Jeep Mod / Wrangler JK Sidemarker Light / Turn Signal Conversion - SIMPLE!

  • In just a few minutes, make your Jeep Wrangler JK fender flare mounted side markers blink with your turn signal. Unlike the "single wire" method, this will work even when your headlights/parking lights are off.
    -Simply splice the two wires from the side-marker (one white with green line and one black) into two wires from the turn signal (one white and one white with green line). It doesn't matter which wire from the side-marker is spliced to the white or white with green line from the front turn signal.
    Once done, they will be off when your lights are off, on steady when your lights are on, but will blink when you turn on the turn signal on that side either way. If you do have your lights on, the side marker on that side will blink alternately with the turn signal.
    Other methods I've seen result in the side markers only working as blinkers if your headlights or parking lights are on. Doing it the way I've done here is no more difficult and will retain all functionality of the side marker, but is not dependent upon your headlights or parking lights being on.

    Just did this on my '17 and it worked great! I used wire splicers so I didn't need to cut any wires, just disconnected the plug for the side markers and jumped the wires to the turn signals.
    Thanks for the great video!

    I just did this mod and matched the white green to the white/yellow and the black to the white/red wire. The side mark blinks are synched with the actual blinker blinks. I just shaved off the plastic around the wires so I didn't have to cut two of them. Wrapped with electrical tape, works perfectly. Thanks Tommy!

    I just did this on my 2017 Jeep Wrangler. Works and it took me about 30-minutes. Very happy with the look. Awesome instructions. Very easy to follow! Thanks for this!

    Thanks for the great info. Just did this today on my 2014 JK Unlimited Rubicon. It worked fine, but DON'T USE THE CRIMP-TYPE CLIPS on the wires. Instead, SOLDER SOLDER SOLDER! These are connections that are exposed to the elements.
    Crimp clips may not be terribly reliable (e.g. may get corrosion, or if water pushes the wires at a funny angle or they get stressed for example when disconnecting the front marker lights to remove the grill) they may lose connection, and from a safety perspective the last thing you want is to have some of your lights not working. Even if taped up nicely when using crimps, moving the wires could cause a connection failure. This is not the case if you solder the connections, which is vastly more reliable.

    I did this on my 2018 jku 4dr sport. I can confirm that it works the same way as the video. Plus that I swapped out the bulbs with non polarized 168 led bulbs and they work just the same. (Just make sure they are short enough) No resistors needed because there is no hyperflashing. Can't say if it will work with those flower aftermarket replacements but should. Apparently the two wire method is superior to the one wire in more ways than one. Great going bro!

    Did this modification yesterday on my 2012 Ruby and it worked great. Took off the grill for easier access. One note to whomever does this, I left about an inch of wire on the plug that goes to harness coming off side marker which left me shorter wires when spliced them to the turn signal wires. This made a tight fit when I reinstalled both turn signal and side marker light into their housing. Everything worked great but I may splice some wire extensions to the side marker wires next time i have to change the bulbs or try and re-route them so they wont be so tight.
    Other than that doing this Mod I feel safer letting on coming traffic know when I am turning, especially in the city traffic.
    Thanks for the awesome demo, made this easy....

    Just to keep everyone informed, I just did this to my 2016 Willy's and there are no problems at all. The Clips are a real pain unless you pull the red locking tab all the way out. It took longer to get the tape off than to do the mod itself. Excellent job Tommy Wise and thank you

    Thanks for the video, everything work out great, as an added bonus, the original side marker connection makes the perfect tie-in for led running lights under the running boards.

    Thank You so much for this informative video! I never understood why the Side Marker was never a blinker from the Factory. I just did this Mod and also replaced the Side a Marker Bulb with a LED Bulb for even brighter light output.

    Yes sir, I made sure before I stuck my foot in my mouth. I watched your video, to see how your lights worked, mind you I had already just finished the soldering the one wire method, and the lights work exactly the same as yours do, with lights on or off. I have a 2013 Rubicon, and not sure if something changed or not.

    Klockarsm, it won't make a difference. The two wires from the side marker just need to be spliced to the two non-black wires going to the front turn signal. I tested and it made no difference which went to which.

    I'm confused, the one wire method seems to work exactly the way you have it. I did the one wire method this evening and blinker works exactly the same way yours seems to with only connecting one wire. Please correct me if I am incorrect. .

    With a aftermarket Led lights it blinks in tandem with front marker lights when the headlights are off but if you turn on the head lights only the fender lights blink and the front ones doesnt.

