  • Local bank DBS is making good on its promise to subsidise five million meals to help people stretch their dollar. Hawkers and diners unaware of the initiative have been pleasantly surprised by the S$3 subsidy. DBS said PayLah! transactions at hawker centres tripled on Feb 10 compared to normal weekdays.

"Subsidies" is just advertising cost for DBS; once everyone gets lock into the system and when there is no turning back, they will start charging you for every transaction.

@@jessicaregina1956 Let me translate for you. What he meant is not all elderly folks are digitally blind. The key thing is going full digital is a double-edged sword. If not careful one may get hurt. And frankly that's very true when I see those media report in how hard working hawkers get scammed even just the price of a meal. All those high opinion about digital transaction must necessarily come from those digital marketeer themselves.

It will spread easy enough in a place like Singapore because it's tiny. There will be a group of people that subscribe to main stream media and come across channels like this and they will be the first to know and use and within days their colleagues and families will know as well.
Spreading news is never hard in Singapore and the people are not stupid either. They know how to use informations to their best interests as well as filter through useless informations.
The highlight here is dbs want to promote one of their service and have a budget for it and instead of using it to pay for commercials they use it to do this instead and you help them out in the process as well. In commercial sense it's mutual beneficial.
If you are asking how come they have budget and money to do this by giving you 3 dollar to eat once every Friday you have to remember they are a bank. Bank earn money from their customers and investments and they can afford to use some of what they earn to do marketing.
