    Good one Marty. As a guitar teacher my main quick tip for students who found playing something over a Happy chord progression difficult has always been.. PLAY THE PENTATONIC SHAPE - 3 FRETS DOWN from the root of your home chord. No shapes, because that's called MODES. just the pentatonic. Instant country, instant paradise city, instant Knockin on heavens door! As someone who learnt guitar during the late 70s metal revival I appreciate that cissy, soft, happy gets ignored!

Hearing you sing them out while you plucked the string really opened up the fretboard for me! Thanks for that! Coolest thing is when it comes to playing over the major scale and it doesn't matter what key you're in it applies in any key..... if you move your root note on the low E string down three frets, you're then in position one of your relative minor scale. So for example if you're playing in C major as Marty is here, move your C on the low E string down three frets to the A note and boom, there's your relative minor, the A minor scale =P
    Long story short is if you're practicing over a jam track you're not restricted to playing just the major scale you can also use the relative minor. And why is this? it's because the relative minor of a key uses the SAME NOTES as it's respective major =P This is something I'd recommend everybody seriously look into and learn because it's one thing that truly blew the fretboard wide open for me as a developing player.
    Marty if you're reading this, I'd love to see you do a video to really show first hand what I'm talking about here =) You could kind of do that as an extension to this video if you wanted to =P I know you got probably 50 thousand other videos already lined up in your schedule to do but yeah just a thought man... Rock on!

    You said with the root on Low E but played C major beginning on the 8th fret. Low E wasn't even part of the scale. You'll only confuse beginners this way. E is the third degree of c major no matter what. If you begin and end Cmajor on E you will have phrygian mode. By the way......Am is always the relative minor of c major. No matter what key you are in you can always find the relative minor by going down a full step and a half.

    • @beck204
      @beck204 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m a beginner and this was not confusing at all. He was just referring to which string to start on, the low E as opposed to the high E. The 8th fret on the on the low E is C, so it all made perfect sense. I don’t think the E note had anything to do with this lesson. He was just helping people find their starting place. Just a hunch here, but I’m guessing you’re quite an advanced guitar player.

    • @garychen483
      @garychen483 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Low E is not a note but the thickest string.
      He said with the root on the Low E (string) and he played C major beginning on the 8th fret (of the Low E string), which he did nothing wrong.
      “Low E wasn’t even part of the scale.” This sentence doesn’t make any sense. Lol.
      There’re many notes on the Low E string that are part of the C major scale. I hope you’re not confused anymore.

    Marty I just got a looper pedal from mrs. clause. this is exactly why I got it- to expand my skills- got rhythm down pat, need that solo ability and this video was super awesome to get me started! Thanks my man. been watching you for many years. in fact- I owe my fan favorite (around the campfire) piano man cover to your lesson! cheers my man happy new year!

    Marty with his ES 335 gift.... nice, I got one my dad gave me from 1981.... I believe on your video from the Gibson plant every ES 335 was made from the same press. Interesting!

    That was so brilliant, from the original A C D G E F Chords and the Blues and the lessons I have followed, this brings so much more together in my understanding of sweet, sweet Music. Thank you ever so much for your easy to follow lessons. Best ever progression in my mind from the past 2 years of learning.
