  • Full disassembly and reassembly of a Asahi Optical Company (Pentax) Super-Takumar 55mm f2 lens. Lens is disassembled down to access the optics, diaphragm, mechanical components, and body sections.
    This lens is pretty easy to repair. You can access the diaphragm quickly and remove it fully from the lens for cleaning. It does use a few cheaper components, mainly a thin metal strip glued in place for the focusing indicators, but this is only a very minor annoyance.
    Full time of video was around 30 minutes.

    Stunningly clear and intelligible instructions. Thank You!

    This is the first version of the Super-Takumar, which has the aperture ring direction reversed. Subsequent iterations may have significant design changes.

    Impossible to get that front section with the face plate off.

    Thank you for these instructives, they're paving the way for my baptism into lens repair. So much quality gear out there that can be restored if you just take that step and open up the lens. I'm still wary about opening up the sticking 80mm Zeiss Planar for my Hasselblad though. I don't see any oil and I suspect it may be a mechanical spring problem perhaps. Buying cheap lenses here and there and opening them up is one thing.
    I just cannot factor in the cost some people are charging to have it CLA'd simply because it's a Hasselblad lens. Probably the worst investment I've made in camera terms. Bronica SQ-A would have been the way to go. Same size, half the price, just as great lenses.

    Just finished re-glue the focus indicator ring on my lens. All good now.
    I can see with my lens, also a Super Takumar 55mm/f2, the black part holding the name ring constructed differently. Disassembly has to be not the same as show in this video.

    Just got the same lens, only unknowingly I got the radiocative version. Wanted to try and fix the iris, tried to unscrew the top black ring as you said, it doesn't come off. Any suggestion? Thanks

      if you see a amber hue to the glass its doped and is radioactive

    • @dzava
      @dzava 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      whats the serial number of your lens? Because these early ones shouldnt be radioactive - they were made up to 1963 and then the newer ones (with the red diamond instead of red dot) started to put thorium since 1965 (S/N 1750 000 and up)

    Does the front element have two lenses in it like the rear element? if so, how do I get it opened. I see two spanner notes but it seams like its seized up. I don't want to force it open, especially is its only one lens in the element. Thanks for the informative video.

    Thank you for your video. I will follow to fix my lens. As you said many of this model have the focusing indicator unglued. That happened to mine. Would you recommended which type of glue for re-glue the focus ring please? I would appreciate it.

    Great video I just got an Asahi Pentax S3 with an Auto Takumar 55 1.8 which seems to use an identical construction. My copy has a sticky diaphragm so I believe your video will be very useful! You have a very nice spanner wrench may I ask where you got it?

    Hi! If I want to declick the diaphragm, I just need to remove the little ball? Does it work on a super multi coated version of all takumar lens? Thank you for your video!

    Hi there! Thanks for the great informative videos unlike many others I have seen! I was wondering if you could do a video on the disassembly of a Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4? I would really appreciate it because I haven't found any good one online :/

    Hi, I my problem is - the lens (exact the same except its 1.8) is always in auto mode whether the lever is on the M or A it doesnt matter. The lever moves but the mode doesnt change.
    As I zoomed the lens up front I could see from the rear element tiny gap inside and I saw one spring that should be attached to a screw (just like the on at 8:01 located at 12 o'clock) could this be the problem? Or what could possibly cause it? Is there any way to repair it? Thank you :)

    Hey, I have a carl zeiss jena pancolar 50mm f/1.8 with a broken aperture (occasionally it works), do you have this lens and could you do a disassembly on it? I'm a complete noob and would like and try and fix it myself. I already opened it up (just the back plate) and everything seems to look fine so I'm guessing the blades are just sticky or something.

    Nice! Can you tell me to what degree the internals of this lens correlate to other Super Takumars? I've got a 50/1.4 and a 35/3.5. I also have SMC Takumars, but the internal construction of those is going to be somewhat different due to their ability to meter open and the addition of an aperture linkage etc. I suspect their internals are more like those of the Pentax K mount lenses.

    I have the 55mm f/1.8, I think it's pretty the same. My problem is that the aperture ring is stuck, it doesn't rotate! The auto/manual control works but the aperture is stuck between the f/5.6 and the f/8 setting. What do I have to do?

    • @Mattbierner
      @Mattbierner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try taking apart the lens to determine the root cause. If the aperture does not move at all, even when you try triggering it directly, then you'll need to try disassembling it to address that.
      More likely however is that there is some sort of mechanical problem with your lens. Try taking the lens apart until you can move the aperture, then put it together step-by-step to identify where things stop working. Without looking at your lens, I cannot say exactly what is wrong with it but hopefully this video will help you work through it on your own

      @wreford07 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you see a very very tiny pin on the back of the lens? this must be pressed in (with e.g. a flat knife blade?)... only when the pin is depressed can the auto/manual switch be moved to manual.

    Does the fact that this lens has thorium in its element concern you?

    • @Mattbierner
      @Mattbierner  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Unless you plan on crushing the optics into a fine powder and snorting it, I wouldn't be too concerned.

    • @dzava
      @dzava 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These versions didnt have any thorium inside them. Its a 345-2 model (with red dot instead of red diamond) made between 1962 and 1963. The thorium glasses were added since 1965 in the midproduction of 345-5.model (with the red diamond and more scalloped focusing ring)

    Does the lens use JIS screws?

    • @ravajaxe
      @ravajaxe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a quite old lens, it is assembled only with ordinary slotted screws and slotted grub screws. I think that the transition to JIS screws was done when the the K mount appeared.

    • @qmechkeys
      @qmechkeys 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the newest one made in 1975, the year K mount was released.
