I don't think Edu needs to be criticized when it comes to Biereth sales(and other youth as well). Those who should be criticized may well be the youth department who made Biereth contract remain 1 year at a crucial stage. If he had 2 years left, Arsenal might well have made a better fee off him or sent him on loan to a higher level and increased his value. I think it's a good sale overall because it's like Sturm Graz record signing fee isn't it? I don't exactly know how things work in the youth area but we need to give them better contract and show them even though they might not make it into the Arsenal 1st team, they might get a better chance at other clubs using their Arsenal youth career(similar to Mancity and Chelsea). Better loan moves and contracts should be the first thing that needs to be improved. It's not like ranting we should give every youth a chance and promote them to the 1st team. Like Chelsea or Mancity does, give them some dummy playtime(5min) in the 1st team and increase their value to make profits.
We only signed him from Fulham in 2021 (I think for free as Arsenal gave him his 1st professional contract) so difficult to have got him to sign for longer. The 4m therefore will be pure profit (minus his wage costs over 3 years). He was a good signing as doing this type of deal is part of what the youth setup is for.
Charles it seems to me the unspoken bit of the potential Calafiori deal is Zinchenko's contract situation. He has 2 years left. It's hard to see him signing another deal at this point - it seems to me he was a bit frustrated not to play more at times last season. I think Mikel is moving towards a physical prototype that Zinny doesn't fit. Kiwior does fit that prototype, offers more positional flexibility and has longer left on his contract. I know Mikel rates him as a footballer, and rightly so. But is he the defender they'd ideally like to move on from, rather than Kiwior?
Hi Charles, I think Calafiori's potential transfer further strengthens the view that Arteta is moving towards starting with x4 ball playing CBs (like Man City does). The most interesting implication is that it would allow Arsenal to go for more forward thinking midfielders as you have x4 very reliable defenders plus Declan Rice. One could either play x2 number eights or go for a go for a defensive midfielder who's best attribute is ball progression and not necessarily protecting the back four or breaking up play (similar to Jorginho). Finally, there is absolutely zero chance we consider selling Gabriel. We literally have the best CB partnership on this planet and it would also disrupt Saliba. Probably spells the end for Kiwior (even if on loan) and Zinchenko (unless moved into midfield) with Tierney being reintegrated due to his injury record.

Being an Austrian I can confirm that 4 mil is a decent sum for the Austrian Bundesliga - I think thats the most a club apart from RB Salzburg has every paid for a player ... And its not much less than Salzburg paid for a certain Erling Haaland back in the day ... Plus: it wasnt like Biereth tore the Austrian Bundesliga apart, he did well and contributed to Sturm's title win but he wasnt their best player or sth

Don't think Arsenal will sell Big Gabby (now). However, it's not lost on me that he's 27 & Calafiori is Saliba's age. In two years, if/when Calafiori has developed into an elite CB & SA come in with a good offer for a 29 yr old Gabby M.... THAT is the time to sell. That's incredibly smart succession planning and I'd wager this is some part of Arsenal's thinking. He can begin his career as LB in bigger comps and LCB rotation for domestic cups.
Hi, thanks for the good updates, as always! Do you reckon us (potentially) getting Calafiori means we're looking to play Timber as a DM? Frankly we're quite stocked in LB with Tomi, Zinny, Jakub and Jurrien while none of them is really a LB at heart... But even in that case, I would've been happy to go into next season with Timber as a LB (hoping that he has managed to recover well from his injury). Anyways, the question still remains, it seems a bit weird for us to go for a LB, when we really already have 4 very good options for that position. There is a bit of a case of the abilities that one would look for in a LB are a somewhat divided upon all those four and Calafiori would seem to combine a bunch of them into one. There is also a case to be made for Zinchencko playing as a DM (or a left sided 8), which I would personally like quite a lot, but quite confusingly Arteta doesn't seem to lean towards this at all. Likely due to the fact that Arteta likes his DM's (along with the rest of the defensive 5) with a bit more physicality. But I'd still like Zinny to stay, and perhaps moulding him back into a left 8 role could actually be great, I bet Martinelli would benefit greatly from that. After writing this down, I actually got a bit surprised at seeing how many internal options we have to solve our 'slight' DM problems. Don't think we're really in need of getting a DM at all, but there are plenty of options in upgrading other positions, which could allow us to allocate different players to the required midfield roles.

