  • In our exploration of the history of Calrec's Nutclough Mill HQ and the town of Hebden Bridge, we've reached the 1960s.
    It was a sad time.
The UK clothing industry had begun to import cheaper textiles from the East. One by one, the mills were shut down. Then they were vandalised and gutted by fire. The rivers were in a bad way, poisoned by years of industrial pollution. People were fleeing South in search of work. The town was in terminal decline.
In the mid-Sixties, a group of residents set to work to help make Hebden Bridge a decent place to live again and to restore some civic pride. They began to restore some of the town's most important historic buildings, clear up the rubbish, and clean the rivers. It was the dawn of a new era in the town's fortunes.

Some context would be helpful. For example the photograph at 2:57 of a field full of beatniks lying down. When was this and where was this photo taken. Would be good to know if it actually does have any provenance to actually connect it to Hebden Bridge or is it just a library photo tossed in to the mix. The reason that I ask is because it does not awake any memories of actual events that I have witnessed of this ilk. Would not have wanted to have missed this one. The first event of a vaguely similar kind that I am aware of happening in Hebden Bridge was the 1968 Arts Festival organised by Albert Hunt and friends.

Nice video....BUT....did you not manage to buy this mill (or was it Linden mill) for £1 while you were on the board of Pennine Heritage.....They still call you Fletch the Letch . I ve met two people who claim they are your genetic cast off's. Tell em about the masonry and fraud David . You used to be so respected by many of us 'old' locals.
