I remember listening to the Mothers rehearsing at the Garrick and the Fugs had a gig around the corner on MacDougal or Bleecker St. June 1967. What a wild and crazy time that was.

I loved the fugs. Ed Sanders is still singing mostly political stuff

This is so good. Such a progressive and disciplined artist. His love of complicated inventive structures was matched only by his love of chaos. He was so entertaining too.

The speak-singing thing that that critic called a Zappa innovation had been used in musicals for many years prior.

It was innovation to include the speak-singing into a pop/rock record in the mid 60s, this type of singing was not present in this type of music until Absolutely Free by The Mothers

Actually it's the Soft Sell Conclusion at the end of Call Any Vegatable that quotes Stravinsky's A Soldier's Tale. Not Status Back Baby. The instrumental part of Status Back Baby does quote Stravinsky at the end but it's a section of The Rite Of Spring, I believe.