Chelsea has no chance of signing Calafiori. They have ruined their reputation, and players will start seriously questioning joining their project. Italian players are passionate, and we all know that Arteta exudes passion, respect, and competence. We now have a club that is respected, with a manager that players are eager to play under. Arteta is our X factor and has the ability to attract players to our side, even if it means turning down a slightly higher salary.
Unless we're getting a world record fee for a defender, plus add ons onto that fee he ain't leaving. It's stupid to lose him now after building that partnership with Saliba

Can't agree more... two symptoms other arsenal players exhibit too.. despite scoring many, these shots/headers that went straight to keepers costed us in key games eg Trossard (who's the lethal one lol) shot straight at Martinez from 3😮 yards with an open goal and he knew it.... would have helped win over the sticky Villa (vs a loss)

Not that disappointed by Bierith transfer fee tbh. Money outside of top leagues can be tight and having big sell on clause can prove to be a better deal long term. It's nothing compared to 1 mil for Holding, Pepe on a free etc. Maybe it could have been a little more but not something I would bring up as an example of Arsenal not being good sellers.

Man really said Granit Xhaka is one of the best midfielders in the tournament 😂. Struggled in the premier for over 5 seasons playing at 6 because he didn’t have the awareness or ability to deal with when pressed by high pressing teams, most errors that lead to goals. Moves into 8 where high press teams don’t press and looks like a decent player, why? Because he had more time and space on the ball because high press teams don’t press that area. Any player would look better in that situation. Goes back to Germany and plays at 6 again and does better, why? Because the overall standard and the intensity of the Bundesliga is not like the Prem. Looks ok playing in an organised Swiss side, why? Because international football is played at a much slower tempo and again no high pressing teams. He’s a bang average player, games are won and lost in midfield especially the number 6 position, look at city without Rodri, look at united last season because Casemiro fell off it, and when Xhaka was arsenal main man in there the club went backwards. It took a player like Partey to come in and cover him before the club started moving forward again.

They’ve signed Veiga from Basel instead. Contrary to the strong sentiment in our fanbase, we objectively are not ‘bad at selling’ - we’ve just not had good players to sell. If you go back and compare transfermarkt values in tandem with wages vs sale price you’ll see that we don’t sell players at more of a discount than City (Laporte, Zinchenko, Palmer, Gundogan), Chelsea (loads of players) and other clubs have. We just don’t have the same turnover and are more comparable with clubs that have been out of the CL more recently like Spurs in recent years. You’ll note going forward that turnover will be higher More subjective but we paid decent money for Kiwior but it’s naive to think that him performing to the level expected (noones calling him a steal), being on bigger wages and now 2 years older should warrant an uptick in his value. That has happened rightfully to our starters (basically all of them) but not our rotational players ie Trossard, Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Tomi etc.

Yes there are certain tactics to help reduce and increase the prices, but sale prices conform to market values considering wages. I think we need to look at what Arteta did with the keepers out of the blue. Gabriel is not comfortable on the ball and that is a huge part of Arteta's footballing ideology. In two years, if/when Calafiori has developed into an elite CB & SA come in with a good offer for a 29 yr old Gabby M.... THAT is the time to sell. That's incredibly smart succession planning and I'd wager this is some part of Arsenal's thinking. He can begin his career as LB in bigger comps and LCB rotation for domestic cups.
Chelsea are not going in for him as they’ve just signed their backup option who was coincidentally Califiori’s replacement at Basel.

Do you reckon us (potentially) getting Calafiori means we're looking to play Timber as a DM? Frankly we're quite stocked in LB with Tomi, Zinny, Jakub and Jurrien while none of them is really a LB at heart... But even in that case, I would've been happy to go into next season with Timber as a LB (hoping that he has managed to recover well from his injury). Anyways, the question still remains, it seems a bit weird for us to go for a LB, when we really already have 4 very good options for that position. There is a bit of a case of the abilities that one would look for in a LB are a somewhat divided upon all those four and Calafiori would seem to combine a bunch of them into one.
There is also a case to be made for Zinchencko playing as a DM (or a left sided 8), which I would personally like quite a lot, but quite confusingly Arteta doesn't seem to lean towards this at all. Likely due to the fact that Arteta likes his DM's (along with the rest of the defensive 5) with a bit more physicality. But I'd still like Zinny to stay, and perhaps moulding him back into a left 8 role could actually be great, I bet Martinelli would benefit greatly from that.
After writing this down, I actually got a bit surprised at seeing how many internal options we have to solve our 'slight' DM problems. Don't think we're really in need of getting a DM at all, but there are plenty of options in upgrading other positions, which could allow us to allocate different players to the required midfield roles.

