great video! i would suggest pressure testing the system with nitrogen prior to vacuuming the system down. you can hold a vacuum but still have a leak when it is under pressure.
So far every system I've done on vintage air, I just put 2 cans and they all work amazing. Drove my 69 camaro from baton rouge to Miami setup like that and worked like a modern car the entire time. Even had to turn it on the lowest setting cause got so cold in the car haha. On 90+ degree days mind you.
I'm way proud of you. Bless you and yours. Don't stop at my house in Alaska. Only because I'm awkward. Or bring a keg, we'll be fine. Smiley face emoji
I have the same system in my 85 silverado It would freeze you out for 30 min or so then stop cooling . its the little multi switch next to the passenger side headlight area i jusy hot wired the compressor so i can turn it on and off with a switch on the dash cause it wont cycle on and off on its own for some reason. I keep a thermometer in the vent and i cut it off when it gets too cold. when its hot out i can leave it on almost all the time but in the spring i have to turn it off and on a lot. I know thats not the right way to fix it but it keeps me cool. The condensor on these systems is a dual flow dual pass type so it does the same job in less space thats why its so smaller than the original. If it cools really good at initial start up it should continue to cool at the same performance rate . be sure the fan schroud is in good shape and fan clutch is operating properly
I just got through putting the Gen 5 system in my '56 F100. So far it's doing a great job. It's right next to getting in the green zone on my thermometer and it's Great. I don't think that I could stand it any cooler.
We had a similar problem in a Falcon wagon with a 331 stroker and an AOD. Ended up changing the trans cooler out with Derale remote unit with a fan. Problem solved.
I think the kit from LMC truck might be better? But you’re definitely spot on with the pressures. You definitely need to check your low side and high side pressures especially on a hot day. It also depends on when you installed it. If you installed during the winter time your low and high side pressures will change.
I called vintage air after watching this video this weekend . I guess I’m nervous because I just spent a lot of money on this system for my truck . It’s not here yet so I asked them what’s up with that . Dude assured me it would be fine . I hope so .
The symptoms you described at the beginning of the video may or may not be condenser related - it almost sounds like an evaporator freezing issue, but if that's the case you will notice a drop/absence of airflow out of the vents. I'm curious to see how this worked out now that you are driving in the summer. Happy to share notes if you like; I love AC systems.
My experience wirh AC systems, they dont lose the ability to cool air because the condenser is too small. If it fires up and cools for 20+ minutes, it should be able to continue cooling at that rate, especially sitting still with fans off. Not saying the entire system wont have a failure somewhere, but in ky experience its not the condenser's size if it works on and off for a half hour or more at a time.
You’re not alone, I have cooling issue with my VA in my 67 c10. It seems to do well in town but on a road trip the compressor cycles off way too much. My temps only reach a low of 47 then work their way up to 50 before coming back down. I’ve been chasing this problem for over a year. I’ve taken to three shops hoping they could find something I couldn’t but no luck. One guy is even a VA dealer. What vent temps were you seeing prior to the condenser swap? I will most likely order that oversized condenser and see how it works out for me. Please report back and let us know if you solved your issue. Please add a link to the condenser in your description. Thanks
If this keeps up during the GM Tailgate Tour I'll be doing the same upgrade on my 67. Here's the link to that part! www.summitracing.com/parts/VTA-037030-OVR
Comprerssor isnt running enough ,i had the same problem so i hot wired the compressor so i could control it and it will freeze you out, try it temporarily but be sure you have enough refrigerant. i keep a thermometer in one of my vents, when it gets below 40 degrees i switch off the compressor. i know thats not the right way it should work but ive been doing this for 10 years ,you just have to regulate it yourself, on a hot day i can leave it on all the time if im just driving up to Lowes or Wal mart about 5 miles away
@@jbncnow I like this idea. do you cycle it yourself to avoid freezing up the evaporator? Or do you just allow it to stay engaged? I live in south Texas where it’s summer year round así perhaps there would be no need to cycle it off. Any tips on wiring it up? Thanks
I use Classic Auto Air because of some of the issues that you mentioned. Everyone just goes with Vintage Air first and there are other options out there.
Your so right I've never even heard someone use another company when putting air back into a build I wonder if tracking down all the stock AC stuff would be possible an how much money would it be
How has the Classic Auto Air system performed? I really wanted to try Restomod Air when I did my C10 but Vintage Air sponsored that build with Street Trucks so I couldn't turn that down!
Let’s just throw parts at it. That sounds like a great idea. Have you ever gauged up well running down the road? Probably not. I suggest you also get a PT chart.
Looks like you’ve figured out my style! Hope you watch future videos where I throw parts at other vehicles 🤙 Maybe you could cry about those too and help my video algorithm?
I just got back into watching your channel regularly I love your road trips an the line of trucks you have but my boy you gotta stop using that crescent wrench I know you're using it just cause you don't want to have to switch out tools if you don't have a rolling tool kart get one it was painful watching you take off the AC lines with the crescent wrench but keep making killer videos bro
You could but the factory drier is mounted on the firewall and the way the hard lines come off the factory condenser would make it a little tricky to mount the drier in the grille.
Old style tube and fin condensers do not dissipate nearly as much heat as newer parallel flow condensers. R134a runs at a higher pressure, requiring a more efficient condenser than a system using R12 refrigerant, and as a result tube and fin condensers do not work well with R134a. I didn't watch the whole video, but I did notice he had the can upside down while charging. Don't do that. You would be charging as a liquid, and as we all know, compressors do not compress liquids. You got lucky you didn't damage your compressor.
I bought their surefit system for my 91 Camaro. Didnt have any issues with it... works great and was easy to install. Damn good quality

Great suggestion! That might be another AC tool I need to add.

I hear the gen 5 stuff fixed a lot of these issues. I want to try one of them in the next build

On my 2000 379 Pete, the ac was bolted right to the cac and wore a hole in it. So I sugges a small space

Did you get the new gen 5 unit? If so they addressed this issue and have improved the system significantly.

I lived in Miami for 5 months around 1999. I got home sick.
May not keep you cool in summer, but sure as hell looks cool 👍 here’s naive me, thinking with all that room you could fit any AC system in there!

Nice job on the install. Did you change the bulkhead on the firewall?
Makes me miss my old k5s. 😢 solid video. Kinda glad I stayed away from AC stuff in my c10, I don't want to many fancy amenities 😂

Good looking blazer. I seen it in Nashville at GMTT today. How'd it perform on thectrip from FL
try they were made for r12 sys you need to put r 690 freon in it
I had this problem untill l went to a large straight drive flex fan not the electric ones
I worked at Bike Tech as a mechanic. Good and bad moments

What condenser is this?
Vintage Air makes a superflow monster condenser. I got mine off Summit Racing. www.summitracing.com/parts/VTA-037030-OVR
Real ac manufacturers size their equipment and things have to match. They need the right capacity condensor no matter what size car they make it for.
You would think you’d be able to use a factory condenser
You could but the factory drier is mounted on the firewall and the way the hard lines come off the factory condenser would make it a little tricky to mount the drier in the grille.
