Hi! I watched this small series of underpainting and over painting videos. Very informative. Got a question though, what blending brush is that? And what size is the brush too please? It looks so useful.

I blend with old discontinued Langnickel Series 408 LT Regis Extra Long Filbert brushes, sizes 2 and 4, which are getting old and losing bristles. Extra Long Filberts are most useful brushes and they are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. I’ve begun replacing those brushes with Winsor & Newton Extra Long Filberts Nos. 2, 3 and 5, and Rosemary Brush Co. Eggberts Nos. 2, 4 and 6. -P

Hello White Blossom. The pre-mixed piles of color contain no medium. Sometimes I apply just medium to the areas I am about to paint then apply dry paint (with no medium) onto those areas. Sometimes I mix a bit of medium into my puddles, the ones that are constantly being created from color mixing on the palette (not the piles) I then apply that paint to areas that were not oiled out with medium first. It may sound somewhat complicated but its not. Usually the mixtures made from transparent tube colors get the medium mixed in, the opaque mixtures usually go onto areas that have been oiled out with medium first. But not always. Hope that helps. -P

Hello White Blossom. I don't use turpentine at all, way too smelly and expensive. I use Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS), but it never gets mixed into any colors, its only used for cleaning brushes. The pinks and reds get mixed with some medium and are then applied directly over the underpainting. For the darker (shadowed) areas I usually oil out the areas first then apply transparent colors dry, in this case Quinacridone Magenta and a bit of of Perylene Maroon. I then scrub dry, more opaque color by adding Fanchon Red as necessary to add a bit of light into the shadows to liven them up. -P
