Gregg was only 21 and I believe Duane was only 22 when this song was recorded. The musical maturity was amazing. Gregg's vocals sound like they come from a life of trouble and woe. You'd never think he was still such a young man at that time.
You got to remember their father was murdered when they were very young and they were had a 1 parent Home. Hard for the 1950s Plus they have been in and out of military schools (I live right down the road from Castle Heights Military academy here in Lebanon Tennessee).
Totally agree. There's nothing wrong with live versions. I own the Pulse concert on DVD, but if I want to listen to Sorrow I'll put on the CD with the studio version.
I am probably in the minority on this but I prefer the studio version of this awesome song over any live version including Fillmore East. While watching Duane and Dickey live is unbelievable, Gregg's vocal being much stronger and clearer on the studio version is the difference for me.
Great rock band from the 70's that mixed blues, jazz & country music in their sound. They had lots of great songs such as "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", "Statesboro Blues", "Blue Sky", "Ramblin' Man" etc. One of my favorites is their instrumental "Jessica" which was written by guitarist Dickey Betts & named after his daughter.
In 1977, I named my daughter after Jessica as well. The Allman’s have been my touchstone since 1973. It probably helps that they lived and recorded here in Macon, GA so I saw them a lot, along with every other southern rock band. What a time to be alive! 🤟🏼
Teens in mid 70's/early 80's loved Southern Rock. Had Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, ZZ top, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, and on. One Way Out is a favorite by the Allman Bros.
"I hate the term 'Southern rock.' I think calling us that pigeonholed us and forced people to expect certain types of music from us that I don't think are fair... I'd rather just be known as a progressive rock band from the South." - Dickie Betts
This song is at the top of the southern rock genre and rock in general. Good on you guys for doing the studio version first, it's way more dynamic than the live version, particularly the vocals. This song never fails to impress reactors who have never heard the song or of the Allman Bros. well done you two
Thje Allman Brothers, especially Gregg, would disagree with you about the "Southern Rock" monicker. They were offended by the term. In Gregg's own words, rock originated in the south, so to call a band Southern Rock is "like calling it Rock Rock." They were an amazing blues-rock band that included bits of jazz and country infused into it.
Studio version is just fine.❤ I mean, that’s what I’ve always heard on the radio most of my life, but I did have the privilege of seeing them 12 times.❤
ONE WAY OUT! Have to do the live version. Only about 5 minutes. Absolutely one the best live performances ever. The guitar back and forth between Dickey and Duane is incredible
It's great to hear the studio version again, like many, I've mostly listened to one live clip or another in recent years. Brilliant band, song and performance. 😊❤
Yes!!! This is Epic and yes guys I wish you do the Live version from Live at the Filmore East 1970... Please saw the ABB in Tinley Park 1995 Got to meet the band Except Dickie Betts(he wouldn't come down). Gregg Signed pictures for my daughters Jessica and Melissa and my son Nick lol.... There is 2 songs you can check out from them...Jessica and Melissa but please Live at the Filmore East.. Thanks Guys ❤
Listen to, One Way Out, if you wanna hear how Gregg got over his pain of this loss. 😁😁 I'd suggest the studio first only bc in that legendary concert at the Filmore, his vocals are no where near as clear and loud as the studio. Seemed his mic was turned down. But still an amazing experience that you must take at some point.
I'd just like to reiterate, that i think you're very wise to always let your first listen be to the studio versions. As you said.. then you begin by knowing the song, as intended. 👍 👍
Revival, Hootchie Cootchie Man, Blackhearted Woman, Melissa, One Way Out, Ramblin Man, Jessica, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, the entire Live At Flimore East album. You guys got a long road ahead of you.
One Way Out should be your next reaction from this legendary southern rock band!! It’s live, but I don’t think a studio version exists. Straight up awesome musicianship from each band member!!!
Gregg was married to Cher from 75 till 79 and they have a son together, Elijah Blue, who is in her video If I Could Turn Back Time. He is the kid she hip bumps with. ❤❤❤ great reaction
Little did I know when my brother, 8 years older, played this in 1972 when I was nine, it would help shape the music I like to this day. My first Allman Brothers album is Eat A Peach. An instrumental of theirs that is one of my favorites is Les Brers In A Minor, just a really good guitar instrumental.
Little history. Bill Graham was the number one rock promoter during the 60s and early 70s. He was known for owning the Fillmore East and the Fillmore West plus a couple other ballrooms. He played everybody, soul Rock jazz Motown and sometimes he would mix it up in the same night. So he heard everybody and he said the Allman Brothers were his favorite band and had them close to Fillmore East on the last night. The live album is considered a masterpiece and in the national archives. On that album you will find a 22 minute version of this song, Whipping Post. Now that you've listened to the studio version you should seriously listen to the live version from "at Fillmore East".
