industry so much. I feel like back in time, like 1990's, 2000's, the aim was to get signed by a label (sponsored by a board company) but now the approach is DIY, you have to do everything yourself, make your own music, get someone to mix it, pay for your own studio time, make your own CD's, find your own shows, or some ppl even go the route of making content on tiktok etc (make your own graphics/tshirts, film your own videos with friends and hope the algorithm helps you) but in a way it feels so nice to have ownership in your own work and seeing all the indie skate videos coming out its literally so sick like interceptor from bristol uk, or the old lurk nyc vids, maybe they wouldnt exist had the landscape/technology changed
good comparison!
I'll skate for beer & cheeseburgers man
Hopefully now that we’re in an influencer culture where we see more regular people we actually back and support hustling on social media to make a living, we no longer hate on people “selling out” and understand more about what and why they’re doing things to keep entertaining us and bringing light to our days, while doing what they need to do to eat and sleep comfortably.
Can confirm. I was fortunate enough to meet Cody Cepeda in a random grocey store near his home town in Michigan. The store simply happens to be on the way to my grandparents cottage. Got to talk to him for 5 minutes or so and he really opened my eyes to how much pros are actually paid and how much they sacrifice to pursue their passion.
In this economy, maybe we have 50 people who really are “pro” skaters.
There's only so much money all of the companies in it besides the sports brands in shoes can realisitically have going around. Board companies do not make at all nearly as much and pros with boards that have their name on it aren't making the 5-6 figure royalty checks like the 80s and 90s. The shoe sportsbrands with a DEEP money pool aren't putting out signature shoes like the industry used to, call it greed or smart or skimping, but they've all decided only 3-5 pros have signature shoes at any one given time. The 2 revenue sources that could net you 100k+ a year in the 80s or 90s simply aren't there if you're a pro that isn't the top 25'ish.
No way lol there is like 1000 actually pros if not more
@@TheRealPapaChico no way 😂
~200
That's more than enough
Times have definitely changed. I’ve seen more pro skaters make TH-cam channels and I remember they used to talk crap on the TH-cam skaters now all y’all have TH-cam.😂😂😂
🤣🤣 15 years ago “gaaaaaaaay”
I’m a house painter too and skater but I’m starting to give up the skating cause I know it’s not making me any money and I can’t afford to get injured and not be able to work
it’s a painful one, quitting skating to avoid injury and protect your income. That one sucks
That’s the absolute worst part about skating imo, that someone may have to quit due to injury or fear of injury. Theres like no way to mitigate that unlike every single other sport. It’s sad man I hate seeing someone having to stop their passion
That happened to me in 2021. I was 27 became a Nurse. And had to stop. I try to skate here and there but I’m still scared of injury.
@@oscarag9053 just don't do stairs or rails anymore or anything above a 4 stair. I'm getting back into skating but I also box at the gym so I need my knees lol. Most of my severe injuries from skating during my prime skating years always came from trying to do big stairs and rails. I'm just sticking to flat ground, manual pads, and bench ledges for now on.
Skateboarding is kinda weird in that pro skaters are basically paid to be pro to inspire kids to skate. But for a corporation it’s hard to justify paying someone a ton of money to be like a shoe model or whatever it’s just part of the marketing business. It’s never gonna be like it used to be.
It’s a shame skaters don’t make more because they are such great athletes! But the reality is there’s no TV money, no merchandise money to boost up salaries. Unfortunately lot of pro athletes are in the same situation. I may be bias but I think skaters are the best athletes in the world
There used to be. The no merchandise thing is a very big thing. Skate companies aren’t taking risks anymore which is financially the smart decision but our industry is suffering from it. Bring back mall demos with big names, the magazines so skaters can get photo $$$ and let’s stop letting everyone make their own brand. Soon skaters are going to sign under other skaters instead of companies.
Great athletes majority of them are fucking drunk and smoke weed and I skate. They don’t run and train that was the problem with skating years ago it had the chance to become something but one person dominated and no one watched cause no one takes skating seriously
Skaters are nowhere near the best athletes in the world man. Some of the best skaters these days are children. The smaller you are the better you’ll be at skating
Yeah but their degenerates. They damage property and wanna act cool about.
