I pretty much went through the same experience in catholic school in Brooklyn with my Italian dad.A priest beat me up pretty bad for writing a curse word on a girls book.I was 12 years old and he beat me like he would a grown man.The priest than called my home and screamed at my mom and said some stuff that was very uncalled for.When my mom called my Dad at work he immediately came to the school and came and got me in the general office.He then found the priest in the cafeteria and grabbed him by the throat,and then asked him how he liked to be hit by someone bigger and tougher.My dad was no criminal but he was a tough as nails man that protected his family.
So the reason some of the schools were open on the 13th of September was basically 2 fold. Adults were so upset and being a parent to smaller kids who couldn't really grasp why their parents were upset were sent to school so their parents could " lock the emotional reality down a bit" to not traumatize even further their young kids. Gave parents a time to regroup. The 2nd reason was to show the kids that everything was going to be ok while also letting them be with kids their age so they could go through it together.

He does a podcast with Sal Vulcano that’s hilarious. Speaking of, Sal’s standup called “Possible Terrorism” is one of the most hysterical stories I’ve heard. Well worth a watch. It’s up there with “The Machine” for me.

Just rumors of bombs at the world trade center and kids getting pulled out of class, and teachers crying. It wasn't until we saw fighter jets flying overhead and everyone's parents were home (not normal for us) that we knew something was up.

I was ALSO in my 8th grade Language Arts class when the towers went down. I grew up in DC, and we actually had kids whose parents worked at the Pentagon and it was a similar super rough vibe to what he's describing here. If someone had laughed at somebody for thinking that they lost a parent and then that person turned and attacked them, I am 100% on team "detention." Like, I don't condone violence, but it's fuckin 9/11. NOBODY was acting rationally during that shit and everybody was flipping out. Some level of understanding needs to be extended, especially to kids who've suddenly learned that their parents might not be coming home
He has other great stories about his dad kicking a guy's ass for dissing Chris' mom (long after they were divorced) and sneaking him into field-level seats at Yankee Stadium.
