Brainy 'N' Brawny, actually, there are other instructors who cover classical, as well as Flamenco guitar. If you search specifically for those genres you will find some of them. If you are only searching metal & rock guitarists the chances of finding people who cover classical & or Flamenco are low. I am subscribed to jazz, classical, Flamenco, rock, & metal instructors, as well as funk & jazz bass instructors. But, Dave does cover various genres unlike some other instructors who usually only stick to one or two.
@@ThrashRebel - True - you are correct. I think it's just the style that Dave has created that I really enjoy. He's educating about the player/musician's history as well as showing you some of his licks. I like the COMBO!
"The '24 Caprices for Solo Violin' were written in groups (six, six and twelve) by Paganini between 1802 and 1807. His 24 Caprices were probably composed in 1807, while he was in the service of the Baciocchi court." - Wikipedia
Dave: "Hey Jack, what did you do this weekend? Anything fun related to guitar?" Me: "Oh, I listened to some three-chord cover band play a 'unique' version of 'Mustang Sally'. And you?" Dave: "Not much, just spent a few hours putting together an incredibly detailed, well-researched, and very educational video on 'the first guitar hero' Niccolo Paganini." Me: *stares down at the floor, then at my guitar in the corner of the room* :) Awesome, awesome stuff, Dave! One my favorite channels on TH-cam. Rock on!
Wow. This is a blast from the past that takes me back to the 80s. Yngwie appears and guitar player magazine had an interview where he said how important Bach and Paganini are to his style. Music shops in those days had large sections of music books. I ordered Paganini's 24 Caprices for guitar, which looked like it was from an amateur publisher printed on an early word processor. I had to learn to read music because it was not tab. I got a similar book with Bach. Everything you are playing I forgot I had learned. I also forgot how to read music due to tabs. it created a problem for me though. I had a book of stock blues licks and another one of rock licks that were blues based. I could never find a way to create a bridge between blues and classical like Malmsteen and Blackmore did. If I played one style the other would suffer, because i pick differently for each. 40 years later I have still not melded them together although switching styles is less trouble for me. That is one thing that amazes me about Malmsteen. He seamlessly fused the two styles of music by the time he was 18 years old.
“By the time he was 18 years old” dude set the bar high early didn’t he? His work is overall great but I always loved his work from his 20 mins in Alcatraz
Great mix of history and factual storytelling. It's difficult to keep my attention; even more so when I know quite a bit about a subject. I happily watched all of this and learned quite a bit about the artists who were influenced by Paganini.
Awesome lesson! Fun fact: when young, Franz Liszt saw Paganini at a concert and decided to be a similar virtuoso on piano (and obviously succeeded). So the trope of "young kid sees a killer player and is profoundly influenced" goes back a long way.
Please do more lessons like this. Those classical lines sound so good on their own, making them an enjoyable challenge. Every praiseworthy comment you receive is well deserved. Thank you so much.
Wow. I absolutely respect your lesson choice here. I play rock, but love classical music. It’s very demanding. Here’s hoping you incorporate many more classical composers into our rock/shred/metal world. Again, much respect!
Im glad you did this! My favorite piano piece is La Campanella which is based on a theme by Paganini. He was a wild man! Definitely fits in to the aura and vibe of a rockstar.
Another great video! You make everything look so easy and effortless, even though it's often complex stuff. Awesome playing and a really relaxed and humble attitude. You, my good sir, are an inspiration.
Beautiful! Thanks for another great lesson. It's awesome especially to see another players transcription for this. I spent a few years transcribing most of the 24 violin caprices for electric guitar. I never really nailed playing all of them or could even just remember it all, lols. You play this cleaner than I did back in the late 80's and 90's when I was still working on them. And thanks so much for suggesting Eliot Fisk. I've heard of him before but was unaware that he play all 24 caprices.
Hey David, great lesson as usual! Love all the content you’re pouring out for us! That strat of yours sounds really good! What pickups did you put in it? Seems you’ve been using them for a while so you probably like them a lot! Thanks!
Thanks Adrian! They're all Seymour Duncan - JB hum (bridge), reverse-wound (middle), Cool Rail (neck). They're a great set and seem really balanced! Thanks again and rock on!
To The Max!!!!!!!!!! Haven't Heard that expression since probably the winter of 1979! And Edith and Archie singing "those were the days!" Awesome lesson as always! I'm looking forward to tackling this one!
LOVED THIS -all the variations over the same chords is like gospels from different men giving their interpretation over the same theme. The trill string skipping variation really opened up the fret board when covering the bass note answers to the trill questions posed. I'll shut up now. Now I have to find the time to hit these. Thanks David. Awesome lessons.
Awesome video, Paganini was great. Watching this reminds me of when my guitar teacher transcribed (and played!) Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor over the course of a couple of guitar lessons. It’s always awesome hearing classical music brought to life through Clean Electric guitar playing.