@@Iskatebaker412
Idk, I’ve played every sport with some success, but skateboarding is no joke
Decenzo found the fountain of youth.
It’s cuz he dresses like a 13 year old
@ ahahaha some truth here
He looks great for almost 40
I think and say this to my friends allll the time. I'm like you guys do Realize how old Decenzo is right?
The price of living in LA and SF, its insane its still the skate capital for the least paid athletes. If the scene moved itd be great for everyone. No one even cares about LA spots anymore
The problem with skateboarders, is that they feel sponsored skaters should only be making money from the skateboard industry. Money from any other avenue is not to be considered.
The thing is it should make you enough money where you dont have to work another job if you dont want to.
@@braxtonvestal777- you keep telling yourself that…
@SlickRick4EVER if you have to work another job you're not a professional skateboarder... thats applicable to everything.
@@braxtonvestal777false, you’re under an illusion. Tell that to the top musicians that also work in other music adjacent avenues. No matter what I say you’re not gonna believe it, but you need to experience the inside and you’ll understand
@@braxtonvestal777 fact.. if you're not making money from what you do, then it's just a hobby.
just saw tom asta s video about how his es contract ended....good luck to everyone trying to make a living in skating...
Doubt he gets a nine club invite for a while now. Sad how that all played out
Social media has changed everything there’s almost no part of life it’s not touched and pro skating is no different but if you can get sponsorship go for it but always skate cause you love it 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
The fact people think pro skaters have ever gotten paid good is hilarious hahahahha, it’s literally only a very few popular skaters that get payed bank. Everyone else is lucky to make a couple grand a month
Literally don’t know anything. You could make bank getting sponsored by a bolts company in the early 00s. And no your name last name didn’t need to be muska
They actually did get paid pretty good up until the early 2010s….
I was getting more than that in the early 2000's, and I was just a random pro from Australia, who didn't really make it big.
Couple grand a month isn’t horrific tbh back then, now it’s a little rough but still not horrific
"in the early 00's" and how did that business model go when skateboardings trendiness died? Oh that's right
This is why I will NEVER hate on the competition-style of skating, especially avenues with the Olympics.
You want to be a “core” skater, stick to the streets, and skate to maybe get a picture in Thrasher? You can! That’s awesome and I genuinely wish you success.
But if you want to be sponsored by Nike, go around to events competing for energy drinks, and potentially compete for your home country? You might have the best lifestyle and income of any skater.
There are a million avenues now, but only a few of them keep paying well. Choose whatever makes you happiest, but know that some pathways might be more lucrative than others and don’t hate people who choose them.
Bro most of us are out here working 3 jobs just to get by no matter what industry you're in. Especially if you live somewhere like NYC or California, I know people who make 6 figures and still have side hustles or their spouse ALSO works a couple jobs just to get by.
Sounds like a problem with America at large
@@MBRoa22 It's called the Cantillon Effect. Dive into luxuries for too many decades in a row drives up inflation, which results in an increase in imported goods, which eventually results in investors moving manufacturing overseas because it's cheaper, which has then resulted in the US selling debt packages instead of manufactured goods, and now here we are with the wedge between the rich and the poor steadily growing every year. The solution to this is something that no one will want to participate in. So instead we're going to nose dive straight into the ground.
Learn the term social capital. Being a pro skater is very cool, that is the payment. Cool points
Then turn the social capital into real capital, if possible
A pro on baker once told me he was getting 300 a month i will never say his name because of the respect i got for him but this skate industry dark almost doesn't make sense there should be fine lines how to take care of someone putting there bones on the line for the company they ride for but then again its all about marketing more than talent nowadays
He should be getting 3k a month. $300 a month for a professional is crazy.
300/month is mad but let's be real :
1. Prob gets 10-50x free boards per month.
2. Probably gets clothing aswell.
There are many ways to structure remuneration.
This remuneration value could easily be worth $1000+ per month.
End of the day it's a well known fact that if you're going to make good money in skating, it's from shoe or board royalties....
