The Action 3 footage looked much more properly exposed in Every shot and the Action 4 footage looked Really Underexposed by 1-2 stops on Every Clip. Was Surprised. Never buying another DJI product after Osmo Action 3 blurry focus issue, DJI lied and stayed silent, its still bad even after update, you can still see the out of focus issue in this comparison. I don't trust them anymore. If anything they should compensate people that got burnt on Action 3, with a Action 4 discount.

      There wasn't a blurry focus issue, I'm pretty sure people were just holding it within minimum focusing distance. Action cameras do not have focus motors or moving lenses, they can't focus. Their lenses are fixed at infinity focus and glued in place. Check the background of any of those reviewers who said they had issues, they're all super sharp like a chinese smartphone.

      Agreed, I own ALL the Action and Pocket Products and have fully filed them in the [virtual] trash for the 4 GB File split. And I had to watch 100+ reviews to see iPhonedo answer that on video 101. A TRUE deal breaker. I am hoping iPhonedo can get an answer from DJI if they will firmware update Action 3 for 16 GB limit. Or, if they say now, if he can MAKE them update firmware for their loyal customers like us. But, LESS loyal now, until DJI steps to the plate with this CRITICAL Action 3 Firmware update. - Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed Vloggers ]

      @@pcislocked DJI action 4 proves that they CAN and SHOULD fix 4gb file size splits. Otherwise they would not have done the work to make the Action 4 split at 16gb (acceptable split size). But I can NOT forgive or forget that DJI has EXPLICITLY said they will NOT work on fixing the issues on the DJI ACTION 3 in Firmware. They CAN but they WON’T . I have had numerous emails with them that have been escalated. No dice. I have given DJI over $5,000 in the past few years. And have purchased EVERY “Action” and “Pocket” product. But I had switched entirely to Insta360. They listen to and support there customers. DJI does not. And it’s not because they CAN’T. It’s because the WON’T! They want me to give them ANOTHER $400+ just 11 months after I gave them $500+ for Action 3 that is unusable (for me). DJI is dead to me and my clients. So many thanks for mentioning this very underrated function of Action 4 .
    I am monitoring the growth of some fowl´s with live video and recording at the same time …mostly at tree level distance.
    I did ask to Gopro themselves , a while back , about the reasons for taking this function away …and their reply is not the one you mentioned , since they did won the Court case for infringements rights issues . You can check it out - Wikipedia.-
    It turns out ,in their reply to me ,that the reason for not TX live video while recording in 4K is that the Gopro quite simply “ will burn to cinders “ …or something to that effect.
    Keep up the good work and thanks again ..!!!

If I activated it, then found there’s no update for these settings or the update doesn’t meet my requirement, then I couldn’t get the refund at all, this is not the right way to sell a product, hope you can contact DJI and let them do this better, update the factory firmware to include all the features you guys are promoting.

    According to DJI specs, the sensor is different to the one in Mini 3 Pro. This one has 10 megapixel (3648x2736) 4:3 non quad bayer sensor. For video - this one is probably actually superior.

    • @kaimelis
      @kaimelis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @iPhonedo  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaimelis HDR thing backwards? How so?

    • @kaimelis
      @kaimelis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iPhonedo The Action 3 probably has a quad bayer sensor, but wasn't advertised as such because they couldn't get the 48 megapixel stills pipeline working (just speculating, please correct me with sources if I am wrong). But the so called "HDR" video is directly attributed to quad bayer sensors, because you have split pixels you can do different exposures and some form of fusion in real time (roughly speaking). So, if the action 4 had a quad bayer - it would definitely have the gimmicky HDR video mode (as opposed to getting it removed). It does not, because a regular sensor probably can't keep up making different exposure for different frames, BUT less pixels and non quad bayer structure means overall better readout and better dynamic range anyway (which ,I for example, prefer).
      If anyone with more solid info is reading this - please correct me. All news sites are also saying its the same sensor as mini 3 pro, non pro and etc, but most of them are garbage. Question is why does the photo resolution is not 4000x3000 then, or even 48 megapixel without debayering all the while the imaging pipeline is capable of 4k120 if its the same sensor. Is the photo mode cropping in? Is the fov of the photo mode different than the widest video mode? Do raw photos contain more pixels but a really aggressive correction file that crops in?
      Now I am just confused. If I had the camera, maybe I could answer this, because quad bayer sensors sometimes have a particular pattern with fine detail and noise.

    • @iPhonedo
      @iPhonedo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kaimelis I like your comment, it is a great discussion.
      Action 3's 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor has the photosite size of 1.6µm. If that sensor had quad-bayer filter array I don't think it would have limited FPS in HDR mode. I believe A3 shoots in double exposure, double frame rate in "HDR" mode and that is why it is limited to 30, because in the background it is shooting 60 or higher frames per second with alternating exposures and combines them into one frame, like iPhone X or some Insta360 cameras do.
      Action 4's 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor has the exact same photosite size with Mini 3 Pro which is 2.4µm. However, I'm guessing due to space restrictions and the difficulties of making a 155°FOV lens work on an action camera with that kind of sensor (compared to a drone) the effective MP may be 10MP. A4 doesn't switch between lowlight mode and regular mode once you start recording, I believe that is because in a lot of light it shoots in 48MP mode (40MP due to the effective area) and once you're indoors it takes advantage of the combined quad-bayer photosites and that's why it performs so well in low light.

