I swap around, but Steve legit is my "breakthrough" guy. If I'm ever stumped, I check out Steve's stuff first and his simple way of putting things, and almost forcing complicated things to sound simple works wonders for me.

Indeed! I’m a working musician I’ve done multiple albums and tours and I’ve never come across a teacher who made it seem so accessible and down-to-earth. This teaching method is gold! I’ve played and worked with so many MI guys who are wonderful and try to teach me but they get frustrated with me and my incredibly slow tactile learning way. But I learn more with this guy in two weeks than I have been on the road with MI guys whose brains and methods of learning theory just escape me. Not that Steves teaching is too basic. It’s just that his teaching method is truly elementary.

Yes this sort of instruction is what is missing in so many classes and courses. I have played on and off for decades and NEVER did any instructor take the time to even recommend basic theory. My first instructor jumped right into strumming Dust in the Wind and never bothered with telling me why the chords were formed the way they are nor why those chords were a progression. Next instructor did the same but with the Beatles. I wound up quitting several times. This foundation is what keeps me in the game.
@@allenarmour2544 Move to the 1st (or 13th) fret on the lower E string and repeat the same pattern. That is sort of the point of the video, no?
Learners nowadays are so lucky to have access to this level of quality tuition. I wish I could turn back time.

I never got into playing lead because i thought i had to memorize 637 scales. You just cleared up a bunch of stuff. I played classical music on saxophone and knew all kinds of theory, but never knew about what you explained in this video. You are a great teacher. Very thorough. Thank you
I've been a Bass and Guitar teacher for 26 years. I like instructional videos mostly for different teaching methods. The arrow at 3-4 and 7-8 has made my teaching method so much more understanding. For the rest of you watching, here is proof that there is always something to be learned and it doesn't matter who has the information you receive, just that you receive it.

They taught us 3-4 7-8 for major and 2-3 5-6 for minor in 6th grade at school…
Dear Steve ... I just wanted to compliment you as a guitar teacher. I am an advanced player/theorist but I'm also a guitar junkie ... in other words, I am what the world needs, another damned guitar player! I started watching all the different guitar teachers on TH-cam and even though I already 'knew' 99% of what was being taught I got interested in the various approaches that were used to teaching various elements of theory as applied to the guitar fret board. If TH-cam had been around when I started to learn guitar, I'd've been a rockstar and dead along time ago ... lol. I stand on the shoulders of giants on most things I 'know', and in the case of guitar and guitar theory, I was taught by one of the best teachers on the planet in the 1980's down in New Orleans, by the great Hank Mackie.
I was watching various 'teachers' on TH-cam explaining modes and most of them just seemed to confuse the issue which reminded me of Hank Mackie's first lesson when I eventually got pointed to him by better players than I was back then. I had about every issue of Guitar Player Magazine and I struggled quite often to understand the lessons in the back ... and in particular, at that point in my playing life, what was confusing me was modes and so I had a bunch of vague questions for Hank ... he just said to me, 'Forget all of that man! There's the Major scale, the Pentatonic scale, and maybe a jazz minor, a gypsy minor etc. but that's it. .... all of the modes being just a different starting tonic note in the major scale ... 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc' ... which cleared up a whole bunch of stuff immediately. ... So when I got to you on TH-cam when I was watching the confused teaching on modes, that was exactly your approach so I took to you right away. And all the other stuff you teach have that same clear quality to them ... very good man! I pick up stuff from you all the time just because I'm an old retired rock star and am always playing guitar now that I have the time ... (I was an audio engineer for 40 plus years and rarely got to play much because I was recording others etc. I built 3 studios in that time span and so I was really an 'engineer' ... the last one was damned near perfect ... made me smile just walking in ... eventually I didn't even have to check my mixes in the car, on boom boxes because I was so confident of the control room I designed being 'the truth' in what I was hearing).
Anyway ... sorry ... I'm just waffling ... but I wanted to tell you how much I appreciated your clear, friendly style of teaching ... (I've actually started practicing your lessons on 'speed picking' which is not something I really concentrated on because I'm not a 'shredder') ... I always tell any kid I'm teaching what Hank Mackie taught me and what you mentioned during the beginning lesson ... 'Slow down, the speed will come on its own'.
Really humans can only really concentrate for about 15 minutes maximum so for technique I tell people that ... spend 10 to 15 minutes a day, (usually when you're fresh in the morning), SLOWLY practicing (whatever technique or style you're trying to learn), and making sure your technique is right ... thumb center back, finger per fret etc. and do it as slowly as you can ... 10 to 15 minutes a day, then forget about it and have fun .... amazing ... all things being equal, anyone is just 30 days away from being competent in anything ... not just guitar licks, techniques or styles ...