@BroskY250 yea it's crazy baker is my favorite too. But most the big pay days come from the shoe companies, aka nike sb. Adidas skateboarding, new balance numeric etc.
@@zadekeys2194right all the other stuff you get too you could sell half if you needed that's another 600 a month still only 1k a month but shoe deals are the big money especially the big brands. And energy drink companies Rockstar monster redbull etc.
Like Reynold's said being on Baker is an opportunity itself, and what someone does with that opportunity is on them. Like Jamie Foy for instance works hard everyday, does every interview, youtube video, etc that he can to get his name and image out there so his sponsors can pay him more. You can't just treat skating like the 90's anymore and put a video part every 3 years. It's an everyday grind and the guys who workd hard make the good money.
That's why kids need to graduate from high school and hopefully attend college or some type of trade. Too many young kids get stuck in the tunnel vision of getting sponsored or pro.
Especially now; bc it’s possible to become a pro in your late 20s or even 30s! I think of Tanner B. as a recent example. That use to be impossible in the early 20s.
@@jamaljones5647same thing happened in my industry, music, it’s cool asf that we see 30 year old pop stars and punk singers now
Skateboarding is smthg you should only do for fun, because you love it, this will make it even purer because you’ll understand that that is the only reason you’re doing it for, that’s it.
Then you can find another skill to make money, like investing or making any other business.
These days there isn’t much difference between skating for a shop and skating for a board company. You’re still broke, but at least you’re having fun.
Ryan always with triple drinks beer, red bulls, whater, coffe all at the same time jajaj
I’m not even a pro skateboarder and I need 2 jobs to survive
Radon testing is really important. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
😊god damn🎉❤ keep it going, phelps saw it comming
Hey Chris, Kelly and everyone else on the podcast, thank you guys for what you do. Brings back memories. I did a video on my channel titled "Evil In The Skate Industry." I'm curious to know what you guys think of what I talk about. I'm not asking or expecting you to bring up my video while doing an episode, but I wonder if the stuff I talk about will ever be talked about by pros like yourselves on a public platform. I wish you guys the best! Keep it up and peace! 🤞🏻
I remember waaaaaaaaay back when wanting to be very good at skating and had random dreams of getting on Flip or BLVD skateboarding. Injuries, laziness, and life in general pulled me in different directions. Now I can buy as many boards and shoes as I want and I have health insurance, and I don't work manual labor.
Having seen a number of Pros come through Chicago and kids trying to get on, trying to make the skate life happen is ROUGH. Even back then it was only a few who were making great money skating (Think of Plan B around the Superfuture era). So many brands we loved didn't make it and shops are closing. I knew the nail in the coffin was during covid when I couldn't get bolts and pivot cups at any local skateshop but Amazon had them for shipping next day. The industry shrank and the pie is so much smaller even though there are technically more skaters than ever.
whoa this whole idea is blowing my mind away.
Don’t even worry about it like Ryan said it’s true gotta have that mind set of owning what you do and knowing your worth and just do your thing balanced. Ryan’s 37 chillin still hucking. It’s crazy takes very good care of himself to be doing that still. Respect. ❤💯
I used to think people were sellouts when I was 17 years old. Then I grew up lol. Making money from the thing you love is the DREAM. ALSO selling out your integrity isn’t really a thing when you still skate the same.
Damn damn damn!! Im back bro! I absolutely missed this show. Havent been on TH-cam for long time months and 9club was the 1st thing i typed in. So much i missed.
Did you guys get a Jamie G interview?
A lot of what they’re mentioning is exactly what’s going on in the music industry now. Hard to “make a living” because everyone is out there on social media. So it floods the market/ devalues everyone’s work and efforts. You sell your own merch and records without a label, and you have 2 part time jobs, maybe as a sound guy, and grocery store clerk, so you can take off and play music when you can.
Well hold on now, as someone in the industry it def sucks but I’ll say it’s WAYYY better than what’s going on here because of the amount of ways we can make money. Our main way, record sales, is gone. But at least I can leverage my Spotify numbers to get booked locally which is payment, then sell merch at that show which is payment on top of that, then sell features or production to anyone that sees me, which is payment. But skateboarding… Jesus man.