    • @kaimelis
      @kaimelis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iPhonedo Great discussion for us camera nerds who review things :P
      Photosite sizes are often just derivatives of people dividing the sensor dimensions by the amount of pixels. Unless the spec comes from the manufacturer of the sensor directly, you can not trust which size it is referring to - the quarter of a split pixel or the entire site of four pixels. I have seen this lax approach too many times.
      I think the double exposure is enabled by the quad bayer nature of the sensor, it is double exposure, but not "true" double exposure of all pixels. Usually for these modes camera gathers different exposure info from different pixels at "almost" the same time. Two consecutive exposures would be too slow for what readout speed the sensor has, and the fusion is done on the sensor chip itself - not later in the imaging pipeline . That's why you can sort of call it "HDR" but see barely any artifacts in many cases. I believe every quad bayer smartphone ever works in the same manner with their so called HDR modes - and nowadays 99 percent of the smartphone main camera sensors are quad bayers. I think same applies to the A3. I reckon DJI Avata has the same sensor as A3, and it is clearly stated as 48 quad bayer while it also does not do 48mpix stills. The image is very similar from both as well.
      I thought so as well, that not the entire sensor may be used in the Action 4, but: marketing would have jumped at the opportunity to state maximum photo size at 7296x5472 and call it 40 megapixels and not 10.
      Regarding the low light thing, a quad bayer sensors do not mean worse or better low light performance and the different debayering process matters little. The overall light gathering capability of the sensor and lens combination is the same - whether the each pixel is split in 4 or not. Technically quad bayer sensors gather less light because there are micro gaps between the individual photosites. Combining them may reduce noise in some cases or increase per pixel detail, but that happens no matter the lighting conditions - a quad bayer camera will always shoot video with on-chip debayering (happens on the sensor - not later in the pipeline), the only way to get 48 megapixels is to take raw photos with that specific mode enabled. When it is - the readout speed drops hard and the entire pipeline is bogged down with more data, like the Mini 3 Pro (Mini 3 has the same sensor, but the mode is disabled).
      So on A4 it may be a 12 megapixel sensor of which 10 are effective, if it is quad bayer one - it operates with on chip debayering always enabled, even for raw photos. It would make sense, because it was the same approach with older A3 which had the 1/1.7 quad bayer unit but also never could output 48 megapixel stills, like the Avata. And here I was thinking they used a video focused true 10 megapixel sensor. But none of that matter is it just good anyway.

So with D-LOG you use a part av that bitrate to capture highlights and shadows that you might crush later in post when you add contrast. So I'm thinking recording in normal mode and get the colors and contrast right could give the best quality? Has anyone tested this?

    That is *very* important to my use case as I use this for moto vlogging and one of the *main* reasons I like the GoPro Hero 11 Black is the sound quality even with the dumb dongles. I also have Insta360 ONE RS and the sound is not as good with that, even though the video quality is good. Hey there. I'm considering buying a new action camera (OSMO ACTION 3 or 4). I want to use it for MotoVlogging.
    I currently own an AKASO Brave6+. The sound is pretty good and very easy (USB-C Lavalier mike =$15). It plugs straight in. Obviously, the image is very average and I'm wanting to improve the images for my youtube channel dramatically. Just purchased a Sony FDRX3000 for next to nothing, brand new - pretty easy to sort the sound on that (Has a 3.5mm jack). BUT, it has its own challenges in regards to helmet mounting.
    SO, I'm considering the OSMO ACTION 3 or 4.
    Here's my question. Is there any way to get audio out of the 3 or 4, without using an annoying dongle (That will probably cause faults and lots of crackles), OR the incredibly expensive (albeit very good) Wireless mike? Is there a good USBC Lavalier mike that plugs straight into the camera?
    This is a deal-breaker issue. Any help would be appreciated. There must be an option (unless DJI has designed the port to be strictly proprietary). I've searched TH-cam, but there appear to not be any good options.
    My next option is the original OSMO ACTION 1 (Still considered a MotoVlogging weapon). It is very easy to sort the sound on - BUT, where can I find a new, or near new one?
    My other option is the INSTA360RS 4k. Also needs a dongle/Audio adapter (But it is cheap and allows you to plug in any 3.5mm mike jack). This isn't my preferred option, as the picture quality is a step up from the AKASO, but not quite on par with the OSMO ACTION (Especially the 4).
    LONG QUESTION I KNOW - APOLOGIES.
    BEST REGARDS

  • @ScottJWaldron
    @ScottJWaldron ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice overview! I haven't seen anyone with access to the camera look into the UVC webcam mode so far. If you still have it and can spare the time, can it have stabilization on in that mode? The previous camera had that feature added through firmware but doesn't offer stabilization. This combination of UVC and stabilization could be useful in IRL streaming backpack situations.

    There is one thing that I don't like about this action camera is the still image resolution, 10 MP. Gopro 11 hero Balck's sensor resolution is 27 MP. DJI should be at par with GoPro. However, Action 4 is way far better than GoPro in other featuures, in my opinion. It's just it can't beat the image resolution level.

    I was still team GoPro prior to seeing your video of Action 4. Other tech reviewers of Action 4 disappointed me in their reviews but you made me switch. I wish DJI to take action for other reviewers who obviously doesn't know how to use the product and dismay the viewer in buying their product. Btw, GoPro still wins for ease of use even with bad UI. But Action 4 is better is the user is knowledgeable
