    • @stephanieruggiero471
      @stephanieruggiero471 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      It won't fail. They test every other day. They have like 20 BIG UVB bulbs in the back that make the water good. It's just not a lot of water flow in it and putting to much gravel to block filter.

    • @PsychoFisho
      @PsychoFisho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Lack of water movement means no UV flow-through. Once the pump fails, the water all becomes stale and full of algae, which feeds on the growing mounds of debris as it decomposes. Hey, this is great water for growing water plants and tropical plants!

      When I got hired at Petco 12 years ago I got no training except on the registers. Since then we have come up with plenty of computer training that gives the basics of animal care and maintenance. Everything I know about animal breeds, most of their care, and proper/preferred habitat setup I have gained from on the floor "training" and "shadowing", and talking to many hobbyists and vets, etc. It is unfortunate that extensive training is not required. And, like it or not, even live animals are "merchandise". I'd say the majority of us have a passion for animals but not everyone has the knowledge. That's why I advise to request a specialist at the store (and no, there is not always one available, because again, retail) to get your questions properly answered. A good employee will say, " I don't know, let me find out," rather than make something up and risk poor animal care.

      The store doesn’t get to choose when fish comes in. Everything is on an automatic replenishment system. Meaning that if a fish is sold. The computer automatically orders a new one to come in the next week. When things break down, the associates & not even the management has a way to stop shipments from coming in.

    I work at a ct petsmart in the petcare department. So my department is directly in charge of cleaning and maintaining our fish tanks. And it just so happens that we have the exact same set up with identical tanks and filter intakes at our store as the ones in this video. Old tanks or not, there is no excuse for the much algae build up. Algae comes off of those and all fiah tanks very easily. As far as there being sick fish in the sales floor tanks, that's also poor management at the store. All petsmart stores get their fish from breeders and all animal breeders are breeding grounds for disease. All stores recieve weekly shipments of fish and upon recieving those fish they are all supposed to be inspected and if they apear unhealthy in and form whatsoever are to immediately be pulled and put into an isolation tank in the back room which is much more heavily medicated than the sales floor tanks. That girl doesn't know what she's talking about either. I've worked in my petcare department for over two years and even though the old style filter(which costs about $25,000) does tend to have problems more frequently, the filters themselves can be changed regularly. We change out our foam filter cartridges 2 or 3 times a week depending on build up on them. Days they are not changed they are flipped over to utilize both ends of the filter. We definitely do not just wait for it to break and have a handy man do all of the work. That's insane. There is very basic maintenance that keeps things running smoothly for the most part and when something does break in our filtration system it does not mean don't clean the tanks for two weeks. which is about how long it takes for build up like that to happen. No matter how many fish tanks a store has, every single one must be scrubbed and gravel vaccumed once a week. I seriously hope that people don't watch this and assume that all petsmart stores are like this. I'm proud of where i work and i take pride in doing my job correctly. I love all animals and some people obviously shouldn't be allowed anywhere near animals. You guys should post what stores you're filming at so that people know where to avoid and don't just generalise all stores in a chain to be miserable. My boss knows how to crack a whip and the way i was trained on cleaning fish tanks was if it wasn't up to company standards, you kept recleaning them until they were done right. When i first started there were times i had to clean the same set of tanks three times in a row in one shift before i got an okay from my boss. The important thing is that i learned the right way and have a passion for my job. Where ever this store is they clearly have poor management and badly trained employees. Please don't judge all of our stores based on this alone.

    • @savannam.7048
      @savannam.7048 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Elizabeth Clark, agreed. I worked at an "old" PetSmart and our filter pads were changed every night with the screens scrubbed every night. If tank cleaning rotations are being done correctly, algae and detritus NEVER got that bad. You could just start to tell algae was popping up on the assigned tanks for the day. A big problem is the bright lights all day, but if employees are doing their job to correct standards, none of this should happen! Sick fish are immediately pulled and isolated. There's really no excuse for these tanks!

      Judging by the amount of tanks they have, it's gotta be a big store. That's a lot of tanks to clean! But really management should have a proper amount of workers back there to make cleaning and closing duties easier to keep that amount of buildup from happening. My store is the same age and the buildup isn't nearly that bad if everyone keeps up on it each week. It never hurts to spot clean when it isn't busy

      I think your average petstore worker DOES care about the fish, but their hands are tied. Same with rodents and reptiles- I got a hamster there and the lady gave a sales pitch on a tiny cage but when I told her I already had a 75 gallon tank to put it in she lit up. She talked to me and she said that she knew hamsters did better in large cages but if she didn't try to sell the ones they had, she'd be fired. That being said the hamster died 19 days later-right after the two week warranty.

