What Happens To Old Airplanes?

  • Did you know the disposal of old planes is a thriving multibillion dollar business? Or that it’s recently spawned a dangerous shadow market in counterfeit aircraft parts?
    Hop on board and buckle up for takeoff as we ask exactly what happens to old airplanes?
    You might wonder why airplanes need to die in the first place. After all, they’re made of metal, right - can’t they just be maintained, theoretically forever?

      Very unfortunate that the lives lost in this Malaysian
      plane were not treated in par with the lives lost in Titanic Ship! Well, nothing can be done as not even a single minute trace of this aircraft was found even after a 3-year search! Otherwise, they would hv made a much bigger charbuster movie on this too!

    Boeing and Airbus fuselages are designed to flex during pressurization, which causes the lifespan issue. McDonnel Douglas DC-9 and DC-10 series were designed to NOT flex during pressurization, so pressurization cycles do not apply. I worked on a DC-10 that had over 190,000 hours when it was retired.

      Got news for you. All fuselages will flex to some extent depending on the actual design. It is all a matter of degree and where the design stress is located on the S-N curve (stress level versus number of cycles the metal is exposed to). Back to Engineering 101. There sre no absolutes.

    Which begs the question. Are the 787 and soon to be produced 797 a disruptor in this market? They are essentially immortal planes as they have no metal to fatigue. All u need to do is re-engine them and refit them with new interiors and voila a “brand new airplane “.

    • @79Gravity
      @79Gravity 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thats just wrong :) you need the "intire"insides of a plane also, just not the metal.. plane is way more than just metal.. just imagine how well wires run on bare metal.. so :) making a new one is cheaper.. right? immortal is a bad word to even use.. its one of those famous last ones, im "immortal" in my "brand new airplane".. sure you are :D some questions dont need to even be asked.. even if you beg

    The newest B-52H is 60 years old. Some will be over a 100 years old when they are finally retired. So I guess it is possible to keep a plane flying indefinitely if your throw enough refurbishment at it.

    • @PRH123
      @PRH123 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All aluminum aircraft have a known maximum number of takeoff and landing cycles, based on the engineers’ calculations of metal fatigue. I think that for a 747 it’s something like 50,000.
      The highest time airplane of all time is a DC3 with something like 90,000+ flying hours. It’s around 85 years old.
      So an aircraft can’t be used beyond the original design limits.
      Military aircraft actually get very little use. Some types can be retired with as little as 5000-10,000 hours, and it may take them decades to accumulate that much time.

    metal fatigue in the frame titanium structural members will be removed by a slow annealing process in the hot arid climate in Arizona ... Dislocations in the metal will realign and remove stress produced by fatigue. So simply Park the planes for a year in Arizona meanwhile refurbish and put back in service.

      They aren't as fuel efficient as new planes. Also, airlines are getting away from 4-engine aircraft as they're more expensive to operate.

    Same with old wind turbines. Can't be recycled. Off to landfill.

    Can this material recycled &used in low budget plane making?!?

      There's no such thing as low budget aircraft construction but nearly all the materials are recycled.

    I think a lot of airplane enthusiasts would love the cockpit to be sold.

    Lets use these vast resources to house the homeless from around the nation. Talk to your congressman and plant this seed idea. They already come with equipment that still works onboard to make power. Solar panels and gardens can be introduced to ensure longevity.

    How they can recycle the old plane to make env better and greener

      Metal is reusable and melts and takes shape.
      It’s like old concrete cracking. So it tunes into dirt and becomes new source for better concrete.

    how about melting this aircraft and turn into construction materials and equipment like metal bars or a hammer. with that, a faster recycling method can be used.

    The word is AEROPLANE, not "airplane".
    My information is from THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY, published by Oxford University Press. Currently running at 20 large volumes, it is the most comprehensive, universally respected and authoritative English Dictionary in the world.

    Why those aircrafts are not sent to be recycled similar to recycling cars.
    To get maximum benefits of re-using plenty of scrap metals a Aluminium. Iron..copper..etc .and to get ride of occupying those large spaces and yards needed to park them.

    Passenger aircraft are too expensive that they can simply be scrapped like an old washing machine. Of course there is a big question about what could be done with the planes.
