    Glad to see that you are still “employing” the Brownies. And a belt driven to boot(brave man). I’ve been a Screw Machinist for 30+ and am in charge of setup and maintenance of 20 of them. They are amazing and frustrating machines. Hope you are still using them.

      I went ahead and bought one of these machines about a year ago, read through the manual on how to set them up. I still dont feel comfortable cutting cams for them. I'd be elated if you could refer me to someone who could provide training or something! Thanks!

    I haven't seen any mention of Somma Tools. That's where we got virtually all of our Browne and Sharpe tooling. They can even hook you up to have Cams made so you can optimize your production. You send them a part with associated drawings and they send you a cycle time, a list of required tooling and quotes for the whole kit and cabootle... at least they did in 2003, when I left that job. good luck and keep the videos coming... he said after he realized the video he was responding to was 17 months old.

    First quick tip: As you disassemble, keep a 5 gallon bucket half filled with old machining oil handy. And some containes, wire baskets, etc. As you take things off the machine, in the oil they go, overnight, or over months. This will loosen all that greasy gunk you kave all over your hands. Then cleaning is easier. Avoid putting greasy gunk back in your machines, it only attracts more greasy gunk, dirt, rust, etc.

    I started out in 1977 learning to setup 2G and 0G world war 2 production brownies in a gear factory in Massachusetts. I bought an idle 0G for 500.00 back then. I knew a guy with a screw machine shop and told him about it. He came to the gear shop, checked it out, handed me 1000.00 and he moved it out of there. Big quick money in those days! Next shop about 1979 worked 00 and 00Gs some with turner overhead belt drives. One was from 1916. The owner of the shop bought it and replaced the spindle bearings and that thing would run nonstop with no issues! Amazing machinery from “ back in the day”!!

    I ran some Brown & Sharp screw machines back in the 1970's.
    The cutting tool cut multiple diameters at the same time & had to be sharped occasionally on a surface grinder - using a small steel ruler/scale to visually line up the cutting surface with the top of the center mounting hole of cutter.
    Some had turrets.
    They had automatic feed that would load a new bar & occasionally the pushed had to be hammerd to grip the part better.
    Sometimes it would be hard to get all the diameters on part to be within tolerance.
    I was young & decided to find another occupation.
    The shop had Acme Gridley's, Brown & Sharpes, Davenports & the adjoining company had New Britain's.
    Did you know that Mr. Gridley started the New Britain Company.
    He retired in his fifties & got bored, so he started New Britain, so i have read.

      As A Brownie lifer, I can tell you B&S had an excellent library concerning their machines from the G series to the Ultramatics, cam and tool design, set up and maitenance. I luched out growing up a few miles from their Providence, RI location, then years later took some classes at the newer North Kingston facility. Outstanding machines, tough, reliable. It took years to collect all the books and as a guy who likes to read anyway, they made all the difference.

    Since you're using a flat belt, I recommend taking the pin out and flipping one side of the end 180 degree's, and re-inserting the belts pin. This will form a mobius strip, allowing the belt to run on both faces and doubling the contact area of the belt, in effect doubling the life of the belt. I was taught this trick by an OLD machinist that worked on farms back in the early 20th century and in machineshops that were old when he was starting out his career as a machinist that were still using overhead lineshafts on all their machines.

    • @MopedProblems
      @MopedProblems  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of these were built around the time of WWII. People who had factory space could put B&S machines in their buildings at government expense, then gradually learn how to put them to work making things for the war effort. When the war ended, the US sold them to these shops for $1.00 a piece.

      Glad you appreciate these machines! I am working on several episodes, covering everything. For the cams, We have a CNC plasma cutter, so it’s done in house. Following the charts and cam design booklet Ive been able to get the ball park, but Lots of trial and error... so its a good thing we can design and make them on the fly. I’ll have a video covering the cam making as well.

    You will have to shorten your belt from the motor to the driving shaft a few times i wouldn't sweat it til it sarts falling off.
    I have not worked with any machines that are belt driven at the transmission like yours. All of our G style machines are chain driven. Cant wait to get my own machine.

      @MopedProblems  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the next video, I make a heavy duty belt tensioner. (Couldn’t get myself to shorten the belt again). I don’t know the exact date on these models, but they are later than most i have seen running. Sometime from the 1940’s i believe.

      it sounds like it may just need a new starter cap. But even better, find a free treadmill in any condition so long as the motor works, salvage the motor out and the motor controller (all of them are practically the same model and lotsa support online) and you got yourself a free 1-3hp motor with true variable speed control!
