I ran davenport for over 25 years before I retired if you can master them you can run any machine I would like to see the new ones to see what they can do

Man I'd love to tour that place. I ran Davenport B machines 20yrs ago at 19yrs old. Today I'm in a wildly different career as a chemical process engineer in the nuclear field but I'm recognized as very unique at my workplace because I'm every bit as comfortable in the machine shop running a manual lathe and mill as I am in the non-rad laboratory performing typical benchtop chemistry or handling dozens of curies of radioactive material in hot cells. My fundamental understanding of machining goes back to those Davenport days.

Ran, setup and fixed them for 11 years. Can't beat the volume they can produce. Just make sure you have a steady supply of uniforms.

You have a wonderful looking company that so much reminds me of Warner & Swasey Cleveland TMD, that I worked at in the mid 70's thru 80's...Thanks for posting!

I am a manual machinist in N.E. Ohio and I run a 1940's Warner & Swasey No. 3 (in addition to a Colchester engine lathe, Bridgeport mill, and K&T mill) on a daily basis and it still is going strong despite it being a nearly 80 year old machine. Mad respect for the guys who made these machines, top quality in my opinion.

I spent 30 plus years on B&S machines, a few more on Acmes, never ran a single part on Davenports, but they were in nearly every shop I worked in. I have also run 2nd operations on Davenport made products. The guys complained about them, I'm not sure why. My question is, are the new hybrids CNC controlled on spindle speeds? B&S advertised CNCs before they went under, but they were NC controlled tool movements, but they kept the same transmissions instead of going to servo motors. This held them back although it was other problems not related to their machines that put them out of business. My second question is the older machines often went down because of what the guys called bronze spindle bushings. Has Davenport gone to more conventionall ball or roller bearings?
As a side note, one shop I was in made, I believe, chuck levers for Davenports. Fascinating part. About 22 operations to make them. But the poor economy years ago doomed that company.

Are you saying the younger generation is not competent to run an old machine? 26 years old and setting up B&S 00g, 2g, No.2, No.3.

No, not at all! B&S is a great machine!! Just trying to make it easier to attract a newer generation of user who are very comfortable in a digital age.

@@davenportmachine I learned NC programming on B&S Bandit controlled machines long befor I learned how to turn a computer on. Yes the youngsters are better prepared now to handle CNC. Some of them, like some of my generation have become capable of handling the hands on approaches nedded to run conventional machines. Find the kids that can do both, hire them, never let them go.

Cnc application kinda set the pace for an overall cycle time. Kinda defeats the purpose of the model B.

The machines with the Noise-Tamer enclosures are much quieter.
