- The last male northern white rhino has died, leaving only two females to save the species from total extinction.
Sudan, the 'gentle giant' who lived on the Ol Pejeta conservancy in Kenya, was put down on Monday after the pain from a degenerative illness became too great. He is survived only by his daughter and granddaughter

No doubt one of the saddest episodes in the history of nature and the worst side of humanity.
If anything, it's another chapter of the unnecessary need/greed for supposed profit by poachers - at least the legacy of "Sudan" has been continued through the one offspring (a daughter) through a companion.
Long may it continue, along with government projects and programs that protect endangered species - kudos/full respect to all involved in performing such duties.
Anthony Lewis I agree but the poachers are just bit players here, China is the vortex for all of this why just blame the poachers,? many are poor and are paid a pittance they do not earn huge money the buyers do! And the gang ring leaders but who profits the most are the Chinese. Without CHINESE demand these beautiful creatures will still be with us. This won’t sadly be the last headline re extinction as they won’t stop.

BTW.... Word from back home, and in the news, is that China is slowly taking over Africa.
To save the species, I would have rounded up as many Rhinos as possible and bread them in captivity where poachers would not be able to get to them. desperate measures have to be taken in desperate situations.

If you're over 20, you've already seen over a dozen go extinct, just not ones we'd care to talk about... like Pinta Tortoise of the Galapagos islands, Formosan Clouded Leopard, Caribbean Monk Seal, West African Black Rhinoceros, Christmas Island Pipistrelle, Madagascar Hippopotamus, Yangtze River Dolphin... we could keep going back about 50 years and cover another 60 or so. If you are healthy, you'll see many more.
I feel so helpless and saddened. I'm trying to remember so many people work so hard to do right by nature and the environment. It's too important to give up on!

Rhino horn is used as aphrodisiac by chinese herbalist doctors for randy rich chinese guys, the guards for these animals are sometimes attacked and killed to get to the rhino horn more expensive than platinum.

and the planet could not support them all if they all remained

not every species can survive forever
extinction is a part of evolution... its not our duty to protect every species
its ok if humans make some animals extinct, its unavoidable as the human population explodes and needs more resources and land.
we dont need every last species to survive... we can farm what we need and keep most in captivity for study and medical use...
theres no need for millions of wild animals to roam free when the planet is over populated and getting worse
And animals living in the wild generally suffer far worse and live shorter lives than in the wild, with no protection from disease and each other...

I am extremely!! upset, and devastated by this news about Sudan passing away. I pray that the scientists can somehow do something that will work, and that the a male will be born called 'Lazarus'...... I hope all Rhino poachers rot in hell, including ANYONE associated with Rhino Horn trade. I am very emotional right now sorry. I was born in Africa, and chose the Rhino from the Big 5 as my favourite, my Daughter chose the Lion.
