Great lesson. Would love to see a break breakdown of “I am a Viking”, “Krakatoa” & the almost impossible to play “Now Your Ships Have Burned”. So many great Yngwie tunes!!!
I like Yngwie's rhythm playing as much as his leads. I feel like he did his best songwriting on Marching Out, Trilogy, Fire and Ice and Odyssey. Thank you for breaking down all those great riffs. Especially Dreaming, which is a beautiful song. Absolute magic.
Saw him live too. I was not only impressed by his playing, but that he would turn out the lights, throw up has strat and catch it while ripping back into the show. You have to admire that!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bro, the Trilogy was the first Yngwie album I bought but I think the one that I love the most because of the quality of the song writing is Facing The Animal. I love everything he did from Alcatrazz to Facing The Animal. By the way Magic Mirror is a freaking insane song.
Brian Osbment there’s a lot of musical styles / influences behind where Yngwie came from. Makes sense that you could appreciate in different musical styles.
And eddie new it. Ed dodged yjm foerever when they were at the same functions/events. Ed finally met up with someone who was light years away from him as eric clapton found out in 66 when jimi hendrix invaded england. I love ed, he had his thing but on a serious guitar level yjm raised the bar and and blossomed a rock neo classical shred genre that continues to this day. No yngwie no shred heros you know and love today. Ed was a technique...yngwie was a genre. Thank god for both!!!
That was awesome. I could have looked at the TAB versions of this stuff for years and not gotten ANYTHING out of it. What a great job of giving insight into playing this stuff. Thanks !
Dave Brewster: @13:46 Skummtoons'66: Ears really perked up! Wow, beautiful. Thank you. Dave and everyone here, have a Merry Christmas, and be safe and keep jamming!🎄🎸
Really love your videos, David, keep 'em coming. Never been a fan of Yngwie myself, actually I only started liking his stuff recently, but anyone who's practised the guitar has to realise he's one of the best. Ok, he repeats himself, he likes playing fast, a lot, etc, etc, but, come on, he created a school of his own, with so many guys being inspired by him. And he's still flawless on the instrument. He deserves respect.
Rising Force was the first Yngwie cassette I bought. I listened to it over and over trying (and failing) to learn some of the songs. This one holds a special place for me and instantly takes me back to a time long ago when I was a teenager sitting in my room with my Charvel guitar. My parents were still alive…music can be so powerful in its ability to transport you back in time and recall memories.
His marshall set up back in the day was very strange, but his tone largely came from his old Dod pedal, 8s strings and old dimarzio hs3 pickups. It's extremely hard to replicate. Great playing on your video here. Very cool.
Great album indeed. Trilogy was Yngwie's first blossom into melodic songs, yet there is that rawness to it that remains gripping as you say. Arguably, and aside from his first album which is a category in itself, end even though both albums with Joe Lynn were really good, from a musical pov, I think "Fire and Ice" may well be his best album ever, great songs, great melodies, and possibly his best band lineup. The downhill slide started after that, slowly at first, and then it just snowballed, to a point now where all he does is record the same old covers in his living room and calls that an album. As a fan for 40 years, sadly I find he has done nothing even vaguely exciting for almost 20 years...
Great lesson(s) on Yngwie, Ive been a huge fan since the Steeler album. I agree about Trilogy being a fav album, but those first 3 albums are just steller. I go through a phase of relearning a bunch of Yngwie songs every 2-3 years, it always starts with reacquainting myself with Trilogy Suite (every damn time I mix up the arraignment). Yngwies tone has primarily been based around Marshall Plexi 5o watt heads with a DOD 308 pedal/preamp pushing the front from a stock Strat, later the SD/dimarzio pickups would be added. Show idea ---> perhaps you could focus on a single album and pick your way through each track finding the most interesting ideas chord/melody/technique etc.
I always had some issues going on with Yngwie's music. I even can't explain what it was I did like and did not like at the same time. Your lesson did open my eyes for some details I missed or didn't quite understand. Thank you for that. I will use the following hours to dive into 'Trilogy'. Have a nice day.
dude besides your playing...it's killer, your tone is eargasmic, such a joy watching this lessons, by the way the Trilogy album is just perfect, keep uploading man
Im a Yngwie´s Fan, but I was surprised I have the same Behringer Vampire Amp you are using; I bought it from a Pawn SHop really cheap with 4x12 Cabinet and it sounds amazing.
Great lesson David. Please do a Yngwie Chordplay part II with some tracks from Odyssey and Eclipse. Devin In Disguise is my favorite Yngwie track of all time. It's so killer! Brilliant playing of Dreaming by the way. Live in Leningrad is the best live album I've heard any musician put out sound-wise. Yngwie was 100% in the zone for that one.
I just found this great video, thanks! I really liked YJM when he first started, especially Trilogy. A couple of his later albums which I also liked a lot were Odyssey (I agree it’s his best) and Facing The Animal. 👍 Cheers!
SUPER apreciated on your videos of solos and licks. Especially this one! Been playing for years following Bucketheads work, but want to get into another complex style. Been a huge fan of malmsteens 80s solos and riffs as of lately, and your tutorials and informational videos are spot on and easy to follow! Cheers from Winnipeg, Canada
Awesome content and instruction as always! \m/ Really enjoy your commentary and background stories for the guitarist/band your breaking down the chords/scales for, well done. Look forward to the next lesson, keep rockin your efforts are greatly appreciated!
trilogy was mind blowing for a new guitar player who just bought a gibson les paul custom and a jcm800 back in the mid 80s . it along with all the other incredible music molded me into the guitar player I AM TODAY.one part malmsteen, one part kk/tipton, one part jake e lee,one part eddie van halen,a couple dashes of george lynch, add some warren dimarinni and matias jabbs and if only i could've got into the right band i could be a fat poorly aging rock star living in the past(kind of like i do now, minus the fame)
Tastes differ. I thought the Bradshaw rack ruined his tone on Trilogy. Marching Out with Jeff Scott Soto is the pinnacle for me. I feel every solo and song on that album had real thought, time, and work put into it.
No apologies necessary, I will go out on a limb and say it’s probably many Yngwie fans favourite album. My only gripe with this album is it seems very low in the volume department. Thank you for these lessons, you have helped many of us.
what do you think of the intro part of "Crystal Ball" ? Not really any chords there (I think), but must be one of the best intro parts of any song written IMO ! Btw. if you do another Yngwie video, would be nice to hear you try play it (maybe with some backing synth/beat)!
11:11 I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Yngwie has used Drop D, I have jammed some classical pieces that required it. Tried my hands at a few Yngwie songs, just nothing in drop. Great riff brake down. Got yerself a new sub.
JL Turner is a great vocalist. No doubt. And I love Odyssey. But for me, you just can't beat Jeff Scott Soto's vocals man. Holy crap that dude has so much power and such amazing control, esp on his vibrato. He makes those tunes just come to life and get in your face! You picked so many of my fav tunes in this one. Great stuff David. Thanks for this one.
Great stuff...as always No worries Trilogy is my favorite of his too. I used part of Trilogy Suite in a guitar solo back in 80s in a guitar wars final. Mick Murphy won it though.
Thanks David Brewster for the awesome video. There are a lot of musicians that have used the harmonic minor scale, but I think Yngwie is the master at it in his genre. If you ever get a chance, Richie Blackmore would also be a great one to cover.
I think Marching Out has the best overall dark vibe and sound. I'd argue that his playing sounds more "pissed" on that than Trilogy. The intro riff to "Soldier without Faith" would've been perfect for this episode. Deja Vu is another one with cool riffs and chords. I think a round 2 is in order for Yngwie chordplay. Hehe.
I think the same about the trilogy album...Yngwie has that explosive intention both riffs and solos...then in the 90's in my opinion facing the animal is another album I found that burning fire as u call it very well...the tone in that one is awesome...regards from Uruguay
This guy needs to be well paid for these killer lessons!
Quiet, you! He might be listening!!
You bet he's freakin' amazing. It's incredible how he morphs into all this different styles.
Definitely layin out some good stuff .
No because then yngwie would sue lol

