As Indonesian liberal, i don't think Jokowi has rolled-back liberal laws, the opposite is true, while it's obviously meager compared to western liberal laws, the president has actually supported more personal freedom, for example, people doesn't need to worry some mobs would disturb their activities indoor because idolatry, adultery can only be reported by immediate family, rather than some random rats passes by..
And while president says LGBTQ behavior is not the norm, he say they have the same rights as average Indonesian, which is bold statement for a politician in an era of growing Islamic conservatism.
But I need to agree that democratic values are eroded in his era, but again, put down your western "white-knight" and see our position, dictator Saddam is much better than terrorist Al-Qaeda.

    Chapter 1
The first thing we have to understand is that the western and eastern perspectives are different.
Even though they share the same democratic ideology, America, India and Indonesia have unique democratic systems.
Democracy in these three countries is influenced by local culture and philosophy.
In America, for example, democracy there is strongly influenced by ancient Greco-Roman democracy.
while in Indonesia it is influenced by Indonesian philosophy, especially Javanese philosophy.
In America, it is almost impossible for the election winner, say the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, to appoint his Republican political opponent, Donald Trump, as Minister of Defense.
In Indonesia this can be done. President Jokowi even "entrusted" his eldest son as an apprentice to his arch enemy Prabowo in the previous two elections. Imagine if Joseph Beau Biden become Donald Trumps apprentice.
Prabowo's story itself is like an Asian drama, or a Bollywood movie rather than a Hollywood movie. (Spoiler alert)
Prabowo is the son of the great economist Sumitro. At first Sumitro worked for Sukarno. But when Sukarno (the first president) started to get closer to the communist party, the idealistic Sumitro began to distance himself from Sukarno. Sumitro and his children are liberal economists who are very anti-communist.
When Suharto (the second president) replaced Sukarno, he returned to Indonesia and became the economic architect that made Indonesia a developed country. One of his ideas is to eradicate poverty with education. One of his favorite students and colleagues, namely Prof. Widjojo Nitisastro created the SD Inpres program. all poor children can go to school. This Sumitro and Widjojo construction program was researched by Ester Dufflo and wrote about it in Schooling and Labor Market Consequences of School Construction in Indonesia: Evidence from a Usual Policy Experiment" published in 2000. And Ester Dufflo received the Nobel Prize in 2019.
Sumitro, who is an idealist, educates his children liberally and democratically. Freeing their children to make their own future choices.
Young Prabowo enrolled at the Military Academy. Fell in love with President Suharto's daughter and married. When he graduated from Military Academy, this young officer's first assignment was to fight in Timor Leste. On the front line Prabowo fought against Xanana. The two fight between killed or being killed.
Currently, Xanana and Prabowo meet again, no longer as enemies but as partners in maintaining peace in the Asean region. The same thing with World War 2 veterans between brave American and Japanese soldiers who after the war became friends.
Then some other military duties. As a military officer who obeyed his superiors, Prabowo carried out his duties, including fighting against the independent Aceh movement. In Aceh he fought against Muzakir Manaf, commander of the independent Aceh movement.
Currently Muzakir Manaf is Prabowo's main supporter in the 2024 Presidential election. (Amazing isn't it? Well, that's how we Asians are.).
    ..to be continued chapter 2
    chapter 2
1998 There was a monetary crisis in Asia. Starting from the Thailand currency crisis, it spread to other countries, including Indonesia. What started as a financial crisis turned into a socio-political crisis.
There were voices of dissatisfaction with Suharto. There were riots and the killing and disappearance of several activists opposing Suharto. Suharto fell. Prabowo was fired from the military. His relationship with Suharto's family, including his wife, who was also Suharto's daughter, was fractured. What happened in 1998 leaves some speculation and mystery to this day.
Munir, a well-known human rights activist in Indonesia, conducted an investigation and in interviews during his lifetime stated that Prabowo was not the brain or mastermind of the 1998 riots. It seems that Prabowo was a puppet being played and caught in the sea of fire of the political elite fighting for power. It is true that members of his troops kidnapped several students, but whether they were the masterminds of the 1998 riots is still a mystery.
Habibi, an aircraft engineer and also Suharto's vice president, rose to become the 3rd president.
Habibi held new elections. Abdurahman Wahid well-known as Gusdur was also elected as the 4th President of Indonesia.
Prabowo himself was in a devastated condition. His military career was destroyed, his family was destroyed, he left the country and started a new life from scratch as a civilian and started doing business. Gusdur in one of his interviews on national TV said that Prabowo was a man who sincerely served the country.
