Wakefield is hell on earth for anyone who cannot afford to live in the countryside, the countryside in wakefield is stunning, but the places that require a council to operate it are disgusting to say the least, ost of the newer buildings are empty or nothing more than council buildings for council staff, the new shopping centre only drew business away from other areas of the town instead of adding, leaving plenty of empty buildings to be vandalised and used by homeless and drug addicts, which are very very common, and its not safe for vulnerable people who can expect to be spat on and abused by teen gangs.
@@johnsbox thanks for the response that does not attack me for explaining the reality that many cities like Wakefield suffer, as many others would. Well I’ve lived in Wakefield all my life, I’m 33, For me personally Wakefield is stunning, but the amount of drugs smack zombies everywhere, They’ve closed all the chemists in housing estates so all the addicts end up at boots all day stealing and causing havoc’ The city itself is pretty, it literally takes 5 minutes out of Wakefield city to be surrounded by nature! Jobs are sparse, progression is non existent! And it’s pretty much a lawless state! Like you said 3% conviction rate! We’re constantly failed by services, Trinity walk tore Wakefield into two! The ridings almost collapsed 4 times! But buyers kept investing, now the bottom floor is ruined because the council cannot get planning permission!! We have no community spirit, we have no market, We have hundreds of takeaway, barbers, basically laundering fronts EVERYWHERE!! The drug problem is far beyond a crisis! We have people pretending they are homeless hounding you outside Sainsbury’s, yet they are nowhere to be seen when it lovely and sunny outside! they aren’t there when the weather is crap, which is about 90% years the time! The city itself has tons of potential, but the money just doesn’t hit where it’s needed!
@ it’s the same everywhere in England now, good places, bad places, Like I said Wakefield is stunning, it’s just a majority in the city seek to be at the level of gross suffering nobody wants to see whilst shopping, you can’t even enter Sainsbury’s without getting harassed by so called homeless folk, yet Morrisons and other shopping markets don’t have that issue, you learn to navigate basically
I have been a resident of Wakefield for 30 years, and I don't disagree with anything is this video, it is a shame the crime rate is what it is. The local authority doesn't leave much to be desired either. Great video 👍
@@sglenny001Wakefields spirit left in the 90s. There is no coming back from what the council have done to Wakefield, as I write this response they have only just got control back from the government with social care after systemic failings, it is running in massive debt and most of the new buildings are empty, as are a lot of the shops since trinity walk was built, and of course it relies on West Yorkshire police to keep it safe, and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why that's a bad thing.
Yes I agree a once thriving city, market to be proud of has now turned into empyshops, charity shops, coffeeshops. Lived here most of my life the council need kick up the backside and return it to what it was A proud and functional city. Shame on the council is all I can say.
Regarding the subject of housing in Wakefield Social Housing there is a serious shortage and rents in the private sector have been for many years expensive when compared to places like Barnsley . Wakefield for many years have had a big problem with visible homelessness as well as hidden and the reality is this problem will not be fixed in the near future if at all.
Thanks for your comment. It is always good to get an accurate account of the city from someone who is local, as I assume you are. It's comments such as yours that makes the content more objective.
You are welcome and yes I live local , have done since the 1970s , a point for anyone using the trains at Kirkgate Station might find useful is that it now has no Public Toilets unlike the one before it, also on the subject on Public Transport the Bus Station has always flooded when there is heavy rain since it was rebuilt and re opened on 2001 , and has no information centre now for the public to use.@@johnsbox
I would take Barnsley over Wakefield any day of the week, it actually bothers me that many people I know in Wakefield look down their noses at Barnsley, and although Barnsley has it's issues, the people are much more realistic and honest, and down to earth, and the scenery outside of the town is at worst on par with Wakefield. Barnsley have also made much more of the reinvention of their town centre, without causing issues for existing businesses, they have even managed to preserve their market, which in itself should be embarrassing to Wakefield which is a bigger place and had a much more vibrant and active market culture yet destroyed that popular aspect in the blink of an eye.
Well, I'm focussing on the 10 largest cities for now, but a series on the oldest in future is not out of the question. Thanks for the suggestion. Will bear it in mind!

Correction: the city of Wakefield and the City of Wakefield are not the same. The City of Wakefield (also known as the Metropolitan Borough of Wakefield - both names are in official use) is a district in West Yorkshire and has a population of around 326,000. The Wakefield you are talking about as a separate city has a population of around 110,000. Of course, Wakefield is the capital of the City of Wakefield district. As a district, the City of Wakefield ranks 26th.

One of the things which really spoils Wakefield is the drugs problem. Too many addicts knocking about the place.
You should visit Doncaster if you think Wakefield is bad. Sadly every city has drug problems, some more obvious than others.
@ChangeisComing Yes Doncaster is a bit worse than Wakefield. Not much though.
It is on a par, I live in Donny but a wakey lass, they are both as bad as eachother.

Why I live in Wakefield because Leeds was too expensive and I was offered a job in the council
Respect for your comment! So true.... People choose Wakefield area only because of the costs, not the overall services.