      Some do, my guy! I work at a Petsmart and everyone is super passionate about the safety of the pets before we sell them. Our tanks look, besides the general Petsmart set up, nothing like the tanks displayed here. Tank maintenance is something that is never skimped on. Tanks at my Petsmart are scrubbed and vacced on a weekly schedule.
      Also! Petsmart as a company provides very little (or poor) information on the care of the pets/fish to associates. We're given a very very brief overview of animal care in a small associates book but that's about it. Associates are often not experienced fish keepers or animal keeps, but I know at our Petsmart, we're constantly researching things and doing our best to learn as to give close to adequate care as we can. Even this Petsmart is trying its best to accommodate for the broken filter.
      That being said, associates have no power over what upper management/corporate decides to do with the fish or pets...it's the business part of Petsmart that prioritizes money over the animals and it frustrates everyone. I wish it could be better but we do our best give the pets a comfortable surrounding and hopefully a good home.

    • @PsychoFisho
      @PsychoFisho 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that's not true. Its not the same part breaking over and over, and there aren't that many parts to break.
      The truth of the matter is that the system has been down for some time already, and if its been that way for weeks/months, what's the rush to take any action? They get used to the filter not working.
      My store policy would be the moment it does down, we schedule a repair with a specialist vendor. It doesn't matter if its 3 hours or next day, it will get fixed within 24 hours.
      While they are at it, they need to install a back up pump where they can just swing a plumbing lever and plug in the pump to keep water movement and movement through the filtration system, even if at a much slower flow.

    • @shannonstibor6967
      @shannonstibor6967 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Toad Not at a PetSmart, but still manage. I've dealt with situations like that before. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and fix what needs to be fixed so it's not an ongoing issue. When you're out of product/have to keep replacing and no one is buying, you lose money. It's just the way it is. Sure, some people will still buy sick/dying fish from nasty tanks... but the better your store is, the more customers you get, the more money you make. It's that simple. Whether someone manages a PetSmart or not doesn't matter.

    I worked in pet stores for over 20 years, and 10 of them were at Petco. I ran the fish department and it was pristine at all times. Brian Devine loved visiting my department. He said it was the one of the best he'd seen and the best on the East Coast. The tanks were running Marineland systems that I had to maintain and fix myself, sometimes with ML support on the phone with me for hours getting a filter motor running again. My arms were always in the tanks, cleaning the algae (which, you could actually watch it grow). The filters got changed 2-3x a week, rinsed in between. I also rigged the systems (2-3 blocks of tanks would have its own system) to run its own water changes. Fixing the spigot just right to change about 50-75 gallons of water each day (the system was approximately 300 gallons). Every week, I used a Marineland HOT Magnum with a course filter to suck up the crap I stirred up from the gravel. It would take about 5 minutes per tank. Then, go back through with the micron cartridge to polish the water. If fish were sick, they came in that way. But it was difficult to treat them. You had to treat the system and not just a tank. Depending on the meds, you had to remove all of the catfish from the system and relocate them during the course of treatment. The problem too, was that diseases would spread throughout the system. I had previously worked in a mom and pop store where all of the tanks had their own little Whisper filters. I'd toss a Little Giant water pump into the tank, stir up the gravel and let the pump suck everything straight to the floor drain. Then I'd go through with a hose (coming off an R/O system) and refill the tanks. The filters got changed weekly. That. by far, was the best way I used. Diseases stayed in the one tank and I could have quarantine tanks, too. Besides, if the main system filter stopped working, you were screwed. In the indiviudual set-ups, you just tossed a new $10 Whisper on it. I'm not a Whisper fan (AquaClear for me), but they did the job, cheaply. Every Petsmart's tanks looks like this one. Her saying that it was because the store was 10 years old is BS, the Petco I worked in was older than that and because the systems were maintained, there were no problems. This is just pure laziness.

      Same, I worked as an Aquatics Specialist at Petco and actually took care of the fish. Petsmart is even worse than petco when it comes to their systems. At least we have separate towers so each tower is it's own system even if there's several tanks on the one tower. I'm pretty sure all of petsmarts towers are ALSO connected to each other so it's even easier to spread disease.

