Fun fact, the fire danger sign shown there will likely soon be replaced with the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System which is an effort to nationally standardise the signage and reduce its complexity. Last New Year's Eve, Melbourne cancelled the official fireworks show due to the pandemic. A bunch of us were in a park in Brunswick watching the city from the hill, everyone was counting down and then there was an awkward silence after "Happy New Year"... until we saw about 6 illegal fireworks shows including one guy at the corner of the park on the basketball half court lighting off quite an impressive illegal firework show! That was more fun than going to the city for the official ones!

Lol, depending on how dedicated the group is, you can go through fireworks pretty fast.
I visited friends in India during their new year’s celebration years ago.
They had about 10 cubic metres of fireworks boxes for the night, for a fairly small family party. Some of them were pretty big, but there were still hundreds, for a group of around 20 people. All were used up during the night between about 10pm and 3am. It’s wild, strongly recommend it as a time to visit, there are fireworks going off all over the place, in the streets, for days straight. Was a bit of a shock for us few from Melbourne though, we each set off a couple, before deciding we liked our thumbs and eyebrows and just settled back to watch. 😂

I'm an ex-pat Territorian and as a kid growing up in Darwin absolutely loved firecracker night, even though visibility on the roads was limited to just a few meters due to the thick pall of smoke that hung in the air, the small spot fires throughout the city because it was the driest month of the year (middle of the Dry Season!), lost dogs that fled in terror, and even one year in which over 200 people were admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital for burns related injuries! Firecracker night rocked!
My favourite fireworks were the ones that had the little parachutes in them; it was a competition amongst me and my friends to see who could retrieve the most parachutes.

I'm old enough to remember celebrating Guy Fawkes night here in Australia. Huge bonfires in the middle of the street and fireworks everywhere. I used to have a lot of fun with penny bangers, catherine wheels, roman candles etc. Being a typical teenager with my friends we were throwing crackers over a womans back fence when unexpectedly she came out to confront us. I had a cracker ready to throw and of course it went off in my hand. The woman stating she hoped it hurt, me of course saying no I didn't. Which was a huge lie, it hurt like hell but I didn't want to show weakness. Miss those days. Australia is over policed where one can't take a risk. I've travelled to Asia where fireworks are everywhere, especially China, the UK and USA were they're not banned and Europe where they are restricted in some nations

I live in Melbourne. I remember as a kid in the 70s that we used to let off fireworks on Guy Fawkes night. My Mum was very worried about our safety when Dad was about to set them off. She would shield us with a rubbish bin lid (one of the old metal ones). We holidayed in Hawaii a few years ago and happened to be there for the 4th of July. I was very tempted by a big box of fireworks in a supermarket that was selling for about $60. But my kids talked me out of it. On the night, there was an official fireworks display, but dozens of people were randomly setting off fireworks as well. This included kids barely old enough to run who would light them and hold them in their hand and only throw them at the last second. I was amazed that their parents let them run around doing that. I was cringing a bit, just hoping that no little kid would blow their hand off. Thankfully, it never happened.

I love how the date wasn't changed because Guy Fawkes was trying to carry out an assassination attempt; no, it was changed because the date was mainly tied to England

We went up from Sydney this year to Darwin for Cracker night. It really is so much fun and it's so layed back up there. It's a real shame that because of a few idiots, most Australians can't be trusted with fireworks. I love that the NT hasn't (yet) got full nanny state and taken away these freedoms like the rest of the country. NT has a different attitude to the rest of the country. If you have an accident with the crackers the people up there aren't going to sue the world like in the southern states. They are still legal in NZ and basically every other developed nation. Cracker night in Darwin really bought back memories for my dad who used to buy them as a child before they were banned in NSW.

I have so many memories of cracker night and going to buy tom thumbs and penny bungers (?) in the sixties and early seventies.and having a bonfire. One of those memories is a neighbour who lost part of his hand and two that lost eyes using crackers.

I grew up near Canberra in the 90s and fireworks were readily available by popping across the border into the ACT. I have fond memories of fireworks in the backyard. It’s a shame a few irresponsible tossers have ruined the fun.

@1:44 Hey Julian, Jervis Bay Territory would like to have a word - if you meant internal territories.
As would: Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory, Coral Sea Islands, Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, if you include external territories.

It's weird that fireworks being illegal isn't a standard thing and that you need to specify that they are considered explosives because if they were considered explosives elsewhere then they would be illegal
Back home there were a few houses that would randomly light some fireworks at any time of night and they may only light one or a few very quickly so nobody got footage to prove they lit fireworks and the police didn't get involved. There currently still is someone selling fireworks in a carpark down the road supplying everyone with their annoying as fuck colourful lights that people think is more important than it is to not piss off people and wildlife.

The fire danger rating sign needs changing. It's absurd that normal everyday circumstances should warrant a rating of "high". Why should anyone listen to the fire department if they're always crying "wolf"?
