Hi Zee. Thanks for covering our game! The lack of food tokens is a widespread problem that pertains to the first print run. We included 14 more Food Tokens in 2nd print run and then bit the bullet and put another sheet of token in the 3rd print run. So there are now 234 Food Tokens in the game instead of 160.

I JUST bought this game from Target today and it still has only 174 tokens - NOT 234!

Dominic Crapuchettes My copy only has 160 tokens, which do run out depending on player count. Do you guys provide any extra tokens for customers with the 160 token copy? Thx

Thank you for the review. I've been eyeing this game for a while, wondering if it'd be a good game for my nieces to play (ages 7-9). They already kick my rear at Hey, That's My Fish, Cardline, Word on the Street, Catan Junior, etc.; I'm always looking for more games at which they can beat me. I love games that teach strategy that also sneak in some education (looking at you Timeline).

Would you recommend this game for a group who's not necessarily mixed or new, but looking for a lighter game? Would it still intrigue them?

I'd argue that the original version of Evolution is light enough for a casual game group, without needing to cut more stuff out. I had the opportunity to try it out at a trade show, and it took around 5 minutes for everyone to get up to speed on how the game worked. The only issue (if you can call it that) is that having played the game before gives you an advantage over new players, because you know what traits exist in the trait deck, and therefore know what potential abilities may come up. That being said, once everyone's on board, if you want to add more, these guys have given the expansions very favorable reviews.

I own Evolution and it is a very popular game with my group. Would you say this game is different enough to be worth getting, or if I've got the original would I not get enough out of this to make it worth getting?

I wouldn't recommend this as a replacement for Evolution if your gaming group already plays Evolution. I would recommend this if you want to introduce new players to the Evolution brand, if you want a filler, OR if you want a version that's fantastic as a 2-player game.

So would you say that Evolution: The Beginning is better than Evolution (original) as a two-player game?

It would be great if made an expansion with just those things you mentioned Zee. More ways to expand, more ways to creatively eat from the watering hole etc. (please xx)

If a single species has a long neck and fat tissue but is full of food can the excess food be shared among other species population or just that species population?

I don't understand what replaces the part in evolution where you seed the wateringhole.....there is only two food placed each turn? So the most food you could ever get in a turn without being a predator is 2? I'm missing something....

The watering hole produces 2 food tokens on every players turn, so the only way you can have any form of influence is by not eating every food token in it.
Some cards also seems abdurdly powerfull, such as long neck and scavenger since the game seems to have a larger focus on carnivores.

Can a carnivore continue to attack once its population cards are full?

How can we make this 6 players?

There is no references to "Body Size" which makes the original game much richer. This is a game that requires more interactions between traits and other attributes. :) I'm sticking to the original Evolution too. :)

I got this game. it just seems like we're not playing it right. I saw that you only took one population away when your carnivore attacked even though the carnivore population equaled the herbivore being attacked. why didn't they both die? Also. if you only add two food per turn to the water hole, then wouldn't there only ever be two herbivore population per person playing? so what's the point of the card that says this species can eat two per population if you can just give the species another population to eat the two herbs? it also seems like we had a ton of cards in our hand the whole time.

I have and played this many times and believe I have the rules down well. The rules say you only remove one population when it is attacked by a carnivore - which gives two food to the carnivore. The carnivore could, if necessary, continue to attack the same (or another) species for two food per attack until the carnivore species is full. You do only add two food per turn to the water hole. There may be food left over from previous turns or not. We have found this happens frequently when carnivores show up on the scene and there are scavengers around. The fat tissue card should make sense now. If a fat tissue carnivore with population size two, it could attack twice (for two food per attack) because it can eat up to four food. Or a long neck with fat tissue and a population size three could eat three at the start of the turn from the food bank, and then up to three more from the watering hole. I hope this helps.

thank you! this does help a lot. the one question I have is the scavenger card just eats when a carnivore attacks. so how does this help create more food for the watering hole?. just making sure we're playing right. thanks again!