    Nice Cichlid’s.
    I remember my friend working at a pet store when I was into Cichlids. (Tanganyika)
    After the store had closed, my friend was just finishing up before we were gonna leave.
    Then he remembered one more thing to do…..
    He opened up a small closet stacked with cages. He grabbed a big scoop of dry dog food and threw it on top on the cages.
    Thousands of “feeder” mice started eating thru the bars of the cages.
    He shut the door and said “let’s go!” I could still hear them feeding inside.
    It got me thinking about the pet industry….. Zoo’s…..Amusement parks… Etc.

    One thing I have noticed about petsmart is that their fish are young ...Bought eleven Gourami
    Four months ago and every one of them are healthy and thriving...furthermore it depends on the amount of fish a tank has
    That's what determines how often to maintain it

    My tank was disease free for over 12 years .. then one day my son brings home a PetSmart fish to replace one of my old ones that died (old age) and put it in my tank as a surprise. The real surprise was finding ALL of my fish infected with ick in about 24hrs! 225 gal of water change, filter media removal and medicating the water over the next few days just to get it back under control. His heart was in the right place .. just bad judgement by placing the new fish in the main tank before quarantine. That was about five years ago. No diseases since.

    So let me just say this.... the feeder fish that are in the intro picture or whatever, die everyday, comets don’t live long they die all the time. I picked out so many comets every day it’s insane but there isn’t anything to do. Fish die. Now if I saw a dead parakeet or reptile or gerbil/hamster, that’s a whole other story. I replaced filters. There was no reason for that associate to say they don’t do it. You take out the filter put a new one in. The Petsmart I worked at had very clean healthy tanks but the fish die. If they had fin rot we put them in isolation and took care of them.

  • @brierryn
    @brierryn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    As a petsmart employee, I try very very hard to keep up with our store’s tank maintenance and general fish care. The store I work at isn’t as old as that one, but we’re on the same filtration system, and the store I worked at before the one I do now was on a newer system. The newer system is easier to use and do maintenance on when something breaks, but I’ve never had to deal with it breaking before. We clean/change filter socks and pads every single night and are supposed to pull any sick/lethargic fish for treatment as soon as we see them, if one fish has ich, that fish gets treated separately in a quarantine tank and the rest of the fish system is treated with preventative care. There is absolutely no excuse for those tanks to look that way. Like she said, we deep clean specific tanks every day so that each tank is cleaned once a week, but if it’s a Tuesday and one of our Thursday tanks looks anything like any of those tanks, we’re sure as Hell gonna clean it on that Tuesday. I know not every employee feels as strongly about the care and wellbeing of the animals we sell, but there is no reason for those tanks and fish to look so awful.

Either the company doesn’t train the employees or they don’t want to pay for the fish to be in well maintained tanks. Or the company just tells the store “hey, it’s cheaper to just keep buying fish than to maintain the tanks so just forget about it” I work at a chain pet store and we are very limited in what we can do. It’s the company, not the employees.

When I see a store like this it tells me that either they don't know what they are doing or don't care. What's truly disgusting is when I see stores knowingly and willfully selling sick fish. However, to be fair the Petsmart I bought my son's 36 gallon bowfront tank from had a really nice fish section with clean tanks and healthy fish. Unfortunately they appear to be the exception rather than the rule (and that particular sore was 78 miles away from my house so I won't be going back there anytime soon).

    I just found this. I appreciate all you do for these helpless pets. Hope you are still active and on behalf of all fish lovers, I want to say THANK YOU. Nice job.

      The PetSmart by the VA hospital that I frequent every time I have a VA appointment is really nice and the tanks look great! The PetSmart that is not too far from me is like the one in this video. I won’t buy any fish there.

    If you can’t afford new filters then don’t keep fish!

    I hate petshart. Too bad all we have in town is the awful chain pet stores.

    No excuse for this. When I was in charge of my aquatic dept at Petco (since my leaving the company, they have fallen way down the rung on the quality of their stores), my fish tanks were sparkling clean. No algae, no debris, no dead fish left floating in the tanks. Disgusting.

    Wow! They had cleaned up and to a certain point. I guess looking at it counts as cleaning it...

      They probably have one person to clean and he gets called away to help customers in other parts of the store.

    I'm currently applying for aquatic care positions at my local stores in an effort to make a difference in the quality of the care the fish receive. Hoping to share my passion for the life.

    The only way these big chain stores are going to lift their game is by repeated public exposure of their shoddy practices.
    Good work IFG, keep it up!
