Carbon Fiber Pokeball - How it's made (Pokemon)

  • Hi everyone! After a few years I've finally managed to finish this carbon fiber pokeball!
    In this video tutorial you'll see me go through a few different prototyping techniques to finish this pokeball.
    First the two carbon fiber halves are made using the technique called resin infusion, this is a technique where epoxy resin is pulled through the carbon fiber using vacuum. This means that the carbon fiber is put into a mould with a layer of peelply on top, followed by an infusion mesh and then sucked under vacuum using a vacuumbag with tacky tape.
    Once the resin is cured the part is removed and trimmed. To achieve even better results, I've sanded the part and gave it a layer of epoxy on top. Trimming is done as well by hand using a dremel and permagrit rotary disk.
    The middle part with the 'push' button that will let the pokemon out is made out of epoxy resin. First a master was made using a 3D print. The 3D print is finished using a spray putty, then finished with a layer of clear. Once everything is ready the silicone mould is made using Additional cure silicone that has a transparant finish. The two halves of the mould are made using a spray release agent inbetween for easy demoulding. Once everything is fully cured we are ready to pour the epoxy resin into the silicone mould. I Went for a clear red tinted epoxy, Once cured the part is pulled out of the mould and sealed with a layer of 2K clear.
    For the wooden veneer stand the pokeball is put on I've used some wood veneer with some fiberglass and epoxy resin inbetween. When Still wet, so not fully cured, I've bend the sheet into it's final shape. Using vacuum and a vacuumbag for this is ideal as it will tightly compress all the layers, resulting in a strong, thin laminate.

    Great video man! I work in the aerospace composites industry and we use prepreg plies that already have the resin impregnated in them! But resin infusion is cool. I would get some cut resistant gloves that you can use for when you are demolding the carbon because I thought for sure you were going to cut your hand on those sharp flash edges.

    • @MatthieuLibeert

  • @Jbthecircuitdr
    @Jbthecircuitdr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you where to add a few leds inbedded in the resin center ring of the next Poke CF Ball you could add a 3.7v 1000mah lipo batt, with a micro lipo and install a wireless charging module in the bottom of the ball and in bed the qi wirless charge pad into the stand. You could have it constant, a ball bearing motion contact switch, or impact sensor hooked up to an adjustable timer ic for a few minutes light up time only when being picked up. Just a thought could work but the carbon might be to dense for the qi signal. If you like the idea we could possibly collaborate on it. Great injection CF work and it shows with all that time and effort.

    here would be a cool thing that you could do.
    if you weight the bottom, like you did, you could put a motion sensor inside so that when it stops rocking back and forth it could flash a light and play the little chime when a pokemon is caught.

    14:13 Funny story, it actually kind of looks like a Luxury Ball, a fairly niche/rare Pokeball type. They both have a black top and bottom, the main difference being that the Luxury Ball has a golden center ring as opposed to your red one. It also has a golden ring on its upper half, whereas yours is symmetrical - still, a really close match!