Great reaction, Sam and Phil! I've always enjoyed their sound. The two songs you've mentioned are reaction worthy, but I've always liked their songs "Melissa" and "Jessica".
Anything from Live at the Filmore East! These guys were in their early twenties! Incredible!! Stormy Monday! No Way Out!!!❤️RIP Duane, Greg, Dicky and Butch!!❤❤❤❤
I'd say you did the right thing listening to the studio version of this first because Gregg's vocal gets a little lost in the chorus on the live version, particularly where he sings, "Sometimes I feel Like I've been tied to the whipping post, tied to the whipping post..." which of course, is obviously the most important part of the lyrics to hear in this song.
Im turning 71 in a few days and way back in the 60s I got my first job and saved up for a quadraphonic system and one of the few quad album's that came out then was the Allman Brothers Eat A Peach album! I also saw them live twice! In the 50÷ years of music I grew up with, The Allman Brothers Band was one of my all time favorites! I believe Quadraphonic sound was the precursor to surround sound now! Check it out! Your two are great! I stop on your site when I'm going to check out the comments of the music I grew up with and it's the music my Mom and Dad used to say to me " How can you listen to that crap!" 😀✌️
ONE OF THEIR SONGS YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO IS "ITS NOT MY CROSS TO BEAR" I met them when I was 14. I'm 69 now and was friends with Greg Alllman til the day he passed. He sang with my band one night after we finished a TV show. He did one episode, and it was when the new season premiered. My band played after the show aired and he came strolling into the ballroom and pulled me off stage, gave me a hug and asked if he could sit in for a few songs. This was one that our band knew, so it's special to me. But for a fun song, listen to Turn your lights down low and Statesboro Blues. You will love all of them. Thanks, Kathy ❤
Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on twin lead guitars. You guys are just scratching the surface of this band. I was fortunate to see this band more times than I can count. By far live is where this band really showed its chops. I’ve seen many of the greats, none were close to this band live. Have a listen to “At the Fillmore East” to get a sense of what this band was.
Oh, you definitely want to listen to the whole Fillmore East live album. One Way out, Trouble No more, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Les Brers in A Minor, Statesboro Blues, Blue Sky, Jessica, Melissa, Southbound, Dreams, Ain't My Cross to Bear, Ramblin' Man... basically, any ABB song.
Greg Allman plays Hammond B3 organ and sings lead vocals. Dwayne Allman and Dickey Betts on guitars, Barry Oakley bass, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanni Johanson on drums.
If you really want to hear their musicianship, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from the Live at the Filmore East album is a must. It is about an 11 minute instrumental that is pretty awesome. Check it out sometime. You will not be disappointed.
Everyone loves live Allman Brothers stuff. Live at Fillmore East is tremendous. But this album is so well recorded it really captures their live vibe. Excellent dual guitar parts with Duane Allman and Dicky Betts. My fave is the Instrumental Don't Want You No More melting into It's Not My Cross to Bear.
The Allman Brothers outlasted their audiences. At the Warehouse in New Orleans in the '70's they would start playing about 10:00pm and keep playing 'til 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. They loved New Orleans., played there a bunch of times.
Next up, you gotta play In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, on the Fillmore East Live 1971 album. It doesn’t get much better. The Allman Brothers were next level. Two superb guitarists, two drummers, great bass plater, and a great singer-organ player.
You all made the right choice going with the studio version. Live version is good but I like the studio version better and this is the perfect version to start with
I saw their very first tour when I was 14 in Sarasota at the City Municipal Auditorium on the Bay. I was a seasoned concert rat. Had never heard of them. As soon as the opened up with the "Donr want you no more" "Not my cross to bear" I went off. I was standing the entire concert. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" really really grabbed me, I was thinking, G.D., they're si F'ing good they don't even have to sing. But when they hit Midnight Rider I was in a state of disbelief and then wrnt out of body when Barry sang his tune the Hoochie Coochie Man, I found my band.
Whipping Post is the closer from their 1969 debut album. Try the opener … Don’t Want You No More / It’s Not My Cross To Bear (meant to be heard together). A STRONG introduction to a world that had never heard ANY Allman Brothers up to that point.
One of a handful of songs in my lifetime that after hearing it for the first time, I thought that's taking it to another level - 1976 I put When the Levee Breaks - Zep in that categroy.... My vote for next AB selection is One Way Out and then Melissa. As many note, many argue AB @ Fillmore East, the best live album ever recorded.
The only version of this to listen to is the LIVE version. One of the classic performances of the 20th Century. "Live at the Fillmore East" considered one of the greatest live albums of all time. I'm surprised you didn't review it over this album recording.
Gregg was only 21 and I believe Duane was only 22 when this song was recorded. The musical maturity was amazing. Gregg's vocals sound like they come from a life of trouble and woe. You'd never think he was still such a young man at that time.