@@notreallyafamousartist695I’m in the industry too. It’s damn near impossible to make a living off of music. You have to be MASSIVE and play large capacity venues regularly in order for it to work… which is a small percentage. Gone are the days of touring and playing 300 cap. clubs and working your way up to make a living, surviving off of record sales too. Spotify has ripped off artists: it takes 800,000 monthly streams to only make $15/hour. And is hard to find a decent paying job that will allow you the time to go tour and pursue a passion. Used to be that you could work a part time gig that was enough to pay for a small apartment? Snd you could rough it trying to live the dream. Now, only those with luck and money can do that.
"It doesn't matter, you stayed on the board". Great video gents.
Skated with these boys back in the 00s and they were so rad Ryan kickflip crooked this like 4 stair rail which we made really tall and sackable cuz that's how we do it in maryland we build shit high and let ppl build upto it but Scott decenzo switch crooked the hubba next to it which was like a foot taller than the rail lol but these boys were catching flip tricks wayyy before and above the obstacles and lockin in at the top which is really nutty cuz it's still like 4ft off the ground 🤣 I'm 6ft they were popping up to my chest. Btw Scott is hella quiet and humble and Ryan's the kinda guy u can't be afraid of cuz he's givin u props the whole time ur landing stunts!
I think an issue is no one tells skaters to have a backup plan. It's like you're not a true skater if you're not starving and sleeping on a friend's couch. If going pro is your goal, learn a skill that can supplement your income while you chase your dream.
Skating is just becoming less popular to the public so there’s less attention and demand so naturally there will be less money. Skating was such a big part of the era back then
The public has never been about skateboarding...skate stoppers come from them, and jaywalking tickets for crossing the street, Karens getting the way, the list goes on
REALITY CHECK, WE ALL DO.........................
Capitalism. It's just Capitalism. If we want the most incredible people in the world to make a living doing their particular niche, then we need a system that values human lives before profits. It's literally just that simple.
A system that values human lives over robot/AI replacing humans would be nice
I think it’s good to have a balance in life , inspire kids to actually get a trade along with skateboarding, they ain’t broke and still doing it instead of living a dead end dream , expecting to get big bucks and what not , that is to say also if you make it as a pro skater .
Get Chase Webb on the show. He is unsponsored and dropping footage literally better than most pros right now.
Didn't he get chased (heh) out of the industry due to sexual assault or something? Might be a reason why people don't want to deal with him despite how talented he is.
@@calvinbaII To my understanding it all derives from a comment Chima Fergusen made on the Bunt which he later recanted when approached by the skaters he accused. I could be wrong but I don't think we have ever heard from a victim or anything beyond word of mouth that spread quickly.
The craziest shift I’ve notice in skateboarding is how if you were a skater and posted anything on TH-cam it was like a cardinal sin, last resort, so frowned upon everyone talked shit on TH-cam skaters. And now theirs so many pros that have TH-cam channels to make money
This reminds me of a saying that I find pretty true, “ if it does not pay the bills it’s not professional.”
now everyone is famous so no one is famous
Skateboarding is going out of business I swear, I’m hoarding the shit out of my 3 pairs of new trucks wheels and bearings
Glad I got 4 new decks in the wall
It’s hilarious listening to broke skateboarders sh!tting on Nyjah for getting his bread claiming some “culture” bullsh!t. It’s nothing more than jealousy and envy.
Everything in California has been skated to death, especially after the 2010's social media era up till now.
The cool part about the 2000's was that before social media took off, it didn't matter how popular a spot was, you could still see something new go down those stairs or rail because not everything was recorded. Now we have HD 4K footage of every crack and sign leading up to the spot, including the water fountain nearby for pete's sake. It really does hurt the mystique of a lot of spots because everyone is just living vicariously through others from the comfort of their own home rather than checking it out themselves. I'll be going back to Japan in a few months and I can't wait because there's still so many untapped spots there and new faces to see. Of course the level of skating has gone up so much that talented kids now would have easily been considered pro in the 90's. So when more people can do an amazing thing naturally there's less money involved. Japan is the only spot I enjoy at the moment.
