    My 78 year old grandma drove a turbo Z around for years when I was growing up, I had NO idea what it was except that it was a "crappy 90s car" as explained by my dad. When she died we kept it in my garage for a year, trying to sell it and I still didn't know what it was. One time we ordered pizza and the pizza guy got super excited when he saw it and noticed it was the turbo model by the exhaust, he eventually bought it and delivered our pizzas with it haha. I had no idea how rare that car was until about three years ago when I got into cars. I wish my dad would've kept it, it was in immaculate condition.

    The first car I bought on my own, sans co-signer, was a 1988 Dodge Daytona with a normally aspirated 2.5 L engine. It cost $8,888.00 which was a Dodge special at the time for 1988. That car lasted over 10 years, and went well over 200,000 miles. Yes, I had to replace the head gasket! I also had the Saginaw steering column snap and drop into my lap on the Interstate as I was doing 80 MPH.
    My Daytona was in bright red, and around the year 2000 I got pulled over by a local cop at twilight who claims I was doing over 120 MPH. I think he thought I was driving a Porsche 944 or something similar. I explained to him that the car was over 10 years old, and if I went faster than 50 MPH the entire front end would shake. He asked me if I had a Turbo engine, I said, no, popped the hood and he took a look. After a short examination, which revealed a completely unmodified engine, he closed the hood, came back around to the drivers side window, told me to slow down, and then went back to his police cruiser and drove away.
    When I finally sold it, to a neighbor's son, for $600, the body was beat to hell, but the engine and transmission were still plugging away.
    God I loved that car!

      daammm! good price! My dad got a garnet red daytona new in '87, $10,006 bux. 2.2L na 5spd car. 36 mpg & reliable as the sunrise. man..after he & my bro & later a cousin had it, then sold it, she was at 220k and on the original mill, trans even clutch! i don't think a head gasket ever just let go on it, but it wasn't beat and shut off hot much. it had a head gasket put in at about 100k & again at 200k, but heck, not that big a deal as the trolls & such constantly whine about it, lol. better a gasket than some of the stuff that went away early on brand x cars, esp. back then all too often.

      I had a 1988 . Everything went up on that car motor transmission. Guess I got a Monday car. To this day I always look at them on the Internet and they’re very hard to fine. I guess most of them went to the junkyard. Sometimes I think Chrysler should bring them back and put a hellcat motor in one. 👍

      Lol I've owned my '92 Daytona a little over a month now and the I've had 3 people say it's the back to the future car 😂. What year GC radio did you swap in it? I'm guessing '93-98's will all work.

    • @brianrowland5713
      @brianrowland5713 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe this one came out of a late model ZJ. 97-98. But it also came in other late 90's cars like Minivans, trucks, etc. I see them all the time in the junkyard. I wanted to keep a stock radio because I have the Infinity speakers with the built in amps. But I also wanted something newer, so this was a good compromise. Also, tape deck so I can plug my phone in with an adapter for hands free use.

      Not everyone is into cars enough to know the difference. They only know what someone tells them or what they saw in a movie once, etc. My car has been mistaken for a DeLorean, Mustang, Conquest, Eclipse, and various 90's Japanese imports. It's all been people that don't really know the difference. Anyone remotely into cars knows what it is, or at least that's it's not one of those other things.

And even owned one of these daytona Shelbys. Fun car. Thankyou thankyou thankyou for this ! These cars never got the respect until these 2.2 turbo. Or 2.5 turbo. Busted up a fox body 5.0.

      I still work in IT, listen to grunge, and had a 1988 Dodge Daytona that was white with the 2.5 liter. The Army moved it to West Germany with me and when I drove it through Eastern Europe, instead of a DeLorean, the locals seemed to think it was a Porsche. Best speed on the Autobahn with the automatic transmission was 111 mph. Had to get rid of it in 1993 when the AC died for the second time in a year. My only Mopar since then was about a year with a silver PT Cruiser convertible - manual transmission base model.

    I've always had a soft spot for Daytonas, especially the exposed headlight ones with the Hunter paint scheme. I can't remember the last time I have seen one out and about. They seem practically extinct now. Just last week, I saw a video of someone crushing one with the popups like this one on TH-cam and it broke my heart.
    I am so happy that there seemed to be several people at this car show that were helping to keep them around.