I studied theory in High School and it went right over my head, I’ve been playing guitar in many bands for the last 35 yrs....always memorizing “shapes” . You’re style of teaching is so down to earth and makes so much sense.... but I do know that is due to your own thorough understanding of music and knowing how to simplify these concepts.

They must have given you a horrible teacher because when I took it in college as a drummer/singer/etc...it was an extremely easy A. Most teachers are really ineffective. I quit about...85% of the time because the teachers are "useless as t*ts on a bull," as gramps used to say.
If only I had access to videos like this when I started playing in the early 90s. Ive never seen such an easy way to learn this stuff and its free! You're a natural at teaching, and playing, Steve. Excellent work brother.

Steve, you are a terrific teacher. I was a trial lawyer and law professor for many years and whether you're teaching a jury or a class, the key is putting yourself in the shoes of the juror or student. Too many TH-cam "teachers" are good players but not good teachers because they assume too much of the student's knowledge. You take it step by step and in 'bite size pieces" so the student isn't overwhelmed. I've played a lot of instruments over a lot of years but there's always something new to learn and you are my "go to" guitar guy. My "go to" keyboard guy is Piano Pig. He's worth checking out even if you don't play keyboard because his teaching style is much like yours. I've been sponging off your free lessons but I'm signing up for the paid version. Yeah, never do that. ALWAYS pay a great teacher what they are worth. You're actualling saving a lot of time and the money is well worth it. They'll stop you from stupid mistakes. Most "teachers" aren't that great. I quit almost all of them immediately. That includes private lessons and a LOT of college stuff.
You should be getting music theory as you go along so if you take a basic college theory class, it'll be ridiculously easy.

I have been fixing and customizing guitars for several years now and as i get closer to the age of 50, I have become more frustrated with trying to get over the learning hump and understanding how to play. I love the classic rock style and even some of the new stuff but only could play some of the riffs and just bits and pieces. You have certainly opened my eyes since the first two videos. Who would guess that the boring days of sitting in choir class, back in grade school, would have any meaning to me now. You do a great job in explaining the theory....I so look forward to continuing to watch and learn. Thank You!

Thanks Steve for helping me get this and actually use it. I'm 56 years old and played in band in my youth and had this stuff thrown at me in a classroom. I decided to play drums to dodge all of the confusion. I regret it now, it has been 30 years sinceI thought about scales and such. I decided to by a guitar and suck it up and learn this before I can not do it physically. Your teaching is crystal clear and makes me want to embrace it and learn more. You have a gift and I for one am glad you have decided to share it with everyone.

I major in drums. I started on guitar. They are all hard for their own reasons.
But have a look at drumline 1 and 2, Gene Krupa Story or Whiplash if you think drumming avoids all the confusion. Lol. Have a look at John Bonham sheet music. :)

I've been an on and off guitar player for 10 years, but never took the time to actually learn any music because I bought into the whole idea that a lot of the greatest guitarists don't know how to read music. Getting to understand the instrument and know why I'm doing the things I'm doing instead of just aping what I've seen other people play has made me a better player in a few weeks for sure, not to mention how it has encouraged me to actually play. If that C major scale works across all the notes then why is there an A major, B major, D major scale etc? Wouldn’t it just be the same shape for every scale? But if I play a B major scale it’s a totally different shape. 😐
EDIT: I found the answer, for anyone who had the same question here’s the reason: Put simply as I can, there’s a difference between playing let’s say a G major scale, and playing in the key of G. The scale is just playing the Do-Re-Mi scale (Major scale shape) from the “G” root note, while the “Key of G” is it’s own separate scale that is used to build chords from. in other words, if you just want to play the Do-Re-Mi note progression with G as the first note (root note) then you just play the major scale shape with g as the root note, which can be done from any root note, the shape applies to them all. However, if you actually want to play the true G major scale, it’s a separate shape, that again, is used to play chords from. That’s not really something you should worry about as a beginner but if you’re like me you want to know the reason why there’s two different scales for each letter note and that’s the reason why.

I think Steve Stine is simply an AMAZING Teacher. These Tutorials he makes create an uncanny & remarkable feeling of having a Private Session. Not sure if its his Tone of Voice and overall Choice of words but he seems to genuinely care if the person watching understands what he's teaching. And I do ! So great.
