    I was a Chemistry & Radiological Controls officer in the USN in my youth. Thoriated glass was not allowed in eyepieces for microscopes, binoculors, etc...becasue of proximity to the cornea of the eye. This is one place where low kinetic highly ionizing ALPHA particles can cause damage from outside of the body. Of course, ingestion of ALPHA is deadly in sufficient quantities. It is highly unlikely that either is a problem if one uses the lens as it is intended. Ingestion of soluble thorium from glass is not realistic. Neither is walking around with the rear element next to your eyeball for days on end. As long as the lens is attached to the camera body or protected with an end cap, this should be no issue in terms of dangerous levels of exposure. Alpha's are stopped by the dead layer of skin on a body's surface. Gamma is also emitted from one of the decay chain daughters of Th-232, specifically Thallium 208. However, it is a relatively low energy gamma. Also, some Beta, but again...beta is shielded by the camera body, other lens glass that is not thoriated, etc. Beta can be stopped by a sheet of alu foil. Lastly, you will get very high reads right next to the surface of the rear element. However, read from a foot distance and the counts will drop significantly. This is because the Alphas will not travel very far away from the rear element before being attentuated by the air space. I own two Super Taks (50/1.4, 55/1.8), which are great lenses IMO.

    It is the rear, thoriated elements that yellow as the ionizing radiation from decay causes stresses in the glass matrix that result in certain light wavelengths to be absorbed...hence the yellowing. This can also slow down the lens by at least one stop if not corrected. To remove the yellowing, intense exposure to UV light will, over a few days, relax the stresses in the glass matrix. This will lighten the lens up significantly. Do this every 12 months and you should be fine.
    Thoriated glass has improved refractive properties that allowed the lens design to be more compact and the elements smaller. This reduced costs without impacting performance.

    Use the adaptor that sits inside the bayonet ring and is going to give you proper registration for infinity focus. The Takumars are really charismatic lenses that help you make wonderful pictures. They have that plasticity of image that make for a really 3D look.

      What type of adaptor is that?

  • @ozzyj94
    @ozzyj94 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm an industrial radiographer by trade and we use a few different types of highly ionizing gamma radio-isotopes to make exposures to film such as Iridium, Cobalt, and Cesium to name a few. To stay legal and work safely we use PPE and safeguards to limit the amount of radiation we receive as well as other workers around us and the general public. A few of these items of PPE are a dosimeter, a film badge, a rate alarm and a survey meter. I also own one of these lenses so I'm going to do a little experiment and see if my dosimetry registers anything from the lens. I highly doubt it will although the dosimetry we use is highly sensitive to any ionizing radiation, so if there is anything to receive, it will. Just in case you are wondering, the dosimeters we are required to use here in the states typically calculate the dose of Radiation in mr/hr or milliroentgen an hour. To get an idea, the general public is allowed a dose rate of 2 mr/hr. You also have to keep in mind that every radio-isotope has its own decay rate and half-life, some greater than others, meaning the amount of radiation they give off reduces over time. I'll post back in a few hours to give an update on how much radiation my dosimeter receives, if any.

    • @theCameraVille

      Sounds excellent.
      I left this lens on top of my sd card for 2 years. The data is still on it but as to human contact... I cant say...

    • @ozzyj94
      @ozzyj94 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @the CameraVille Well, I've come to the conclusion that the lens is still fairly radioactive, enough for my dosimeter to register 0.2 mr in 1 hour. 1/10th of NIOSH and OSHA guidelines for the general public at 2mr/hr (which is still very conservative for safety anyway). And that was with the very back of the lens sitting right on top of the dosimeter. With shielding of the camera body and further distance of your face I'd say these lenses don't propose any real hazard. Still, very interesting to say the least!

    Thanks for posting. Its an awesome lens - I have one and really like it. In fact I like it the same amount as the Super Takumar 50 f1.4 (which has better bokeh than the FA50 IMO).
    Personally I'm not worried about the very small amount radioactivity these things put out (my Geiger counter barely registers). That is as long as you don't keep it in your pocket with the rear element against your body all day every day.

    Among my seven examples of the Super-Takumar 55 / 1.8 , only two contain thorium. Examples of this lens prior to approximately 1.5 million do not contain thorium.
    I should also point out that as far as I can tell, that sensor you show doesn't detect alpha and beta radiation, so I have no idea what it was detecting.

    How is it possible to use the Takumar at infinity, using a non-infinity adapter? Why show in the video an adapter that doesn't allow to use the lens to its full potential?
    K bayonet and M42 have the same register, if you add 1mm you loose infinity! The adapter shown in the video is that thick, more or less, but there are different kinds, even just half millimeter thick... but all of them don't allow to focus to infinity, unless the lens is out of whack. To get proper infinity on ANY camera with PK mount, the only option is the little ring that allows the lens to sit flush with the camera flange. The original Pentax one is the best. Cheap chinese copies are often problematic