Not only 2 guitar players, but also 2 drummers in the band!
Your policy of hearing the studio version first should be a law in all 50 states. :)
My only one-off would be In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.
Totally agree. There's nothing wrong with live versions. I own the Pulse concert on DVD, but if I want to listen to Sorrow I'll put on the CD with the studio version.
Amen.
That's silly. This whole lp is virtuoso ad lib jams. You are silly. Cannot be reproduced in the studio.
@billkant849 Re: Floyd...You never saw them live, obviously.
Such a purist lol
The definitive Southern Blues Rock from my youth. ❤
Having Duane Allman and Dickey Betts in the same band, both as incredibly gifted twin lead guitarists, just wasn't overly fair to bands of the day.
I am probably in the minority on this but I prefer the studio version of this awesome song over any live version including Fillmore East. While watching Duane and Dickey live is unbelievable, Gregg's vocal being much stronger and clearer on the studio version is the difference for me.
Absolutely agree!
I do too, the mix is sublime.
Totally. The difference of listening to the perfect recording of a perfect song and a (albeit cool) jam of the perfect song.
Truth on the vocals.
Live versions are fun, but the clarity and mixing of studio music is so nice.
This is the perfect version to start with, and an Amazing Allman Brothers song.
Live at Fillmore East is an absolute gem.
Stormy Monday and Statesboro Blues from live at the filmore east. The absolutely best album they ever recorded 😮
Great rock band from the 70's that mixed blues, jazz & country music in their sound. Yes❣️
Nice list!
@@CalvinCaylor 38 Special? I loved them too!
You definitely need to watch the 1970 live at Filmore East version.
absolutely
Allmans were the template of Southern Rock. Every band after them were indebted to them.
"I hate the term 'Southern rock.' I think calling us that pigeonholed us and forced people to expect certain types of music from us that I don't think are fair... I'd rather just be known as a progressive rock band from the South." - Dickie Betts
There's such a regal quality to their classic era catalog. Simply superb musicians across the board.
Two guitars + organ harmonizing together. Excellent.
Plus Greg's soulful vocals.
Jessica, a fantastic song
Worth listening to
RIP GREG ALLMAN. This is my favorite by them. ❤
This song is at the top of the southern rock genre and rock in general. Good on you guys for doing the studio version first, it's way more dynamic than the live version, particularly the vocals. There is a live video which is also exceptional. Iconic band.
They were way ahead of their time. So much so that most people didn’t really understand their music and sound through the first couple of albums.
Blue Sky, Melissa, Ain't Wastin Time are three of this amazing bands best songs.
one way out
R.I.P., Dwayne Allman.
and Greg and Dickie Betts
definitive
And Berry Oakley
and Butch Trucks
“One Way Out” was another top play all during college and on FM radio!
Thank you for starting with the studio version! 👍 Nine times out of ten that's the best call.
Studio version is just fine.❤ I mean, that’s what I’ve always heard on the radio most of my life, but I did have the privilege of seeing them 12 times.❤
Gregg never got the credit he deserved for that amazing voice of his.
Agree
One Way Out live at Filmore East is their best live performance because all of their instrumentals and Greg's vocal are heavily featured.
Now that's what a professional band is supposed to sound like.
One of the best bands ever, especially live
THEY WERE ON A WHOLE DIFFERENT PLANE,the ALLMAN BROS made the 70's
The One, The Only, The Best. RIP, Boys. 🤟🏼
ONE WAY OUT! Have to do the live version. Only about 5 minutes. Absolutely one the best live performances ever. The guitar back and forth between Dickey and Duane is incredible
Rambling man, Melissa to many great songs to hear.
Wait till you play the live version, knock you sox off, great reaction
It's great to hear the studio version again, like many, I've mostly listened to one live clip or another in recent years. Brilliant band, song and performance. 😊❤
"Loan Me A Dime" !!!
Duane and Boz Skaggs 1969. Unfreakingbelievable.
You guys would LOVE this. I know you would.
Yes!!! This is Epic and yes guys I wish you do the Live version from Live at the Filmore East 1970... Great reaction! You should listen to the audio track of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed from Live At Fillmore East 1971.
Now picture in your head seeing them live singing this song it was awesome
I'd just like to reiterate, that i think you're very wise to always let your first listen be to the studio versions. As you said.. then you begin by knowing the song, as intended. 👍 👍