    • @brian5o
      @brian5o 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Steve Varholy I love those old Citation X-11s and the Citations in general. I think it was their non-conformist vertical car stereo that made me a sucker for them. They also had their own, unique look about them and those X-11s, especially in black looked down-right menacing.
      It is really too bad that today, automakers don’t take the kind of chances in styling that they used to in the 80s. 80s cars looked very unique and automakers were willing to push the envelope into new territories like the 2-seater rear-engined Fiero and MR2. Today, all cars seem pretty cookie-cutter.

    I love 90s turbo mopars! They're huge in Mexico even today... but the nearest thing to a Daytona we had, was the Chrysler Phantom (AKA LeBaron Coupe) 2.2/2.5 Turbo just like the engine in this Daytona... there were some very interesting MDM (Mexican Domestic Market) turbo mopars like the DartK (Aries wagon) wagon 2.2TurboII, the Phantom 16v 2.2TIII or the Stratus RT sedan (first and second gen) with the 2.4Turbo that eventually would spawn the engine in the SRT4... those were great cars... Loved the turbo 2.5 - had a 89 Plymouth Voyager turbo van. Was great until the head gasket blew - didn’t run right after it was fixed for 6 months (turbo didn’t work - air intake hose would collapse on engine rev) then one day I was driving it (slow it would max 34 - 40 mph) and all the power came back. That was after I did a cat delete and solid intake hose and boy was that van quick.

    Small little trivia:
    Head units with a CD player were not even an option available on any k-car or platform derivative, at least until 1993. Even then, the unit was only with the higher end Chrysler’s like the Imperial/New Torker or fully loaded LeBaron Convertible/Sedan (which believe it or not, even had a car phone option that is installed on the sun visor).
    CD players were still an option on many K-Cars, but the unit would be separate and commonly replace the storage compartment below the main radio head unit. In the Daytona/LeBaron, for example, it would replace where the slide out cup holders rack is. These CD player units are still extremely rare and require a special cable to connect them to the main head unit.
    Thankfully, the Grand Cherokee introduced an incredible head unit with a CD player and cassette deck in the same box. It’s still a pricey OEM radio though (around a couple hundred for a properly working and complete unit)
    A 1990 Daytona Turbo is also quite the rare car. 1990 was when the turbo’s were being phased out and replaced with the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6. It’s a shame too, because starting in 1990, Chrysler introduced the best manual transmission made for their FWD applications: the Getrag A568. It was available ONLY with the 2.2L VNT Turbo in 1990, but any turbo engine starting in 1991. The last Turbo was made in 1993 for the USA so it was a short run of those marvelous transmissions.

      Yep. This head unit came from a late 90s Jeep. I've been pretty happy with it. I still have the original Infinity II stereo for this car with the CD plug on the back, but the 90 Daytona did not have a CD option because there's no extra cubby to mount it in. The 91-93 cars got the cubby spaces back.

I'm totally going to buy one if I ever get lucky enough to come across one for sale that can actually run. But I can easily get parts from a local junk yard, they have three. There's nothing special about them, but they are fun to drive.

    IIRC the 2.5 long-stroke had 2 balance-shafts located way down in the oil-pan and was not a "buzzy"engine like the 2.2 T2 when it came on boost and went crazy. Yep, may dad was really into turbo Chryslers and whenever dad brought over one of his cars for me to fix I'd drive them around and his 1990 Dodge Spirit ES with the 2.5 turbo was sooo much smoother with less NVH than his 1989 Chrysler TC with a 2.2 T2 without balance shafts. Really, you can't believe how much smoother the 2.5 was.

      my first car when I got my license on the very day I turned 16 was a 1991 Dodge Shadow ES Turbo 5spd. It's the reason that I have never owned a non turbocharged car in all 38 years of my life..... and the reason that my kids first car will NEVER be a turbo. The only reason I survived was because of how well the car held the road. If not for the stiff springs and the thick sway bars I would've gone off the road MANY times. The twisty roads in the mountains of Vermont were ripped up by that car. It'd do 145 like nothing, was an animal in the corners and was FAST.. Thing was white with a grey ground effects kit. Had the special hood that said Turbo along the raised sections, a nice rear wing and the sport 5 star wheels. The white on grey color scheme on that little two door looked so good. Even when I put a black front bra on it the car looked so sporty. Wish I still had it! With a set of lowering springs and 18's, that car would still turn heads. Of course I blew the headgasket in it and replaced it but oddly what finally killed that car right before I turned 18 was that a motor mount tore away from the unibody. Really odd and probably something that could have been fixed but I am sure my family's decision to get me out of that car was because of how fast it was. They thought I would be safer in a Saab... so I went out and bought my first one, a 1988 900 SPG turbo. They had no idea that the saab was even more of a beast! haha. Miss both those cars
