  • Like many owners of these older Jet Boats, the time has come for me to replace the stringers in my 1979 Centurion. I have not come across much detailed content on the process required to perform this repair on these types of boats. Because of this I decided to thoroughly document my journey through the process, showing the problems I encounter and how I overcame them. I will do my best to explain the tools and techniques that I used to perform these repairs. My goal is to try to keep the detail high in these videos, while also trying to keep them from getting to long and drawn out. So I will try to break these videos down into smaller segments. So if you haven’t I encourage you to subscribe to the channel so you can be notified of the new videos coming out. I hope that you find this series of videos to be helpful for your project. If you have comments, suggests or tips that you would like to share please leave them in the comments section! Thank you for watching!

As someone not experienced with either, I cannot tell if fiberglass/wood repair on a boat or rust repair on a car is more frustrating 😄 But great to see the process!

So was the engine to pump centerline off because of the bad stringer?

Well, it wasn't helping. The engine and pump were not sitting in line in a resting position. I found that both the engine and pump were installed off of the center line of the boat. This was made worse because the rotten stringers had lost all their strength. Thus, the torque from the engine was causing more movement. If my stringers were structurally sound, I could have corrected this issue by simply repositioning the engine.

Do you have to take the boat of the trailer or can the repair be done with the boat on the trailer?

Absolutely take the boat off the trailer.
Once you remove the floor and stringers their is very little strength left in the boat. If you left the boat on the trailer and removed the floor and stringers, just the weight of the hull on the bunks will deform the floor. Then as you laminate the new stringers in that deformation will be permanent. This can cause handling problems.
The boat should be off the trailer with two jack stands at the rear, and one up under the center of the keel at the front. The boat should be level, measuring from the bottom side of the keel.
If you watch my time lapse sections of the video’s closely, you can see just how much the hull flexes as I move around. It did not do that when the floor and stringers were still in.

I just had a guy lost week wanted me to replace the stringers in his boat ofcourse i had to remove motor and all so i told him $4000 . He said he can get it done for $200 . I laughed and walked away .

👀 I would be scared to see the quality of work on a $200 stringer job. That wouldn’t even cover the cost of the wood. 😂

@@AutoTechNick i do a pressure press stainles clad myself innerstitching to the hull prety much a 10 year pluss life expectancy . And at $4000 i felt i was shaving $2000 off the job .