    Tommy,
    Thanks for the post.. very informative. Looking to do this on my '13 jku this weekend. I was wondering where you got the clamp splices/wire clamps from?

    • @tommywise3965
      @tommywise3965  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mrpage, how'd the mod go? I'm curious whether the '13 worked like my '12 did. I think a couple of people with '13's had issues but couldn't remember if it was because of other factors like using LED's, etc. BTW, I got everything from a big bag of stuff I've accumulated over the years from re-doing trailer lights, etc. Lowe's or anywhere like that should have what you need, though.

    • @mrpage22
      @mrpage22 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy Wise The mod went well. I was not concerned with keeping the stock sidemarker/parking light functionality; I simply wanted the turn signla to work whether or not the headlights/parking lights were on or off. No issues at all. Thanks again!

  • @Cav4346
    @Cav4346 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey I'm really interested in your method because i would like to keep the same functions of the lights. The other videos have you splice the black wire from the side marker with the white/green wire going into the turn signal plug. Its hard to see how you have the wires spliced if you can tell me how i would greatly appreciate it.

    • @tommywise3965
      @tommywise3965  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Simply disconnect side marker light and cut off the connector leaving as much wire to route to the blinker as possible. Next, splice those two wires into the two LIGHT COLOR (NOT BLACK) wires going to your front turn signal lights... that's it. I recommend soldering, but the fold-over clamp style splice that I used work well. Just tape it up to protect and secure the splice. Always test before taping and buttoning things back up completely.

    Hi:
    I’m in Greece and my JK side marker lights are also blinkers from the factory. I guess this is for the Euro spec JKs.
    My question is how can I make my turn signal to work also as a marker when my parking lights are on?

  • @tommywise3965

    I've had several ask about using LED lights. I don't have LED's but have read that they will require a resistor in the circuit to make them work correctly (not "hyper-flash"). There are a couple of videos out there on it.

  • @donnaarellano5552

    • @tommywise3965
      @tommywise3965  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Donna Arellano, I think it'll need a resistor somewhere in the circuit to reduce down to the low wattage of the led's... I haven't done it, but I have talked to a couple of people who have and the process is the same, but you have to get the resistor in there that will work based on your led's specs.

    I tried this on my '09 & it didn't work. My blinkers are working fine, but the fender markers don't light up (or blink ) at all. The only things that I can think of are
    1) Did the clamps just not bite correctly?
    2) Is it possible that the wiring pairing makes a difference for '09s?
    I'll fiddle around more with this tomorrow, but any other advice / tips are welcome.
    Thanks!

    • @tommywise3965
      @tommywise3965  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Curtis Schmidt, I'm hearing from some folks that it will. I have to say that wiring can be tricky but it's just wires! Knowing I could splice anything I cut, I just went to town and tested each step with a cheap multimeter. I had all connections just twisted together to see if it'd work before making final connections. Worst could happen was I blew a fuse or a light bulb... but that's just me!

    Hi Tommy. Can you achieve this same thing with the Trail Rated Badge lights (from Badge Glow dot com?) I just bought two badge glow lights (I have badges on both sides) and I'd like them to do exactly what you have done here with the fender markers. Thoughts?

    • @tommywise3965
      @tommywise3965  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Orlando Torres, It'll work, but I think the issue would be if the lights you are going to use are different specs, then there will be additional considerations, i.e. wattage used, type (led's need a resistor), etc.

  • @TechnoGrayAura

    I followed your method, but the side marker only blinks when the lights are turned on. If the lights are off and the turn signal is on, the side marker does nothing. Thoughts?

    • @tommywise3965
      @tommywise3965  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZP, not sure what the deal with that is. If you splice both marker wires into the two non-black wires going to the turn signal, it should work. I don't doubt your handiwork, but may wanna check it out to make sure you did NOT use the black signal that was already going to your turn signal.

    • @TechnoGrayAura

      Nope. The white and black side marker wires we're spliced into the white front turn signal wires only on my 2014 JKU. Nothing looks any different than your setup.

      Zero Point It's been talked about on some forums that I've looked at that this mod, whether it be the single wire mod, or the double wire mod like in this video, do not work on the 2014 or newer JKU's. Something changed in the wiring harness that doesn't play nice with this sweet mod, unfortunately :(

    1 wire method works exactly the same as the 2 wire method . you are just doing more work . if the 1 wire method does not work it I because you wired it wrong .