Allman Bros rock! Great reaction!
I miss their live shows more than you'll ever know.
One Way Out should be your next reaction from this legendary southern rock band!! It’s live, but I don’t think a studio version exists. Straight up awesome musicianship from each band member!!!
Statesboro Blues, Live at Fillmore East 1971… WOW!!!!!!!
Listen to The Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East "Whipping Post" it's live!
Blue Sky is a must listen
Gregg was married to Cher from 75 till 79 and they have a son together, Elijah Blue, who is in her video If I Could Turn Back Time. He is the kid she hip bumps with. ❤❤❤ great reaction
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
"In Memory of Elizbeth Reed", is one of my favorites of theirs. If you do decide to react to it, strap yourself in, it's one hell of a ride.
Little did I know when my brother, 8 years older, played this in 1972 when I was nine, it would help shape the music I like to this day. My first Allman Brothers album is Eat A Peach.

The Allman Bros Band is pure jazz rock fusion steeped in the blues. Try Elizabeth Reed.
Great reaction, Sam and Phil! I've always enjoyed their sound. The two songs you've mentioned are reaction worthy, but I've always liked their songs "Melissa" and "Jessica".
oh boy they just went there! love it! welcome to the party! you will enjoy it!
Anything from Live at the Filmore East! These guys were in their early twenties! Incredible!! Stormy Monday! No Way Out!!!❤️RIP Duane, Greg, Dicky and Butch!!❤❤❤❤
Kings of "Southern Rock"
you have to do the live version of the song one way out
True Rock Legends!! One of the two drummers, Jamoe, is the sole surviving original member of the band.
One way out...live at the Fillmore
Live at Fillmore East hooked me on the band all those years ago (1971). Great song.
I’m a Georgia boy and the Allman bros are a Georgia tradition. my song suggestion is “ One way out”
I'd say you did the right thing listening to the studio version of this first because Gregg's vocal gets a little lost in the chorus on the live version, particularly where he sings, "Sometimes I feel Like I've been tied to the whipping post, tied to the whipping post..." which of course, is obviously the most important part of the lyrics to hear in this song.

Live is a must! The last member recently passed away RIP Dickey Betts.
Jaimoe is still alive. He's the last original member
After this, Duane Allman played with Eric Clapton on Layla , Derek and the Dominoes.
It's great seeing you listening to Whipping Post, a great song I heard 1st 54 years ago. Classic!

I really love the drum work by Butch Trucks and Jaimoe on this one. Checkout Melissa.
Duane in left ear, Dickie in the right! Perfect! Not soul, this is deep down blues!
Greg Allman plays Hammond B3 organ and sings lead vocals. Dwayne Allman and Dickey Betts on guitars, Barry Oakley bass, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanni Johanson on drums.

Approach always do the studio first . Then the live version I think that is the best way to do it thank you guys for doing that
Next ones to try, in my opinion, is 'In memory of Elizabeth Reed' and, my personal favourite 'Dreams'.
Love The A.B.B.. Gregg has been called the best white blues singer ever...by black bluesmen.
My favorite from them. Awesome song.
only rock song I know with an 11/8 time signature
Only the intro/organ sections are in 11. The rest is in 6/8
Stormy Monday live audio from The Fillmore East 1971.

Midnight Rider
You can hear each stroke of the whip!
Those drummers set me into "Road-Trip Mode" every time! BTW...this is live sound.
"One Way Out"
Their Live From the Fillmore East album is a classic. There is not a bad cut on it.
Sweet Melissa is another good one .
The only version of this to listen to is the LIVE version. One of the classic performances of the 20th Century. "Live at the Fillmore East" considered one of the greatest live albums of all time. I'm surprised you didn't review it over this album recording.
ABB is at the top of the list for bands that I have saw the most in concert!
Great band and man back in the day we had great music! soon to be 67 yo guy.
