  • Skip Away raced into thoroughbred history yesterday when he won the 45th Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park against an all-star field. With the victory, his ninth straight, he drew ever closer to the stature and the money record of the great Cigar.
Skip Away, the durable gray 5-year-old purchased three years ago for $22,000 by the trainer Sonny Hine for his wife, Carolyn, won by a length and three-quarters over Gentlemen, the 6-year-old iron horse from Argentina, with Running Stag third, Free House fourth and Coronado's Quest fifth and last.
Coronado's Quest, the only 3-year-old in the field, saw his five-race winning streak end.
Jerry Bailey, who won his fourth Woodward Stakes and his third in the last four years, including two aboard Cigar, was asked to rank Skip Away and Cigar.
''It's like having two kids,'' he said. ''Which one do you love most?''
Sonny Hine, clamoring for respect for his horse for months, said: ''He is some horse, the best there is. He is one of the best I've ever seen. He is so brilliant.''
Carolyn Hine said, ''We want him to get the respect he deserves.''
Richard Mandella, the California trainer whose Dare and Go ended Cigar's winning streak at 16 two years ago, led the cheers for his Gentlemen but acknowledged Skip Away's achievement.
''At the top of the stretch, I thought we had a big chance to win this one,'' Mandella said. ''But Skip Away just got away from us. He showed everyone just how much of a tremendous horse he is.''
Shug McGaughey, the trainer of Coronado's Quest, said: ''Skip Away is getting close to making history. Everyone thought this would be a great race, but it didn't really shape up like everyone thought. Coronado's Quest and Free House did not run their races, and maybe Skip Away made them not run their races.''
For a quarter of a mile, Skip Away ran a length or so behind Coronado's Quest, who flew the first quarter-mile in 223/5 seconds. After half a mile, which was run in 452/5 seconds, Skip Away had the lead with Coronado's Quest second, Free House third and Gentlemen fourth.

Look at those early fractions while on the lead...Still pulled away from field in stretch...Skip Away was a GREAT Horse during his Prime...

Skippy was far the best older horse I have ever seen (90's on..). What a wonderful horse he was to watch run.

Skip Away was exciting to watch. His running form made him look more powerful than most of his competitors, like a sportscar in a field of minivans.

Prime vs Prime i would give Skip Away the edge over Cigar...Both were Great Horses but Skip Away had the better tactical Speed and His ability was right there with Cigar...Skip Away was a MONSTER during a good stretch of his career...Bounding home in the stretch with suck power in his Prime...He was a legit Champion...His Rival Formal Gold had his career cut Short before the Classic and He was a Horse that disappointed me most because He was turning into a SUPERSTAR in my opinion...What could have been...

Cigar got all the glory, but Skippy was 99% as good. Skippy is the most underrated horse ever. People think Justify was better...he was not even in Skip Away’s zip code.

    • @joechrow8341
      @joechrow8341 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Skip Away got better with Age...Justify was a Very good junior Division Horse...As far as at their Best "obviously" Skp Away was simply "Superior" to Justify but both Horses are hard to compare

I had only wished Formal Gold could've run against Skip Away as a Five year old. Formal Gold was constantly running Beyer Speed Figures in the mid 120's. No telling what he could've done as a five year old. He beat Skip Away 4 of 6 times that year. During the. Summer and Fall of 97 he was beating Skip Away easily

052497 Formal Gold was a BEAST, I can’t say enough good things about him. He owned Skip Away, but only won 8 of 16 races, while Skip Away won 18 of 38, including ten G1’s. Skippy has to be ranked well ahead of Formal Gold based on their whole careers. FG is still alive at 26, btw. I would like to visit him if he ever comes back from Canada.

@@razorback9926 Formal Gold was going to be the Classic favorite if he did not get injured...His last few starts were simply amazing...HUGE Beyers also...VERY disappointed he never got to run again

@@052497 Would have been extremely exciting to see what Formal Gold would have done in the Classic that Year...Seemed as if he turned into a complete Monster before the injury

Posting from 2024....and there hasn't been anything close to a 1998 Skip Away. The good old days when a champion was determined at the age of 5. When a thoroughbred hits their prime. And has been carrying the excess weight for several races. "Good horses win. Better horses win money. The great win grade 1's multiple times. Champions win multiple grade 1's with weight. The legends set records with big weight on their backs" Ben Jones. The Ability to carry weight, and win is a special quality. Horses like Citation and Secretariat never won with weight. And nobody has since the mighty Skip Away. Oh...and the field of this race. Not sure about Running Stag, but all the rest, are in the HOF. Free House beat Gentlemen and Touch Gold by a stunning 6 lengths in the vaunted Pacific Classic a month before. Yet even with Skip giving him 7 lbs, was no match.. late 90"s had great racing...but it's been a rapid slide into ....a dam good question?? Not good.

You forget about Formal Gold who was better than all of these. He was getting so good in 1997 it was a shame he got injured before the Breeders Cup in 1997.

Lol no! Formal never won at the classic distance. That’s why he has no awards as will never be in a hall of fame like Skip away 👍
