  • Dennis Deep Cuts #34 Today I am having a conversation with someone who's married to a record collector. My fantastic wife Hilda Heller.
We also talk about her music and she gives us a list of her favourite records from her Record Collection. It's a fun conversation that might provide some insight into the life of a nerd like me.

Love this! My husband and I are your opposites. I got him into vinyl and he has a small record collection now. Thank you for sharing your picks, Hilda! And thank you for your behind the scenes work on DDC. Hope to catch you with INVSN in October!

I got about 2000 vinyl albums and 400 CDs. It takes up so much space already and honestly I don't find the time to listen to all the vinyl and fall back on mp3s of all these records. Plus they get increasingly expensive, especially as the hardcore/punk scene gets bigger and bigger. Catching up with the past somehow never ends. You always think it will but it does not.

Haha, I recognize so much of myself and my relationship in this. I was (and sitll am) the vinyl nerd in the relationship and initially I worried that how I engage with music might push her away. Vinyl is a very nerdy hobby after all. Over time Melissa has definitely figured out where to find the records in my collections that she enjoys hearing and she'll either pick them out by hand or she'll tell me which band, which record (by description of the cover) or which music to put on. The last one is by description of "yeah, don't play that one that's blue and cloudy (the newest Drain record) but play something that's like it that I'll enjoy. She tells me I know how to distill what she wants to hear while hanging out without making it explicit. Love is amazing. Music is great. I hope that INVSN will come to the Nethelrands so that we can both come out to see you.
Congratulations on the marriage you both, by the way

    Nice, cozy and familiar 🙂
I do not have 13000 vinyl but is an avid music lover and a focused vinyl collector. I am also a comic book lover just like Mr. Danzig and I often meet vinyl nerds, musicians and music lovers that have other collections. Like comics, artists, stamps, instruments, 50´s stuff, art, beer bottles, teddy bears, well, you get what I mean. If Hilda thought Dennis apartment looked like a museum, I have my suspicions 😂
So, do you two have any other collecting passions?

Records. Books and art being enough I think. 😀

The last time I moved it took two full truck loads to move it here. Then I bought a collection that took two full truck loads.

I thought a record collector is married to his records 😂 .... i never understood that ahh you have to have your own sort System instead of standard A-Z ... i would never find my what i'm Looking for without A-Z and also with that System i offen forget about records that i'm suprised and i love that to find records in my own collection that i'm suprised of because i haven't thought of them in years .. but Well, my idea always was to have my own Personal record store 😅 at least it Looks like one and there are probably a lot of record stores with less vinyl for sale then we have on our shells

Hope this is not overstepping a boundary but how worried are you about a house fire or burglary? It feels like insurance would cover only the financial aspect but not the emotional aspect. Lee Scratch Perry's (second?) studio fire in Switzerland some years back comes to mind. I remember him being really devastated but fortunately he kept going for a few more years.
Also, when decorating the house with records, trinkets and pictures, how do you make sure the person cleaning for example is careful not to damage the record sleeves with wet cloths? It is really rare to find another person that cares about items at the same level as yourself...

We have a special insurance for the records. But of course that’s always a worry.
And I clean the house myself so that’s not a problem. :)