Cool lesson , I remember there was an arts tv show over here in the UK called 'The south bank show' its theme tune was a variation of the caprice in A min , the guitarist was Gary Moore. If I remember correctly the album it came from was called 'Variations' by Andrew Lloyd Webber'
Holy crap!! This stuff is mind blowing 🤯, I don't know how far I'm going to get with it, but I have try some of it!! Thanks for delivering such outstanding music!! The history and the background makes the whole thing come together, this is my first video of yours, I'm hooked!! Please keep doing what you do!!
Wow, damn bro... That is some heavy duty beautiful deluxe playing! I'm literally scared to pick up my guitar now!!! How on earth did you develop the patience to learn so much amazing music? I am both stunned and in awe of your ability. Trying to get myself worked up to learn some of the stuff from your channel, but I keep procrastinating. Lol.
Dude, this was friggin Awesome! Man your content is always killer. I'm a newer guitar player and you have taught me soo much. Thank you for sharing your love and knowledge with us!
"Not going to lie to you, this is really hard". As Dave Brewster aka Vinne Malmsteen aka Eddie Vai Paganini shreds it with no issue as if he is an Alien! Awesome.
Great content from the history to the music it adds up to sheer brilliance. FYI, on the first variation those grace notes are not optional which is what I thought when I first got into classical music and saw those first three tiny notes.
As the Arpeggios weren‘t enough, in the original piece there are sweeps combined with your „simple“ Arpeggios Not of this Earth... would like to See you playing #16 on Guitar 🙈 ... Great Video 👍🏻
Brilliant lesson - love this . Paganini was introduced to me by my music teacher when I was 11 , never forgot the skill full playing - or the visual impression ... maybe Ritchie Blackmore got some influence from him on dress and playing. Stellar lesson Dave - you just keep raising the bar - Really pleased to see the subscribers increase too - you deserve it ...... Any chance your "Shape Shifting" book will be out for Christmas ?
I wish you were around in 75 when I first started guitar lessons with the Mel Bay book and teacher. You explained it to Simply 10 on video it's much more easy to learn
I keep coming back to this lesson Dave - unbelievable!!! - a superb workout and just enough theory . No doubt you could nail the George Lynch Paganini piece from his GL Bible DVD ??? Thanks again.
I have the 24 caprices on cd some where with Iskak Pearlman playing them in violin. Awesome stuff If you listen to certain ones they sounds very much like guitar shred licks that would become common in the 1980s. Fast runs, trills slides up and down the fingerboard harmonics Really killer stuff one wonder Malmsteen idolizes him :) I’ll have to find that Fisk record sounds awesome
Actually, Paganini did preform guitar in public, mind you with a couple friends and in heavy disguise. He said the guitar was his master, although he was the master.of the violin. Vai also based Eugene's Trick Bag on the 24th Caprice finale, aside from the 5th. Eliot Fisk's Classical guitar rendition of the Caprices has been in my collection since the late 90's.
The very first album I ever bought with deep purple come taste the band and I took it to my third guitar lesson and show the old man and said I want to learn how to play this. And he kept trying to show me Mary Had a Little Lamb and other nursery rhyme type scales. I have progressed more in the Last 5 Years From TH-cam videos like yours then they did from 10 years from that dude
I don't know if your against tabs but it might help some players to see what your doing, being watching for about 3-4 months now I am really enjoying your content man, especially the Triumph one I can never get enough Triumph.
I was looking at some lady yesterday, I have forgot her name, but she was playin a pice of paganini, and to day this shows up. It's a littel scarry to think, that my own Phone is stalking me. I hate when it do's that, but I love paganini, so what the hell, thanks for the vid🎸🤘And thanks for the lesson, but who says that I Can play the guitar, or whan't to lern it. MY PHONE. Now I have to get my self a guitar, and learn, Cos it look's like, that it's what it whan't me to.😂😂
Again I have to say..brilliant video...I learn and understand so much every time I watch one..just makes me pick up my guitar. And that bonus lick. I actually shouted out "fuck"..😂😊😊🤘😎
Who would have thought? Paganini! Had to drink caffeine for my eyes to keep up with your fingers. I wonder if James Pankow could play that on the trombone? Hmmmmm
Nice licks by paganini thanks for the video on this do more on paganini licks would be nice. Any future video on Uli Roth licks? Uli Roth has solo albums in the 70's and also did a vivaldi 4 seasons album, any vivaldi lick video also?

Big big props for being an American in 2019 that mentions Helloween
There should be some Kai Hansen 3 for all some day
Not sure where you are, but Helloween is still huge in America (or at least here on the East coast). They just did 8 dates a month or so ago...

Yngwie's main inspirstion. Very cool unique idea for a video man, great job =)

You really knocked it out of the park with this lesson Dave!
Awesome stuff, David! Especially the bonus lick is a killer lick and really reminds me the sound of a violin...
Now that was a great lesson. Thanks Dave.
"I just love music anyway". -> that message has to be spread everyhwere :)
Thanks, David. Wasn't expecting this, but I totally appreciate it!!!! GP rules!
awesome video man! keep up the great work! enjoying this over my morning coffee