*Yngwie is an outstanding composer. He still amazes me of what he has done for the guitar world. Thanks for the vid.*
Great lesson. Would love to see a break breakdown of “I am a Viking”, “Krakatoa” & the almost impossible to play “Now Your Ships Have Burned”. So many great Yngwie tunes!!!
i love "i am a viking"
I follow you on Now your ships are burn ! This kickass song need a proper analysis / lesson
Marching out is my favorite Yngwie album! Jeff Scott Soto was killer and Yngwie was at his best!
Those albums was when he worked with a producer!
Fire and Ice is bad ass!
I have to say. You do the best lessons out of anyone on TH-cam. No gimmick chatter. Just very calm and right to the point. As always, well done sir.
Agreed!!
Saw him live too. I was not only impressed by his playing, but that he would turn out the lights, throw up has strat and catch it while ripping back into the show. You have to admire that!!!!!!!!!!!!
he was badass live,i got one chance and i took it.shame it was for the tour after "heaven tonight" when he fired everyone AGAIN
Fire is definitely one of his most underrated songs. Glad you added that riff in there. Excellent break down of Yngwie's riffage.
Marching Out is the best Yngwie record.... ever. Another fantastic lesson Dave!
The man released 5 pure masterpieces. And Im including Seventh Sign on those five. What a legend.
Leo I only really liked his first three records and his Alcatrazz stuff
His Steeler album was awesome
@@___and_memes_for_all It was/is.
@@TMoody everything Yngwie touch’s turns to gold.
I caught myself singing Magic Mirror. You got me. Appreciate the lesson!
Ah, that was a trip down memory lane. I absolutely loved Trilogy when it came out. Loved it.
Dude, love your videos! Yngwie became part of my life when I was 15, that’s 25 years ago. He’s a living legend.
Ive been grinding on "Disciples of Hell" & those other classics for decades thank you sir
You've taught me how to play SO MANY riffs that I might never have figured out myself. Thank you!
And he does it in real speed and makes it look effortless. Wow.

Hell yeah! I love Yngwie' s chord work and rhythms. I play nothing like him really, but still wanna learn from his style.
Brian Osbment there’s a lot of musical styles / influences behind where Yngwie came from. Makes sense that you could appreciate in different musical styles.
@@zeusstudios4724 I agree! I was big fan of Yngwie back in the day.
I can't play like Yngwie much at all, but he's one of my biggest influences! I know exactly what you mean!
Kids today have no idea how super unusual Yngwie was - when he hit.
In my opinion, he way surpassed Van Halen in creativity and wildness !

On the Trilogy CD Love the song Crying!!!
One of his best instrumentals besides Overture 1383 , Marching Out & Trilogy op5
I could watch your vids all day! Thanks for not only the techniques, but also the insight and stories.
Very nice. Love your lessons. Thank you very much.

Excellent work Dave! I'm of the opinion as with most players here, that YJM's rhythm work is often overlooked...thank you! Such an awesome lesson 👍
You have rekindled my efforts to learm some Yngwie firework and I thank you sir!

Yeah I know what you mean about that early Yngwie tone especially on the Trilogy album. You could of went through every riff off it & I’d been happy !
