    I used to operate and set up screw machines back in the 90s. We had run two machines and set up a third at the same time. Plus we had to sharpen and make our own cutting tools for all positions, and hand grind our drill bits on a bench grinder to hold a tolerance of .002 max runout all for $7.42 a hour. I started at $3.50 in the secondary operation department then moved in screw machine department, that took me $5.50 a hour. I liked operating the equipment but I left to learn CNCs. That paid $7.80 a hour.

      I also ran screw machines in the 90's. One thing that stands out in my memories: First thing in the morning cleaning the chips from tho oil sump and rinsing my arms and hands with solvent followed by drying my arms with compressed air. The oil was too hot for cleaning the sump during a work day. Looking back, I don't know why rubber gloves weren't provided to us for that task.

    I setup and operated those screw machines for 29.5 years. Finally moved on to a job operating lathes and bridgeport milling machines. Out of the hot oily job to a clean airconditioned job, nine years later I retired. Running six machines! Must have been a very simple and slow running job.

    Set up pays the best; operator, depending on experience and mechanical ability. Plus you are on your feet all shift keeping watch on the automatic operation and checking parts, stocking the feeds. One operator should be able to maintain two machines at once, no sweat.

    No Eminem soundtrack when I visited some Screw Machine factories in the 1960s... But they provided their own version of rap music! ;-)
    I'm surprised that the pictures don't show anyone wearing ear protection... or maybe today's machines are somehow magically quieter.

      I ran screw machines in the 90's and your comment about providing their own version of rap music made me laugh. The sound of the bar stock spinning in the tubes was deafening for sure! We shoved 2 sets of ear plugs in our ears and we yelled while face to face with coworkers but still had to read lips to get a message across. These were good time though.

      Was training on miyano as well but those things can't hold many programs and I'm not a programmer. Then covid hit, saw most of the people getting fired. Only a few left. Aviation went down hill for manufacturing.

    I'm a former cnc machinist. Do you think cnc machinists can easily transfer over to learning how to run a screw machine?

    • @walterpeebles295
      @walterpeebles295 หลายเดือนก่อน

      why would you want to? screw machines are oily and noisy. cnc can run more complex parts. If you like working on autos you might like them. They are 20th century technology.

    quite a video, the job shop experience. The machine is brainless, cams driven off a drumshaft, its the set up person who needs the brain.

    how much do these job pay?

    • @Golfing422
      @Golfing422 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      First Last Usually around 12 or so in the beginning and as high as 25+ per hour plus OT to a person who has the ability to solve problems, repair, layout. A guy who is constantly stumped isn't worth much and that's the majority so if a set up guy is beyond average in intelligence, he will never be short on money or out of work. Job shops are really blowing up with lots of work right now. To learn a person must be a self starter and also me mechanically inclined plus have the motivation. Smart, motivated, and not afraid to get dirty, a rare combination these days.

    • @Golfing422
      @Golfing422 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First Last Its great job security as well if you are good at this job. a skilled guy who doesn't struggle can have unlimited work and make six figures if he likes to work. Problem is there are too many 20 year veterans who think they are good but cant do didly. Years experience doesn't mean jack if a guy is dumb so I never pay based on that alone because its meaningless.