It's almost like the economy sucks ass. Voting matters, weird.
Skateboarding is a sport and an art-form. Having a job gives you a plan for what you'll do when your body can't compete, and frees you to make the purest art you can. Nothing wrong with being a weekend warrior.
ryan is prime example of almos fumbling the bag and becoming some local bowl skater beacuse of peer pressure good shit
It’s crazy to me with how expensive skateboarding is and most skaters have this situation I have seizures finding work freaking difficult
Pro Decks were $50, average, back 15-20 years ago. Now, they picked up $10+ more. Things just went downhill…
When they played the clip of Tampa it took me back to proper skateboarding. I miss those days. Hate it now.
Homie EVERYONE needs 3 jobs to survive
I got one and doing just fine.
I've been hearing this from many American friends. That's crazy 😸
Nah, one job and your set.
In Europe one job is enough. That is why I would move to the USA.
im a line cook at a shitty corporate steakhouse and do just fine with only that job ... just gotta make sure your putting in at least 40 hours a week .. now if you made a buncha shitty decisions during your younger years like having multiple kids with the wrong people... i get having 3 jobs ... iv seen that plenty too
Before the current internet realm, making media had money in it too. Good skateboarding footage always had an allure to it, especially street skating. Those special days are sadly over as social media lumps all content together as one form of entertainment for most people.
Like with everything , only the top 10% get the big money
more like the top 1% actually
@ ya definitely i just think that also the top 10% still makes good money just not millions
People out there fully believe everyone on Nike’s roster make bank. lol the bottom tier pros are lucky to get their box on time
Really? Because before nike came in and every pro sold out. You could make good money just being sponsored by a bolts company.
What’s selling out ? They gotta eat some how
Chris Robert’s is a legendary skater
Skateboarding is being carved from the inside out by the venture capitalists and mega-corporations, meanwhile these kids put their bones on the line for their dream.
Let's just hope once these CEOs finish picking the bones there's something left.
Vote republican, bring the cost of living down
Too little too late
That’s kinda fucked, I always thought they’d atleast making a living wage. But having to skate plus other jobs, even after you’ve put in all that work to get sponsored level good, kinda glad I stuck to my education
Since the late 90s skateboarding culture did everything it could to kill rollerblading. No pros could make money, and there was no mainstream exposure. Now that there is a decrease in popularity, I hope skateboarding can feel what it’s like to be beaten down.
let it go bro...
@@WhereThereDude even if he lets it go, I do think the skate industry is reaping what it's sown in many ways
I feel as though most action sports athletes are underpaid for their talent. Getting rich from it is pretty rare. Although the feeling of being really good at anything is something that money can't buy.
Facts, until you’re starving and cold… then money can buy it pretty quick
They aren't underpaid. There's no money. Nobody fucking cares about skateboarding outside of skateboarders and how many are there? It's a childs sport. Children don't have money. Their parents have money. Their parents get sick of footing the bill and the child moves onto more productive things like getting a real job.
Its a bummer for sure. I remember hearing the industry say there was no money in skateboarding back in 2010
“I heard you paint houses…”
Skateboarding is not as cool anymore, simple as that... That's how 'pro' athletes from less popular sports always felt.

lol if skaters have it this way don’t ask about how BMX riders are living
There’s no such thing as a sellout. Everyone’s got a price. But regardless, you only have one life to live and if a global branded company was willing to pay me to skate and rep their shit, so be it. I’d ride for Pepsi I don’t give a fuck
I remember that being a sell-out was really a bad thing. Now, with adult eyes, it isn’t a bad thing.

"life Insurance/Finance" means PYRAMID SCHEME 🤣
now of days it is truly up to you
It’s awesome that it’s so accessible and everybody is super good at it and people aren’t getting the attention they really should. That just makes people create new things to do. Skateboarding has been around too long. Nothing news come out. Let’s get up in the sky. come skydiving with me