Chelsea has no chance of signing Calafiori. They have ruined their reputation, and players will start seriously questioning joining their project. Italian players are passionate, and we all know that Arteta exudes passion, respect, and competence. We now have a club that is respected, with a manager that players are eager to play under.
Arteta is our X factor and has the ability to attract players to our side, even if it means turning down a slightly higher salary.
Unless we're getting a world record fee for a defender, plus add ons onto that fee he ain't leaving. It's stupid to lose him now after building that partnership with Saliba

I think Ben White will hold on to that right back spot so where does Timber play? I get that it's great to have options on the bench but isn't Timber too good to be a back up?

Don’t want to hear any talk about selling Gabriel. He’s one of the best center backs in the world and his partnership is crucial for Saliba’s success as well. It’s very likely that we’ll lose Saliba to one of the mega clubs in the next couple years and it would be catastrophic if we wake up in a year or two and suddenly we have neither of them. Is Saliba’s future something the club would take into account when entertaining offers for Gabriel? I have watched too many minutes of Mustafi and Lichtsteiner to watch our beautiful defense get sold away to Madrid and Saudi Arabia

Havertz missing chances is normal. He had a free header dollies it straight at keeper and a clear shot from 16 yards. Dollies it again. He needs to put conviction in his finishing.

Not that disappointed by Bierith transfer fee tbh. Money outside of top leagues can be tight and having big sell on clause can prove to be a better deal long term. I don't understand the comment about needing a new right sided defender. We already have four right sided defenders. White, Saliba, Timber and Tomiyasu. We will (probably) have four left sided defenders, Gabriel, Kiwior, Calafiori and allegedly, Zinchenko .
Arteta might not play our naturally right sided defenders in their correct positions but they are still able to play there if required.

Man really said Granit Xhaka is one of the best midfielders in the tournament 😂. Struggled in the premier for over 5 seasons playing at 6 because he didn’t have the awareness or ability to deal with when pressed by high pressing teams, most errors that lead to goals. Moves into 8 where high press teams don’t press and looks like a decent player, why? Because he had more time and space on the ball because high press teams don’t press that area. Any player would look better in that situation. Goes back to Germany and plays at 6 again and does better, why? Because the overall standard and the intensity of the Bundesliga is not like the Prem. Looks ok playing in an organised Swiss side, why? Because international football is played at a much slower tempo and again no high pressing teams. He’s a bang average player, games are won and lost in midfield especially the number 6 position, look at city without Rodri, look at united last season because Casemiro fell off it, and when Xhaka was arsenal main man in there the club went backwards. It took a player like Partey to come in and cover him before the club started moving forward again.

Chelsea are no longer in for Calafiori. This has been confirmed by a lot of reputable sources including your own TNAT. They’ve signed Veiga from Basel instead.
Contrary to the strong sentiment in our fanbase, we objectively are not ‘bad at selling’ - we’ve just not had good players to sell. If you go back and compare transfermarkt values in tandem with wages vs sale price you’ll see that we don’t sell players at more of a discount than City (Laporte, Zinchenko, Palmer, Gundogan), Chelsea (loads of players) and other clubs have. We just don’t have the same turnover and are more comparable with clubs that have been out of the CL more recently like Spurs in recent years. You’ll note going forward that turnover will be higher
More subjective but we paid decent money for Kiwior but it’s naive to think that him performing to the level expected (noones calling him a steal), being on bigger wages and now 2 years older should warrant an uptick in his value. That has happened rightfully to our starters (basically all of them) but not our rotational players ie Trossard, Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Tomi etc.

Yes there are certain tactics to help reduce and increase the prices, but sale prices conform to market values considering wages. Our transfer history isn’t an outlier in that sense, we’ve just had worse, older players the last 10 years and sold them for low fees before their contracts expire.

I think we need to look at what Arteta did with the keepers out of the blue. Gabriel is not comfortable on the ball and that is a huge part of Arteta's footballing ideology. A big offer and with Calafiori signed, keeping Kiwior and Tomi and i think we are good. Keeping Gabriel risks him losing value if Calafiori takes his spot at CH with Timber at RB. A ball playing back 4 not bettered in the EPL.