The era of reform is rolling. After the riots, Indonesia re-knitted its torn national and state vision. The constitution was amended, improving democracy everywhere. The economy was reorganized. Gusdur focused on national reconciliation.
Even though democratic reform is improving... apparently the political elite, especially in the DPR, is not yet satisfied with fighting. Understandably, Indonesia is still in the learning stage of democracy. Gusdur said that DPR members were like children in kindergarten.
The dispute between Gusdur and the political elite DPR culminated in Gusdur's impeachment as President. (Even though to this day state administration experts are also confused about what mistake Gusdur made?). According to the constitution, the vice president is Megawati, the daughter of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno. Megawati rose to become the 5th president.
To prevent Gusdur's incident from happening again, where the legislative power of the DPR was too strong compared to the President, the constitution was again amended. The President is directly elected by the people.
In 2004, for the first time, the President was elected directly by the people using a one man one vote system. Susilo Bambang Yudoyono, known as SBY, the former Minister of Megawati, was elected by the people to become the 6th President. At this time, Prabowo returned to Indonesia as a businessman and started a political career.
    ...to be.continued in chapter 3
    Chapter 3
In 2008 Prabowo founded a new political party, the Gerindra Party. Gerindra consistently remained in opposition to the government until 2019.
SBY (former commander of United Nation peace keeping Army) has been trusted by the people for 10 years. According to the constitution, the president has a maximum power of 2 x 5 years. SBY can no longer run for president. It is certain that in 2014 Indonesia will have a new President.
In 2014 Prabowo ran as a presidential candidate against a furniture business carpenter from the city of Solo. Joko Widodo, better known as JOKOWI.
Jokowi is an ordinary person, not a general nor an elite political party figure. In contrast to Prabowo, he is a general with Javanese royal blood, the son of an Indonesian minister and economist, and the former son-in-law of the president.
On the other hand, Jokowi is a commoner. He started his political career as mayor of Solo. His success in Solo became the talk of the town which led him to the Governor of Jakarta. Together with Ahok as deputy governor, they both received praise from the people for bureaucratic reform and infrastructure development.
The battle between Jokowi and Prabowo is very heated. Indonesia is divided into two. Jokowi represents the plebs and Prabowo represents the patricians.
Jokowi won and was elected as the 7th president. Prabowo and his supporters did not seem to accept defeat.
In 2019 they fight again. So tight. Once again Jokowi won. Prabowo still not accept defeat.
Unexpectedly, It is not like American democracy where Joe Biden and his supporters celebrated victory by mocking Trump supporters, Jokowi actually approached Prabowo and invited him to join the cabinet of ministers. (I've spilled it before, this is Asia, not the West).
2024 Prabowo runs again, this time accompanied by the eldest son of his former arch enemy. Gibran, Jokowi's eldest son, is the mayor of Solo.
Gibran qualified as a vice presidential candidate after the controversial decision of the constitutional court (MK) which limited the age of a vice president to 40 years. The Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, who is also Gibran's uncle, approved the age limit as long as Gibran had experience in government.
Apparently there is a legal loophole that has not been anticipated by the legislature and is being exploited cleverly by Jokowi. Even though it doesn't violate the law, this is a serious violation of ETHICS. It is homework for the legislature elected in 2024 to fix these legal loopholes.
Despite the controversy over the vice president and the constitutional court, Prabowo apparently won the election with almost 60% of the vote. This is actually easy to predict considering that people see Prabowo getting the green light to continue Jokowi's legacy. Jokowi himself will retire with a level of popular satisfaction (approval rating) almost 80%, the highest among heads of state throughout the world, beating Xi Jinping, Putin and Joe Biden.
    ...to be continued chapter 4
    Chapter 4
Prabowo will almost certainly become the 8th President with the son of his former enemy as vice president.
His success team is full of former opponents both on the battlefield such as Muzakir Manaf, warlord of the Aceh movement, human rights activist from Papua Natalius Pigai and former 1998 student activists such as Andi Arief and Budiman Sudjatmiko... who were once opposed and hostile to Prabowo are now the main supporters Prabowo. (I told you this is Asia)
    That's Prabowo's story.
Maybe his life story is no less than the novel by George RR Martin... but if I were allowed to summarize in 1 sentence about Prabowo...
Prabowo is Saul from Tarsus who is trying to transform into Saint Paul.
    time will tell...
