Tying a Micro Bugger (to chase some wild micro trout)

- While not the exact Micro Bugger from Bart Lombardo's "Panfish on the Fly," this pattern was definitely inspired by it. This has been a successful panfish pattern, but there's no reason it can't be an equally successful trout fly.
Hook: #12-16 3x long
Bead: Glass
Weight: Optional
Thread: Any color, or to match the body
Tail: Marabou
Hackle: Hen, palmered
Body: Marabou, spun as a rope

I really like the bugger. I've been tying them since I was younger and I think it's The best fly in the world. If you need materials for the bugger you can use about anything man-made or natural.they all work well for all fish. Well it's been about 8 months but there's 2 feet of new snow and it's time to fill my boxes back up😂 Glad do see he's still hard at work making videos. Fishing scenes at the end now is cool too.

I tied some of these up last night and I'm putting them on some local water today, I can't wait to see how well they work out. Either way, fun little pattern that's easy to tie.
Yes indeed! I tell you, this fly has done better for me than I would have ever expected. Any fly that has saved me from being skunked gets a permanent place in my box. :-)

Nice. Several folks suggested all white buggers. That’s been successful with a little pearl flash for me in winter. I don’t know if they work in the mountains where you are going, but little black or brown stoneflies worked well on rivers coming out of the mountain country in western MA in winter as well.
You know, I'm going to add a couple to see. I've got some small silver cone head beads so I might do that with a white body and a little flash. Thanks for the idea!

Nice, colorful, wild brown there. I've been on a nymph and dry fly kick for a while now, I should probably tie some streamers myself.

Morning Matt. This is a fun fly to have. I tied as handful up for the western Sierra's. My father-in-law caught a couple of Golden's with it in some deep pockets.

Great looking little streamer, nice fun small brown, should have felt great on the 2 weight. I have tied some little streamers with both white marabou and white mink, palmered like that, and had savage takes on largemouth bass. A great streamer pattern. Thanks for sharing Matt.
Great note Lee! I'm thinking of adding some of these with white marabou and a bit of crystal flash in them. And yes, that's why I fish this 2-weight sometimes. It makes these little 10-inch fish feel like monsters. :-)
That was some nice jumping from that Brown. A different fight on a light rod. Have you ever tried Tenkara? The river you're going to in the Blue Ridge might be perfect for that. Tenkara flies are simple but fun to learn the patterns.
You know Mel, I did pick up a Tenkara rod this summer but have only used it a couple of times. It pretty much takes up no space in my pack so I might just take it along with me on the Blue Ridge trip. Thanks for the prompt!
That "Thingamajig" worked well fooling that brownie.
Hahaha! It only fooled that one. I got skunked for the next three hours and only one more after lunch. :-)
I've been tying a somewhat similar fly but it uses gold wood duck under wing and olive bucktail over that. I've also been tying them in white (with natural wood duck), in size 12. I fished with my version of a micro streamer on a small stream about a week ago and landed a 16" brown on my new 2/3 weight rod (2nd day fishing it). I've one well with micro streamers for brook trout in the adirondacks as well
Nice fly Matt, was your glass bead a Miyuki silver lined 6/0 seed bead, I like the way they shine as a head or attractant on a fly, they fit several different hook sizes. Great looking stream, nice way to spend a afternoon at work!!!!
Good eye Phil! It was indeed a silver lined, translucent bead. I don't know if it was from Miyuki and I can't remember exactly where I got them but the package says "D's Flyes" of Denver, Colorado. Matt, I found them on several sights but also found them listed in J. Stockards, they are listed on their regular bead section of tying materials as Tyers Glass Beads, really economical price.
Great tie Matt. Tuesdays and Fridays are a highlight in my week. Looking forward to the next "Name The Streamer" contest. Any chance of you reviewing the book, "Strip Set" b y George Daniels. Brian Flechsig, of Mad River Outfitters, is really big on this book. You're my go-to guy for such things.

If it's a tying book I might add it to my list to review. But if it's a fishing book, I might just have to buy it for reading. :-)
Nice fly Matt. I tie all of my buggers with hen hackle which means using multiple feathers in a thread loop. I might start using prepared fine wire dubbing brushes because thread looping feathers is kind of annoying.
I hear you Daryl! I should try that... I do have some longer hen feathers but the fibers are usually too long for even a standard size bugger.
Great tie, great fly, great vid. I don't know if I would call a size 12 wooly bugger micro though. I've seen guys who fish still water tie them down to a 16 to mimic swimming nymphs.
Wow, that is one tiny streamer! I guess most of the "standard" streamers I tie are on size 6s so anything under a 10 I kind of consider a micro. But you're right. In some situations a size 10 might be huge. :-)

To be fair, I have a bit of a scewed perspective.
I live in middle Tennessee, so the only trout water is way up in the mountains and in tailwaters. Most of my fly fishing has been going after Lepomis species, smallmouth, and more recently common carp and grass pickerel (picture a microscopic muskie).
You have to impart more action in stillwater, so something like a damselfly nymph or a tiny leech may end up being slowly stripped more like a streamer.
As opposed to say...a crayfish pattern, which most people would call a streamer, but which produces way more fish in creeks for me if I drift it and tick the bottom with it like an overgrown nymph.
Some things just seem to defy classification. Buggers lend themselves well to just about any approach. They don't look like anything, they just look like everything.
Love the channel btw. I'm about to get ankle surgery so I'm sharpeneing my tieing skills in hopes of staying sane during recovery. The information you provide has been very helpful. 🙂

Where do you get your glass beads? Craft store or Fly shops??
Both actually. I've got a big tub of beads from Walmart, but these beads came from a fly shop. They were actually red with a silver inner lining. I can't remember exactly where I picked them up, but the package says "Tyers Beads, from D's Flyes, of Denver Colorado." And yes, "D's Flyes" was spelled that way!
What size do you look for in the craft store?
Are there any small streams in the blue ridge area with fairly easy access? I’m taking my dad up there next month and he can’t get around like he used to. Doesn’t have to be drive up and get out of the car easy but something not too strenuous that would take all day to get to. Thanks.
Clint, I'm sure there are. My source for good info down there is Jim Holland. (I'm from Maryland but he hosted me down there in December so I'm not familiar with too many waters in the GA Blue Ridge Mountains.) You can probably search for one of his comments in any of my videos and ask him if he has any recommendations. It might also depend on what area of Blue Ridge you're going to be in. They're a pretty long mountain range and stretch all the way from North Georgia through Tennessee to Southern Virginia then Northern Virginia.

I enjoy your educational videos, and have started tieing some flies. Was wondering about pet hair/ fur as substitutes for other wild animals. Can be obtained from pet grooming. My golden retriever had fine to coarse blonde to red gold fur, my chihuahua has beige wiry fur, etc. Could yorkie hair substitute for 🐿️ hair? Just a thought, no animals are harmed vs harvesting hides.
Absolutely! I've used some of my cat's hair, and even dryer lint. Get a coffee grinder and you can make some great blends. I've got a video on DIY dubbing that shows you how to make all kinds of different fur mixes.

Probably so! Beaver Creek isn't all that long. I can pretty much fish the whole fly fishing section in half a day.

I just saw it! Nice bug. Do you put something as a wingcase before the UV resin, or do you just put the resin directly on the herl? I like it though and it looks like a pretty quick tie. I'm looking for something else to fill out my Nymph box for Georgia. I may just add this one (except I used all my olive marabou on these micro streamers). I might have to do this thing in a gold or brown. Wait... don't answer here. I'm going to email you back in a minute...
