Either throw main form in the wheel.. or use slab method and use something cylindrical like a pvc pipe and use that to wrap your clay around, but be sure to use a peice of news paper around the pipe, and don't tape it on. That way you'll be able to remove the pipe and then gently pull the paper out as you slowly twist and pull. Make a slab base and attach it well with a lot of slip. When I make them I make the plumbing on the outside in an artistic fashion and make a hole in the bottom...e.g. I made one that was an arm and the hand was the bowl. You make another hole above the bowl if you desire a shot gun hole.

probably standard low to midfire clay is fine, most clay is perfectly safe to use because its really just fancy dirt with water no additives usually in stoneware. i use cone 5 clay and i dont have any issues with that. i have heard that high fire clays can crack when exposed to direct flame which may not be great for a pipe. also plain unglazed stoneware has been used for pipes for centuries so id consider that definitely safe. as for glazes im less certain as glazes often contain many different components sometimes heavy metals for coloring so id check ingredients on any glaze you choose to use. as for “paint” under no circumstances would i paint a pipe with regular paint. most paints are not meant to be heated up and definitely not meant to be in contact with direct flame.

please don’t try any of what you just said. Air dry clay is not microwavable. you should also never use air dry clay for drinks, food, or to smoke out of. even with food safe glaze it’s not safe. as in making the structure most probably yeah, but won't be a good idea to smoke out of it. 1. Pretty sure it has a very low melting point 2. Pretty sure its toxic.
Breanna van Beek Well, normally i leave the flat part on the bottom unglazed. However, if you want to glaze all sides you can buy something called stilts! Google “pottery stilts” for more info!

Hey I’ve been wanting to make a pipe that has two pieces, a stem and a bowl, and I was wondering if there was a way to keep it from held together but also able to be pulled apart
Joshua Tomkies-Lim No, unfortunately not for a few reasons! First, you definitely don’t want to be breathing in any clay dust. Second, its not vitrified so it’s still porous and will collect bacteria over time. I recommend doing a google search and seeing if there’s any studios nearby where you live! A lot of them will fire work for people :)

Hi there, no air dry clay does not work because it is not food-safe or heat-resistant. You must use actual clay that gets fired in a kiln to cone 5 (approx. 2200°)

You don't actually need to glaze on the inside because the clay is fully vitrified (not porous) after it's fired. However, some people do prefer to glaze on the inside because it tends to be a little easier to clean the pipe when it's glazed.
